Karl thanks for shedding a lot of light on this. Medellin and Colombia are getting a bad rap from the media because that's what sells. Lots of dudes from the States and other foreign countries are doing the wrong thang there and in a very careless way. I love my Colombia as I'm a Colombian-American. I have lived there in the Medellin metro area and Oriente Antioqueno for 25 years of my life. The bottom line is NO DAR PAPAYA as Paisas say in Colombia. I have avoided all that crime stuff by just not flashing or flaunting expensive things in public.

You are the one living there so I respect your opinion, but as a solo female traveller and from all the friends I know who have travelled there, Colombia is far from what I would call ‘safe’. I was almost mugged in broad daylight in Santa Marta in the craziest situation, my friend was robbed in Medellin even though she was with a big group of local friends, people from a hostel I stayed at in Medellin were sexually assaulted and a guy at another hostel in Poblado was stabbed for not handing over his phone. Literally all that happened in the span of 1 month and those are the few stories I heard about. I’m sure there were many more. Sure the stories where people are actually getting murdered are usually to do with tinder and drugs but absolutely traumatising things are happening to regular tourists doing normal things. I have travelled to almost 50 countries and Colombia is in the top 3 where I felt the most unsafe. I hope things improve but I think people have to truly understand the risk they’re taking when they go there. I thought I did before going but was quickly proven wrong.

Hi Alina, I agree with you that once in Colombia, safety measures must be exercised, particularly in tourist towns as obvious tourist are targeted. As I mentioned 1 cell phone is 3-6 months wages, and every tourist has the latest iPhone or Android. It's the easy target. One thing that greatly skews my personal opinion on safety is being raised in Harlem, then Jamaica Queens in the Crack Era. So certain things I would consider common sense when in a pocket of poverty in a dense city others just don't think about. For example getting stabbed over a phone. In a city where cocaine is cheaper than cigarettes I'm giving up the phone. Infact I have a backup lessor phone that I usually have on me to give up. I call it tax. There's no way I'm risking my life for a phone especially when the theif is hopped up on coke. No way. Overall I'd recommend people to visit, not look like a mark, and probably stay out of the typical tourist traps. Colombia isn't Denmark ots more like NYC in the early 90s, a place people would tell you is fun but be careful where you go what you carry and be ready for some action. Sorry you had a negative experience, I don't wish that on anyone

I am in Medellin as I type this (been here for about 1 month from Panama). I really like this city so far. Your description of Tou Ger Xiong was NOT flattering, but it's the probably the most honest I've heard so far.
Nobody has said anything about Xiong's Spanish fluency. I really wonder about that. Simply speaking Spanish can help you a lot when dating. As a rule of thumb if you need a translator to talk to a girl she cannot possibly like you that much.
Too many men who come to Medellin are on "Demon Time" and they get themselves into trouble.

You had hit the nail ! Being colombian myself i can tell you that even colombians specially those that live abroad a life time like me can be screw pretty bad when going to colombia. I only go to colombia once every 100 years ! only because i own some real state there. So i decided to go years ago and take my greek husband to supposedly show him my country. ( big mistake) they clonned our credit card and used it up to the limit for the tune of $25,000 USD!!! dont bother going there there are many other countries that are more beautiful and safe. In colombian they will cheat you, over charged you for everything and take advantage of you at every turn. My country is an embarrassment. This is not the way to promote tourism and project a positive image of colombia. On the other hand i will be relocating permanently to Italy next year & live from my real state passive income in california.

I don't think he was a sex tourists. Yes, he met her on tinder, but he thought he was actually dating this girl. Theyd been talking for months. I would not just make a person a sex tourist, tho he may have been. Seems he thought he was in a relationship. All I can say is everyone needs to take precautions. It's actually not specifically Americans, its western men period. They robbed a photographer there on business doing a photoshoot recently. They drugged his food in the restaurant, and stole all his things. Again, it's not only Americans, it's men in general from all over the west. No tourists are safe there, no matter who they are. But, i can certainly agree to stay off those sites, move as low-key as possible, don't do things to bring attention to yourself. And knowing some of the language helps tremendously. Great video as usual.

If you go to a poorer Country for the purpose of sex because you struggle to find it in your own Country. You should rethink your choices in life.
