    Great video. I'm doing much of the same, especially treating the NAS as the core of my data storage. I have a well spec'ed Dell XPS handingling Proxmox, Docker, VPN, VM's. I'm backing up the XPS to the Synology and the Synology to the XPS on sight, also using BackBlaze B2 for offsite NAS data storage. I also hung a 4 TB USB drive on the Syno for Hyperbackup of the NAS, just in case ;-)

    Hello, excellent channel, with your experience you recommend using tailscale to make backups in two different locations ?? THX

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! Tailscale is a great option that will simplify everything, but the big complaint by most is that it's a third-party solution. If that concerns you, you can self-host a VPN, but it's going to be a lot more complicated.

    Which Synology NAS do you have? You need to use data checksum integrity with data scrubbing and schedule it to run regularly to avoid your files getting corrupted. Unfortunately you said you are using SHR and this option is only available for raid 5, 6, and F1 in a Synology NAS. Have you tried Syncthing also? I feel it's the best app for syncing files securely locally and remotely. Anyway pretty nice set up you got there! 👍

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's available with SHR if you're using 3 drives. Funny enough, I created a video on that exact topic last week 😂

    Great video - always interesting to see how others use there Synology NAS's. I have a slight question on your backup strategy that I did not quite understand - you are using Active B4B to backup your windows machines to the NAS. Are you then backing up those Active Backup for Business backups using Hyperbackup? Or if not, is there a better way to get the backup of the windows machines into 3rd location or cloud storage without taking a backup of a backup?
    Good work with the channel pal - it's come a long way and been a big help and resource for me many times. Cheers

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you very much! That's a tough one. I do back up my machines off-site, but the truth is, if I needed the space, it would probably be one of the first things to get dropped from the off-site backup. I do think it's extremely important IF you're not using something like Synology Drive to sync your important data back and forth to the NAS. For me, it's kind of like a backup of a backup of a backup because the files get synced to the NAS, the backup is on the NAS, and both are backed up. With file deduplication, I'm sure some of it is saved in space but probably not enough.
      I think if you're not using Synology Drive, it's very important to have. If you're syncing your important data to the NAS already, it's not AS important, but probably a good thing to do if you can.

    Frank, great video! I'm a big fan. I'm also a synology owner, I'd love to hear about your overall storage (tb's) and how much is used (tb's). A more specific overall have & used space. I'm running a DS1621 with 2x4tb and 4x14tb, lots of video/media, big family so lots of phone photos and other archived digital photos. And I seem to run out of space. I have another 1621 with identical HDDs as a backup (nas to nas) but seems like my snapshots + HB clone seems to be HUGE.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! When I got this NAS, I never imagined that I'd come close to filling it up but I am over 40TB at this point. The bulk of the data is surveillance/Proxmox backups so it's not filled with movies, pictures, etc (and I could easily clear up space), but I think for the next NAS, I am going to oversize even more. Hoping to get an 8-bay NAS and go with 16-18TB drives (depending on cost).
      The snapshots shouldn't take up THAT much space, UNLESS you're constantly cycling data in/out of folders. If you are, I'd probably separate that folder into it's own Shared Folder with a lower retention time and then create two backups remotely - one for the data that's constantly changing with a shorter retention, and one for the data that rarely changes with a longer retention. That should hopefully keep the size down while maintaining most of the integrity. If you're using ABB or a full-NAS backup with Hyper Backup, you can ignore all of that because it won't be an option.

    I enjoyed the video.
    One question: I noticed you have one volume for everything. I’ve often wondered when to pick more than one volume and the same for storage pools.
    I suppose having more than one storage pool is only needed if you have a need for different RAID types but not sure if there’s a reason to have multiple volumes.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! For me, the only real reasons to create a second storage pool/volume is if:
      1. You're using SSDs for a small amount of data that needs the performance.
      2. You have an expansion unit and want to create a second storage pool/volume.
      For most people, I've never really understood the need for creating two pools/volumes on one set of hardware outside of edge cases where they are using drastically different sized hard-drives, etc. Even then, it probably makes sense to just move the data and change the RAID type (possibly, depending on the scenario). I'm sure there are legitimate reasons out there, I just can't really think of any off the top of my head.

    Hi Frank , do you plan to use Raid6 or SHR2 on your next 6-8 bays ? Do you plan to migrate your current NAS or your 5 bays will be use as local backup ? Buying new HDD is a big investment too. What’s your experience on migrating versus starting from scratch when you need more space with a new unit.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am going to use RAID 6. When I set up this NAS, I went with SHR thinking that I'd use mixed-sized drives possibly and my OCD won't allow it, so I am just going to stick with the generic RAID 6 for the next one. As for your question on migration, I think at this point I will start over. I'd like to change around my folder structures a little and even though I can do that now, I'd prefer just starting fresh on a new NAS and getting the data over then. That way, I can kind of stage the new one too before "officially" switching over to the new NAS.
      I haven't ever actually migrated NAS data to a new NAS outside of just testing. The testing works great, but it's normally with a very small amount of data. With 40TB+, I might be sweating a little bit haha!

