Servo Swap & BEC Install! - Traxxas TRX-4 Sport Full Upgrade Project Truck Part 2 | RC Driver

  • Our project continues, this time with parts that I think will improve anyone’s experience with the Traxxas TRX-4 line of trucks. The ready to runs come with a good servo to get you going, in fact it’s still a used servo in one of our TRX-4 daily driver trucks. But you will probably reach a point when you start to master your truck where you’ll want more steering power. That’s when you’ll want to grab a new servo for your rig. Traxxas has high-torque servo options in their line-up for those who want to plug in and play with genuine Traxxas parts. In this video we’ll show you some of the steps required to install their High-Torque 400 servo and a BEC to supply the power needed to get optimum servo performance. We’ll show you a servo horn/arm upgrade too!
    NOTE: I may have gone too basic on the BEC explanation. The BEC uses power directly from the battery to supply a higher voltage to the receiver. The ESC is supplying approximately 6.0V to the receiver which will power any modern servo you install. To get maximum performance, installing a BEC will bump the voltage up to approximately 7.4V to power high-voltage servos. Do not try to power a 6.0V servo with a higher voltage, the servo may burn out. Also I call the servo horn a servo arm in the video, the more appropriate name is “servo horn” I apologize for any confusion.

    IMO the most pragmatic and instantly noticeable improvement one can make to a TRX-4 (or TRX-6) is a steering servo upgrade. The next would be stainless steel skid plates for the pumpkins and center chassis if you regularly play in the rocks. Frequent rock crawling can grind clear through those pumpkins in about 100 hours. I know this from experience.

    Just wanted to point out you won't need an external BEC if the ESC you use has an adjustable internal BEC. Like the Castle Mamba X for example.

    • @ollep9142
      @ollep9142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not correct!
      a) The limiting factor of the ESC's BEC is the current maxing out at 1.0 A. A strong servo will use more than that every now and then.
      b) Even if you can hike up the voltage from the (one) BEC you don't want to, because that will fry the other components (receiver and smaller servos).

    Just a note about 7.4V - many mini servos cannot handle over 6V (even some standard servos). I have run Traxxas 2075s at 7.4V, to great effect, but 2065s might be a different matter.

    Wait Wait Wait... maybe I'm missing something here. If the Steering servo is the one who needs more power why are we feeding the speed controller instead?
    Or, does this BEC system feed the whole receiver through the speed controller lead, and everything connected to the receiver gets benefited (including the steering servo) from it?

    i don't think that bec is 7.4 volts if it was it would fry the diff and gear select servos, i believe its still 6.0 volts but has more current and amps then the stock bec,s 1 amp

    • @TheLastTater
      @TheLastTater 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Current and amps are the same thing. Lol but yes I think you’re right, I don’t think he BEC outputs 7.4v

    • @ollep9142
      @ollep9142 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it won't, since it's only feeding the steering servo. The other components take the 6.0 V from the ESC's internal BEC.

    If you replace the ESC with one that can output the 7.4v for the upgraded servo (thinking HobbyWing 1080) in a TRX4 (not sport) can you use the internal 7.4v BEC inside the ESC or will that fry the small dif and trans shifting servos making you still need a BEC for just the steering servo?

    • @rcdriver
      @rcdriver  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Traxxas ESC/BEC/Servo set-up shown in this video in a Bronco build I did that has the stock sub-micro servos and it works without issue. I can't say for certain it would work with the HW set-up, I haven't tried it. Sorry.

    • @tgjaedan
      @tgjaedan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rcdriver This shows my R/C noobishness...but does this Traxxas BEC setup send the 7.4v to just the steering servo or does it send it to all the servos? My assumption would be the 7.4v coming from the ESC itself would send it to all the electronics...I wasn't sure if the external BEC like this was used to only send the extra voltage to the steering servo and not the rest of the electronics.

    • @rcdriver
      @rcdriver  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Spiffy_McAwesome Correct, the BEC in theory should supply 7.4V to the entire board in the receiver so they would all be powered the same. I doubt there is a regulator for the auxiliary servo ports separate from the steering. My worry about recommending trying another system is that I’m not myself certain that the Traxxas BEC supplies 7.4V. I’ve never put a meter to it. When I inquired about the voltage output of the BEC, I was told it works with their electronics configuration. Perhaps someone out there has tried it or tested it, might be a good research project to see if it’s 7.4 or 7.2 or whatever just to be on the safe side.

    • @tgjaedan
      @tgjaedan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Daniel Herweyer That is good to know but also kind of sucks that they don't give you a BEC that will make full use of the servo. Does the BEC say 7.4v?

    But I don’t understand having to get an aftermarket part for a brand new car??? To me the product isn’t finished and please don’t tell me it’s a business model!!!! If Chinese companies can produce decent servo’s for a decent price than how come “Western” companies can’t?

    • @JIMJAMSC
      @JIMJAMSC ปีที่แล้ว

      Late but Ok... Its a business model haha.. "Aftermarket", modded, upgraded use to mean by the user or later on by a 3rd party who recognised a shortcoming. Now all these are created during the products development and are core to its pricepoint. I mean a 1/18 scale TRXm cost them $50 to produce but you can EASILY drop $600 on "upgrades."
