I don't comment too often on TH-cam, however this song has become very important to me. This song has helped me grieve the recent loss of my son and the lyrics have touched me in a way no lyrics ever have before. I have struggled releasing my emotions but this song has me in tears every time I hear it. Thank you Ben.
I for some reason felt the need to reach out and just tell you how sorry I am to hear of your sons passing. I wish you an endless amount of strength through these dark times and I know how relieving it is, if that's the right word, to find something such as a song that helps put into words how you are feeling, and helps give you the power to move forward in a sense. My condolences to you an your family, again. God bless.
I just realized when he plays the guitar I can actually hear the unstill of the ocean and the constant rumbling of the waves and currents. How is it even possible to portray the ocean and create that feeling through music as if it were a painting?
Smoothest finger picking ever from Ben Howard (possibly from anyone) and by far the best version IFWWW. You can see the pain in his face, and hear it in his voice. He sings it slightly faster than the rest of his performances, like he is just trying to get through the song before he breaks. Not to mention the mike making his voice echo slightly to make it even more haunting. Best singer songwriter of this generation, and by the time he is done probably any generation! The most complete musician in decades (guitar, vocals, songwriting, emotional inspiration). He just makes you feel!
+Joseph Crowley Tallest Man on Earth beats him on fingerpicking. Though Ben has his own style that's out of this world. I suggest listening to Field of Birds by Tallest Man on Earth live on KEXP. Or Revelation Blues live on pitchfork.
+Joseph Crowley If we are speaking about complete artist I put Ben Howard and Birdy in the same level (even if it is not the same style of music) because she has a magnificent voice, can play piano and guitar, write her own songs (with a lot of meaning such as Ben) and put also a lot of emotion in her songs.
She is unique in her own style as Ben is in his own. I never include "Skinny love" as her song, at least not this song. For example I think that her cover of "The a team" is much better than Ed Sheeran... Her covers are very good, but I was talking about her songs (written by her) such as "Without a word" (she was 15 years old), "Words as weapons", "Not about angels" etc. Her second album is only songs written by her, as her third album that will be out in march.
watching someone fingerpick that smoothly always make me want to play, then i play and get frustrated and the kids have to stay with the grandparents for the night...
