Bought it for the PS2 back in the day and I knew from my first crash, which happened very fast, that this was it. Bought it for the PC a bit later and now I'm enjoying the rallysimfans mod. And Chirdonhead is one of the very best experiences in all of simracing.
The "too unfriendly to be fun" review was probably from gamespot iirc, and was from a guy who pretty much only reviewed arcades (on pc, on consoles I don't know, but at that time there were no sims on those, so it was understandable), but for us back then young simracers, it was not only loved, it was adored, the rally version of Grand Prix Legends or Nascar by Papyrus. The only negative thing, for me, was the random photographer that sometimes crossed the road and ruined a perfect run :D
Great review, thank you Emily! Richard Burns Rally - an educational game! I would say, give this game to an older child or a teenager so they will make out what driving a car is about and to know life and physics law on the road.
Drove this a lot and dr2; RBR is punishing stuff like grip in gravel is difficult; slides by the lack of grip remind me going fast in an old 4x4 in my youth in a dusty gravel road. DR2 the amount of grip is insane, cars are weightless, is fun for a couple of runs then it gets bored… rbr is adrenaline pumping just to try and finish an stage fast.
RBR reminds me of Assetto Corsa in the way that it would be nothing without mods. Most proper simulator games are like that though. I love playing RBR even more so than DiRT Rally 2 just because of sheer amount courses
Sims from that Decade were very "simmy!" They were designed for the hardcore gamers. Developers have fluffed up a lot of modern titles for the casual gamers to enjoy. Grand Prix 4, Grand Prix Legends, R-Factor, Nascar Racing 2003, Live for Speed and yes Richard Burns Rally. They are all shining examples of that decade. I still don't know a game that handles tire collisions the way Grand Prix 4 did.
RS RBR has info about how many times steering wheel turns in each car. When I set my wheel 1:1 like 900 to 900 degrees it is practically impossible to countersteer on a track quick enough.
Played this and Colin McRae Rally back in the era. RB was ruthless and fun but very hard with the steering wheels of the time (no FF, limited travel). CM was more fun for me, but I could see that RBR was superior.
Could y'all make an article or video about how to install RBR mods without using a client? I don't want a massive client that has to be torented. I just want to install individual stages and cars.
With torrent you download base game, and with client you download what you want on top of that. Also client repacks base files from torrent to install .hu version of RBR game wich is the best atm. Year ago you coult install all from client, but since traffick is huge they moved to torrent.
If you could tell me which version to download that loads straight away without having to move this file, and that file. I've tried three times, then just gave up. Thanks
Like art people only start to like things when there gone. The game was too hard back then or whatever, now everybody loves and shit on other rally games. I don't trust the simracing community, too much mimimi , is ok to have a opinion, but people are toxic.
I find it interesting that every real rally driver that I know that has tried RBR with all of the mods that are supposed to make it more realistic say that it doesn't handles well at all. Personally it feels like the cars handle like how rally cars look in videos but not actually how they drive. The rally drivers that I've talked to about this game like Jack from Dirtfish and others share the same feeling. There's a reason why real rally drivers prefer the handling of the Codemasters rally games, they actually try to simulate how the tire cuts through each layer of the loose surface. I also find it interesting how people praise RBR for having, in my opinion, the exact same physics as DR1 and 2s tarmac which is famous for being the worst part of those games.
People praise RBR with NGP physics, which offers by far the most realistic rally simulation out there and which is nothing like DR's physics if that's what you meant. Real rally drivers all play RBR/NGP. From amateur yet experienced rally drivers to Teemu Suninen and Kalle Rovanperä streaming the game and saying it's the most realistic hands down, to Nikolay Gryazin saying it's just like the real thing and streaming every other day and literally using it to train for real life. He made a stream just two hours ago in this platform, go and check it. Codemasters games are simcade. Grip levels are way too high and have sideways gimmicks to help the average Joe stay on the road easily. The cars have extremely simple dynamics with barely any understeer and oversteer most specially. There's a reason real-life drivers slide that much, and that's all due to the incredibly slipperiness of real-life terrains.

Blows my mind that people who love this game may even have not been born when it came out.
Also Gizmonda? Wow that's a blast from the past.
i wasnt born until 4 years after :DD
Best FFB and physics of any sim racing game, period.
The most realistic Rally Simulator for 20 years just because nobody had the balls to make something like that again.

correct! I moved from GPL to RBR and I am still here with RSF mod after so many years. RBR is the GOAT rally sim, maybe GOAT car sim
And the deer that jump onto the road!
RBR is the GOAT!

richie taught me what scandinavian flick is, it was most tricky move at school to complete on keyboard.
Feels weird that the game I’m obsessed with is older than me and I’m 16…
great driving!!! rbr is still the best in rally sim, no doubt

how many degrees of rotation you set your wheel to?

No ffb in 2004? Wheels had good ffb since the late 90s.
@@AndreaP76 Not for me unfortunately, I could afford one a few years later and it still works.
Great Game and video! Thanks a lot.
If you play RBR, WRC Gen and 10, Dirt 2.0 and EA WRC you are pretty much covered.
hey! I think Iracing can be today "too unfriendly to be fun" sometimes! ❤

Love RBR, genuinely hate the community. They say the same things over and over and ignore what I ask, no matter where I post it.
@@sagethevvitch No. Then your option is original vanilla version, but it has no NGP7 physics, what makes this game the best.
@@sagethevvitch torrent download is simply needed and 100% legal because it is an abandonware, no piracy involved here. No other solution

nice review, will make me reinstall this great sim

The best!

Dirt Rally roads are too wide, the EA Sports roads are too narrow, this is in the middle. I can see the appeal.

FYI the RSF plugin has a massive bunch of IRL rally drivers and all agree that it's far superior to any DR.
