It's a bit like fast food restaurants. You go in and see a picture of a nice juicy burger then, when you get it to your table and unwrap it, you have something that looks like a bit like flattened hedgehog and nothing like the picture at all. It ought to be covered by the trade descriptions act.

To be fair you do tend to pay significantly more in farm shops, but you are generally getting a far superior product. Supermarkets screw their suppliers down to the last penny to maximise their own profits and this kind of thing is often the result.

Lidl is my usual haunt, being just down the road from me, so this is particularly useful. I'm of an age myself where I really miss those massive, full pies that Morrisons used to do, back when they had fresh food available rather than all packaged, and don't mind paying for what I like, so if the price were high, I'd still be there because I'm getting then what I actually want to eat. With these cheap pies, I always feel you can taste what's missing, if you get me. They dissatisfy, all the time, and merely being cheap is not an actual pleasure, I feel.

  • @dingnextstop

They`re trying to replace the ingredients and keep flavour with loads of fat(78.8 g fat in this pie/112% of your daily allowance). Another thing some supermarkets do is to replace fruit with sugar which keeps the price down and tricks our taste buds. The most appealing thing about this item is the box. lol

  • @wildthing6668813
    @wildthing6668813 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

They are reducing the percentages of the main ingredients and with some other ingredients they are using cheaper ingredients like palm oil. There will only be so far they can go with reducing the main ingredients like beef, chicken and pork before the pie isn't a pie. If the pie is 450g and they claim 18% then it's 81g of chicken per pie. One thing about any product is that they can put the letter E on the packaging meaning that there could be a lot less of the main ingredients in the pie or product. The pie could have as little as 3% chicken and bacon, just a few small pieces and more leeks than anything and they call it a chicken pie.
Always look for the letter E on any product this is what the producers do so they can put less of the product in the item and still call it by the main ingredients name i.e. a chicken, bacon and leek pie.

You said it yourself, prices increasing, contents reducing.
For anyone on a tight budget it would pr9bably do.
I bet a pie in a Morrisons of similar weight would cost £4 + and for that price I know I would get more content.
Horses for courses, buy cheaper and less quality or pay more for better quality.

Hiya Gareth, said before nothing beats a good pie. And this was nothing like a good pie😩😫 On a plate with heaps of chips or pile of buttered mashed potatoes. Some vegetables. Smashing. On its own, a blooming disgusting disgrace 🫢😵‍💫Value for money it ain't. When you start on your own post-mortem of pies, makes me think of Dr Quincy ME. Exposing the grim looking kack inside. You save us mate every time. Gawd bless you Sir. And thank you for your help in saving as cash. Allan&Family

Gareth you said it go to a good home produce farm shop for a comparison. You'll defiantly pay more but you will get a quality product. Actually if you google quality pies for sale you will find lots of producers with 5 star reviews, that also deliver.
It's not always best to buy cheap as chips products.

Since all the shortages, a lot of Lidl products have become no better that their rivals. Pies have gone up in price but the quality and amount of filling have become poor. Lidl stuff used to be crammed with content, sadly not anymore.

Their chicken, ham, and leek one is called "The Free Ranger" and steak and stilton is "The Moo & Blue". Theres others too, but I've only tried those 2. I don't find the Lidl Deluxe range as consistently good as Aldi specially selected. There are some good things, but Aldi are really working miracles with Specially Selected, it tastes as good as M&S.
Under £3 is cheap for a 'premium' pie, in this case I'd probably prefer to pay a little extra, eg a £1 for Tesco, Sainsbury's etc!

Nothing on the box said the 18% chicken had to be in discrete chicken pieces. a lot could be in the "sauce" being bits and scrapings of chicken left over in the factory after processing - little flakes that could not be sold any other way other than in soup and pie fillings.

The British people really are treated with contempt, with less ingredients and smaller sizes. Supermarkets are complicit in deceiving the British public while profiteering and inflating profit margins on the back of the cost of living crisis.

Best pies I ever had were from P’s Pies in my hometown but it shut down in the late 90s! I got offered work there when I was a nipper but I was already working but my mates did and the pies were top class no skimping on filling at all and the pastry was very buttery and it was always a good way to start a weekend before a few beers!
