  • Kaby Lake in Algoma Country is famous for it’s walleye fishery but it also has a good northern pike population as well. Rebekka Redd travels to northern Ontario to join the good people at Watsons Lodge to fly fish for northern pike.

    An #8 weight rod is fine for smaller Jack's and small to medium sized flies , but for bigger fish and large flies a #9 or #10 will make the fight easier , and cast larger flies easier . These fish may look hard as nails , bit they are in fact very delicate . A long drawn out battle in low oxygenated warm water , can kill them , even if at first they swim away fine .

    My go to rod for Pike would be a 9wt This way i can land them quickly and safely. plus i can cast a range of different size flies

      Totally agree, a nine weight would be the ideal rod for most pike fishing. thanks for feedback

    Awesome places!!! It seams that fly fishing is so uncomfortable and difficult.

    Personally, I'm alot more scared of getting shanked in the hand or leg by my own hooks when they still have energy left than of getting cut up a bit by their teeth ;)

    Hosting a fishing show and she is afraid to handle the fish. Wtf amateur hour lol

    A 'pro' guide not using a gill grip on a pike that size... :( that also removes the neccessity to use a teeth breaking mouth spreader. If you are afraid of the teeth, you shouldn't fish for pike.

      I was about to defend her a bit but then the video got to the jaw spreaders tip and I retracted. Jaw spreaders are bad, no way around that. Didn't she say she has fished pike a while now? Kinda disappointing she hasn't learned to properly handle them. The only saving grace is her overarching respect for fish and fishing. Nobody's perfect I guess.

      yeah, dont get me wrong, I still like the show but it just seems a bit amateurish like that.

    • @rsantos627
      @rsantos627 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      in fairness we did not see her use the jaw spreader in the video. Maybe there are situations where it is better? I've not had to use one but I've not had a pike chomp down like a pitbull either. Maybe that advice is based on her experience with such pike

      to be fair, she didnt take it out of the water, which is the best option

      I never saw that bit at first . You should never use a spreader or gag . They are barbaric instruments that should go straight in the trash .
