      Extra bamboo poles woven into the gaps & on the outside of walls would add extra wind break & insulation.

      It's all about what you are accustomed to and what you are willing to tolerate/accept as part of your life/lifestyle. Yes I live in the subtropical southeastern US city, and while it looks great, I doubt that it would work here. I'm not saying it couldn't work here, I'm saying no homeowner would want it to. Think of it this way, say you lived and owned a home worth $100,000 (and most likely more than twice that) Would you really want someone setting up a tent home that he built for $1000-3000 total? Don't think so, what would that do to the value of what you have?

    that's very creative. What would you do with the tent once you build your house? I think that that's what a lot of people should do. We could stand up against the big housing construction industry. And we could simplify Our Lives and not be roped into costly home repairs and luxury home goods that we probably don't need or use at all. I think you're doing the right thing by living that way.

    • @ih82r8
      @ih82r8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @joellouisfire
      @joellouisfire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      In a house you have room to run or hide. Also, psychologically, a burglar would probably feel more temptation to rob a tent than a house, since they look easier to break in.

      He's the property owner silly! That's why he's building his home on the land & living in the lotus bell and all that.. don't ya think the guy who interviews thousands of people about their tiny homes would at least know better than to camp on someone's land without their knowledge 🤔😆 also, he seems to have good morals. I suppose ya never know though 🤷‍♀️ either way, I hope you were jk.

      I've had two for 6 years or so. They are not up year round and one is fluted for a stove in winter. Aside from a few not so essential elastic straps pulling off they have stood the test of time. The most I've gone out though is tops 10 days. Far to heavy to carry any considerable distance unfortunately.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey Diva. The fire certainly helps a bit, but as the tents have zero insulation, it's still really only suitable for warmer climates or summer living (as is my case). However, it would be possible to find a way to insulate the tent to make it work for year round living. Perhaps in a similar way to how yurts are insulated.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Red Jack Obviously, as with all structures you need to build to your climate zone. I live in a sub-tropical region, where it doesn't snow. It's extremely rare for the temperature to drop even close to freezing. In saying that, this was constructed as a summer home, I don't intend to live here in the winter. As for storms, we occasionally get the tail end of cyclones, but its very rare to get extreme storm conditions. I've also chosen a location where the tent is well sheltered from the most aggressive winds and so far, I haven't had any problems with high winds.

    With all of the many NEW laws being enacted not only in the United States but also in Canada (and Canada is definitely worse) highly recommend you find out what's 'allowed' prior to building anything because unfortunately many people don't think about this and then end up not having any place to park your tiny house and live in it, unless you purchase your land. That being said there are laws in Canada (different in each Province) where even if you own your own land (and then why the need of a tiny house, since land is so damned expensive?)you cannot have just 'whatever you please' on that land either. Due to the explosion of the Tiny House Movement in the States, many Canadians got excited about the possibilities of building their own, only to learn that due to laws, they couldn't live in it, etc. I also understand the U.S. suddenly realized that more and more folks were looking at different alternatives and there are now laws enacted or in the process of, which are similar in structure to those in Canada. It's pathetic really, if one thinks about it, considering the growing populace that are homeless and the GREEDY banks and mortgage loan sharks who were the ones to complain to the governments of both countries mentioned to stunt people who wish to live in a smaller place, that they've built and to which is affordable.

    • @butterpecan5642
      @butterpecan5642 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ms40Watts the government does not want you to stop depending on them for everything. They dont want anyone to be self sufficient. Thats why they create laws to keep you in their grips

      Ms40Watts you are absolutely right some people find out about local rules after they sink a lot of money in a project. Governments and big companies will keep putting up as many roadblocks as they can think of. I want our country back from the tyrants. That's a little off base but your right.

      I live in the Northeast area of the United States. With the exception of Maine, most states surrounding mine have insanely strict building codes. It's sad, because we have some beautiful rural areas, and as I'm currently apartment hunting, it's SO frustrating to see the cheapest units (i.e., not in great areas or on 2nd or 3rd floors) starting at $1200 / month.
      I love Massachusetts. I was born and raised here. We even live in the more 'affirdable' part of the state...but the cost of living is stifling and makes it so hard to get ahead.
      It's literally either buy a house, rent an apartment, or live with family.....those are your options. I'd imagine many people just take the risk and live on friends or families land, but then if you get caught you lose your house! What kind of life is that?

    • @geekinutopia5899

      have you looked up lotus belle tents? They're considerably more costly. Like $2300 USD costly. Just for the tent.
      Granted, the idea was to escape the rent trap which would mean, depending on how long he stayed in the tent, and how much his weekly/monthly rent would have been, it would have easily paid itself off, rendering the earlier "costly project for a temporary home" comment irrelevant.
      (also, yeah I know, replying on months old comments but wtv. I'm always late to the party anyways)

      Its a high end $3600 tent..a few thousand for everything else. I am a travel nurse, currently in a "extended stay hotel" a tiny studio with a kitchenette- in Ohio paying $350 a week until my next assignment starts in DC where I will be paying $630 a week for a week for the same accomadations for the next 13 weeks.. 13 weeks times $630 a week equals $8190. Basically its the equivalent 2 or 3 months rent . I would love to have this tent in the woods of VA or MD half an hour from the DC beltway.

      +elizabeth “livefree” barrett Jesus that's a lot of money. I've lived in a motel & also paid $350 a week before so I know how that is. Since you know how long you're gonna be out there, is it possible to rent an apartment/studio that offers month to month leasing or rent a room from someone? My wallet hurts for you knowing that you're gonna pay almost what I pay for a month in one week! No one should be charged that much for 7 days.
