I come here to watch your videos every time I feel anxious. Watching you paint calms my nerves and your voice puts me to sleep. Thank you for existing. Please never stop uploading videos.
I love your tutorials!!! Necer learnt so much from any gouache painting videos!!! Thank you so much for sharing what you have learnt all this time. Keep up the good work!! ❤
I've just watched both your videos and I really loved them, I found them very peaceful to watch. The rainy landscape appealed to me, but this one is so full of warmth it really moved me, especially in those times of quarantine, and it had me reminiscing about previous trips to England as I watched you paint. Your paintings are gorgeous and you make it seem so easy, I'd really love to see more videos from you :)
I really loved this tutorial, I've been struggling with shadows and light this was a great representation of that! I'll try and take some of those tips and add that into my own paintings. Beautiful painting 😄
I've just watched both of your videos and i absolutely love them, beautiful paintings with lots of useful and encouraging tips for someone like me who wants to get into landscapes and gouache. this video encouraged me to finally order gouache supplies :) thank you so much !!!
I love your videos! I hope you make some more. Its really therapeutic watching your videos. And that one person who disliked your video dunno art at all haha.
Thank you for not placing obnoxiously loud, awful music in your videos. As well as explaining what you are doing and why. Your voice is very easy to listen to.
Lovely! You teach with such clarity! Thank you! I love the atmosphere of your painting, so looking forward to learning more about painting in gouache... Working in watercolours at moment!
I just found your channel and subscribe now. I look forward to learning more about gouache. I enjoyed watching you paint this scene. It's beautiful and peaceful. Thank you
Beautiful! finally i found a tutorial that i like both the motive and the explanation. please show more tutorials soon. I'm happy for that :) Greetings from Germany
Hey Ruth, finally got time to work on the free materials you’ve got here and in the website (thanks a bunch for that❣️), starting from this one. But with acrylics🤭. Hopefully it’d turn somewhat lookable😂
Ruth Wilshaw Well you’re right, I completed it (and tagged you on insta story, hope that’s alright). Really, thanks so much for the time and effort you put in publishing free to follow content and also for the encouragement❣️
i loved the tutorial, the painting is absolutely stunning! i tried following it today, and just as a feedback, i think it would help a lot if you showed your color pallete or specifically said witch paints you mixed to get this result, because i had some hard time with the colors hahah
This is a really lovely instruction video. I've always had a love-hate relationship with gouache. I'm a watercolorist and I can do something with mixed media, but gouache...oh my! I find it hard. I'm going to give this landscape a try, though. You make it look like something I could pull off. And I simply love the image you've created and the explanation you give. Thanks!
Mandy van Goeije ah thank you Mandy! Yes gouache can be frustrating with its quirky ways! But you could totally pull this off- I hope you give it a go! 💕
@@RuthWilshaw I did! Struggled greatly with finding the right consistency for the paint. It didn't help I used 4 brands alongside one another. And four ages of psint, for that matter... But...apart from the sun in the end, I managed tolerably well. For the sun I should have used a sturdier brush, I think.
Mandy van Goeije yes, finding the right consistency can help so much- I will do a video on this soon. Gouache is so versatile, but sometimes it’s knowing just how to use it to get the results you want! 💕
Well, to be honest, in the video it looks so stunning. I was inspired to try it. But I messed up, because I've tried to use just my 6 basic colors and in the middle of a process I was very surprised when you started to add color shades like, for example, yellow ochre. So I panicked a bit and tried to fast mix something similar to the shade. Unfortunately I ended up with some weird looking road with no light 💩. Maybe if you presented a color mixing to us too... It would be sooo helpful (and I would know there are some extra shadows needed) ❤️ But thank you for uploading, it looks amazing (at least your version 😂)
I just stumbled across your channel and your website - thank you for all the downloadable hints and tips stuff as well as these videos. I used to use gouache all the time at school but never 'learned' any proper techniques. Your guides look very useful and I'll definitely be trying some out. I love this painting - the subtle colours really bring out the best in the medium. Your shadows are beautifully done! PS what is your accent? At times you sounded a bit Irish ☘️ 🙂
@@RuthWilshaw I didn't know North Staffs had an accent different from Midlands - or at least you don't sound it. But I'm notoriously bad at identifying accents! 😂
Wonderful painting. Question about shadows. Would the fence post shadows be "splayed out" as you have them rather than parallel? It looks very nice your way but I'm wondering if it is also accurate.
Hi John! Thanks! Yes, the post shadows would appear somewhat splayed like this from this view point due to vanishing point perspective; what you’re seeing here is the same effect that allows parallel train tracks to appear to converge to a single point when looked at along their length. If you were to view the shadows from a different point, say from standing in the gateway, they would appear more parallel. I hope this helps!
Sorry, hit the wrong key ... the shadows look right ... even excellent. So I am agreeing with you and assuming that not everything in reality and art works out properly when using only engineering theories. Thanks again for your time.
Thank you! Just enough to allow the paint to spread around the page smoothly in a nice opaque layer; this is usually 2-4 drops of water for a pea size amount of paint depending on its consistency from the tube 💕
My painting was okay until i draw the sun haha but i really enjoyed drawing this! This is one of my first paintings i tried with gouache and its so much fun! Thank you for the tutorial! :)

Hi Ruth, I just found your tutorial and I want to know what kind of paper and tape do you use?
Read the description, it's all there.
Hi Robert! The paper in this video is a watercolor journal by Field Artist and the tape is Scotch magic tape- I get both of these from Amazon!
It was wonderfull. Would u please let me draw it?
Of course! Happy painting 😊
What kind of tape are you using?
Scotch magic tape! I stick it to my forearm first to reduce the sticky 💕