    This is a great video - here's a video idea for you to consider (as I'm sure many of us are in this position, and you already cracked it).
    Synology NAS miniPC with Prox + Jelly + Transcoding
    How did you set this up (from a hardware + software configuration perspective to have it reliable, performant and secure)?
    It's not straight forward at all for someone to know what the LXC/ VM settings to pick + how to configure the Jelly inside for e.g. N100 mini PCs which are getting super popular.

    I have a DS-918+ that runs all of my synology based services and docker containers. Just added a DS-1522+ that is used exclusively as a backup nas. The 1522+ handles time machine backups from local macs. It also handles ABB backups from local macs and PCs. Additionally, the 1522+ backs up the DS-918+ using ABB. I also use Hyper Backup to send important files to Backblaze B2. Is there a reason why you are not using ABB for your DSM backups? I've just recently added the 1522+ but so far, all appears to be working fine.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've tested ABB for DSM backups and it's great, but you need to have just as much storage space on the destination NAS as you're using on the source (can't select what you want to back up, it's everything or nothing). In the future, I'd love a full, nightly ABB backup to an off-site Synology, but since I'm using a TerraMaster for that right now, it's not an option.

    Thanks, as always , for the fantastic video. I see you use Synology drive to sync your DOCUMENTS folder to a Synology share. Does this work on macOS Sonoma with ICloud Desktop & Documents enabled. For my primary data it’s all ICloud Desktop and documents to a 2tb iCloud account for that and Photos too. But I have always been fearful or implementing two sync services (iCloud & drive at same time ). Is that safe? Are there kinks and conditions? Does apples new “Apple File Provider” cause problems. I know tag has wrecked havoc on Dropbox and One drive (which can no finger get backed up by Tie Machine and/or Backblaze . Do you have any words and wisdom on these kinds of sync services conflicts. PS. I am also DESPERATELY waiting for the DS1824+ that is 6 months late. Thanks for words of wisdom.

      Thank you! To be honest, I don't know because I don't use that, but I would guess (and it's just a guess) that it won't work. I imagine there would be some sort of conflict between the two and the reliability would probably decrease, so if it's working and you're happy with it, I'd stick with it!

    I’d be really interested in a deeper explanation of why you use NFS instead of SMB for your backup volume connections. It sounded like it makes permissions easier? That sounds off to me, like I missed something or there’s extra nuance or something.
    Isn’t NFS ancient at this point? I know that SMB is still evolving, moving forward, and so seems like the more modern approach. What am I missing?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's easy to manage, the performance should be better than SMB for large files, and it's been very reliable. If I was doing it over, I'd probably use Proxmox Backup Server for backups, but if it was NFS vs SMB only, I'd personally stick with NFS.

    With the "new kids on the block" aggressively upping hardware in their upcoming NAS units, I hope Synology has plans to spec better/more expandable hardware in their next generation.

    • @salto1994
      @salto1994 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Quick question. I often see people talk about the hardware specs. But for the main purpose of a nas, isn't the hardware enough? Or is it because of plex/transcoding problems and etc. Wouldn't another IT System be more suited for non nas specific stuff?

    • @tommye.3754
      @tommye.3754 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@salto1994 My opinion is because of the switch to AMD cpus in the newer Synology models removed the HW Transcoding for media streaming, people want more/better specs. Plus I can understand wanting better than 1gb ethernet. BUT for most people and use cases, I'm not sure having better specs would really improve anything to the average user (with the exception of HW transcoding). I personally feel having a nas with an i7 CPU is just overkill. 😂 YMMV

    Just a question, why are you considering Raid 6 over SHR2 ?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I picked SHR, I did it for the flexibility. Thinking I'd potentially use mixed-sized drives, and my OCD won't let me, so moving forward, I'd use RAID 5 or RAID 6.

      Yeah, agreed completely. I'm a Synology user (DS413j, DS418 and now DS423+) and I want to learn as much as possible. Until now I used my 413j and 418 for backups and easy network access and sharing. I bought my 423+ just a few weeks ago because DSM7 is not available on my 413j and I fear for security issues, and I want more functionality of my Nas's (Nasses?). Watching this video, I have the feeling of being kicked from left to right, from front to back, from ceiling to cellar (lol) and I had to stop and rewind so many times I lost track of the topic. I'm not an native English speaker and (sorry to say) you speak fast and use a lot of technical terms which is inevitable, even the captions have problems to follow and sometimes they are gibberish. So please, slow down. LOL. I have seen earlier videos about the startup/setup of a new Synology, the configuration and I have learned heaps, it's always helpful to see how someone else organizes the NAS environment, the file management and so on. So thanks for the videos and watch out for speeding tickets. LOL
