The discussion of the environmental impact of sustainable logging for paper straws vs wheat farming for pasta straws would be far too intense for a show like Dragon’s Den, but I do know that tree farming uses far less water and far fewer pesticides. Land usage, water usage, and chemical contamination in runoff are massive issues in agriculture, and those problems are far less significant with well managed logging. 1. He should’ve used his “pasta la vista” line in the den (maybe he did and it was edited out). 2. People would just pay even an extra 10p without thought. 4. If you can convince high end cafes/restaurants that paper straws are an inferior product, they would’ve adopted this especially closer to the deadline, out of simplicity.
What if somebody buys a normal pasta pack (called ziti lungi / bucatini)? I'm pretty sure they're much cheaper than buying the product in this episode.
In my town here in the USA they banned plastic. All the restaurants have to sell paper ones and they suck. Somebody made a killing making stainless steel reusable ones. I think these pasta straws would be way better than paper disinigrating in your mouth

Definitely not a business. I’ve seen Pasta straws on restaurants for years now and they’re all locally sourced and made. Literally anyone could do this.
If he uses organic agriculture methods (zero fertilizer, zero chemicals) he could have made an argument for Sustainability. his idea does not require too much harvest produce if it is focused on only straws. Secondly he should reach out to the big fast food chains after he gets a patent.

I don't know why Debs attacked him. He was trying to compare the degradability to paper straws. Why was that a bad thing? He was trying to answer the question and to the ordinary person this is what they would focus on when buying the product.
Her point was that while at the face of it, yes pasta is less harmful to the environment like fish and what not, the amount of wheat and farm land needed to produce high yields of the stuff to make the pasta alone could be worse off to other sectors of environment than paper straws that take much less to produce. He didn't have that answer so in her book he was being naive.

Re Point 1) I get and fully accept that there are many people out there who do not use their own products, however, if my first thought (and from the sound of it @HummDrumm as well) when seeing him drink the water during his pitch for the straws was "Why is he not using one of his own straws?" then we are not going to be the only 2 people who thought that and Re Point 2) your Gin example is a (no pun intended) strawman argument at best as it would be seen as unprofessional to drink alcohol whilst giving a pitch and as such is a completely different scenario to which you could not compare this one.
He is clutching at straws.
sustainability rants by DM are just strawman arguments...

Good one.
my brother is actually running a profitable business based on biodegradable straws that he started this year and now has 4 employees. no idea how he can make that little money in 6 months
Does he have a site. Share the link! I might be interested in purchasing!
@@JennsCorner777 their thing is that they market themselves as a local (state wide) brand for now appealing to local restaurants and bars as the "hip drinking straw from our own city". not even sure if they ship internationally yet. they also customize the straws by engraving the bars name. McDonalds can do that themselves, small bars can't so i think this guy just has his priorities wrong
If he ever got customer they would abandon it very quickly. Sara bit the straw in the beginning, and I thought that definitely wouldn't be safe for children to drink with. They bite stuff all the time.
I don’t really know much else beyond that though.
Remember those chocolate straws, this is basically the same but pasta.
Chocolate fireguards sell well!
What I find interesting Mr. Gelmann took sips of water during his presentation without using his pasta straw. One would think you would try to promote your product with every opportunity.
I invented a 15mm copper pipe straw . It's great . When you've finished you can either weigh it in for recycling or keep it for repairs if you have a burst pipe at home in winter . .
Winner , winner chicken dinner .
What a missed opportunity! He should've drunk his water through one of his straws. That would've been gold.
Actually this business is doing very well at the moment ... turned over 700000 USD last year .
who else on lunch break lol :)
"I will have a tea and 100 straws. Look, I just made soup"
😅😅😅
1. He should’ve used his “pasta la vista” line in the den (maybe he did and it was edited out).
2. As Deborah said, he needed to check the supply chain for his product, even if that increased costs.
3. Retailers would have just passed on the cost to their consumer. People would just pay even an extra 10p without thought.
4. If you can convince high end cafes/restaurants that paper straws are an inferior product, they would’ve adopted this especially closer to the deadline, out of simplicity.
Jenny would have pastaway if this guy asked her for an investment
Hahahah 😁
Cheeky!🤣
My main concern is with transportation.. how many of these are going to survive shipping
😃
Good point
Pls can you upload a full version of the Bath-o-matic pitch? It’s the series with Kelly and Piers. That pitch is gold 😭
Flip the paper straw upside down iwhen the end you're sucking on gets soggy - drink from both ends.
Deborah is an environmental beast. Got him
Dragons don't know what they were talking about.
This business is now a major success after raising £180k.
Clients include the Marriott hotel chains, Ibis, Unilever
those pasta straws are just a type of pasta you can buy in the Polish supermarket. been buying it for years for next to nothing.
@dormie basne wow. I didn't realise this was a Stateside thing too. I was thinking SouthEast London. Very reassuring. Let's go into business and get in the Den haha
People who have a straw with their hot drink are going to have some pasta in there too😂
Never had a hot drink with a straw
who tf drinks a hot drink with a straw??
I love how they call Touker the wild card.
This is already a thing in Italy using pasta you can by for less than 50p in the shop
Bamboo growing in the garden makes the perfect straw. Only thing is I never use a straw but it's there just in case.
He's actually doing well and managed to raise good money😊
Really.. source?

Hey guys, I’m valuing my business at roughly 90x my revenue so far and I’m going to lose 250k in the first year. I don’t know much about my main selling point and everyone’s trying to jump into this market. Who’s ready to invest?
Great comment👍
Deborah is SAVAGE in this one!
Good on her! She makes excellent points.
This is the straw that broke the camels back!
Wonder what is costs to plant the wheat and the tractor.. Water pumps etc.. Is it cheaper???
I actually really like this idea.
Me too. I’d eat it after use lol
Could you start writing what year the episode was filmed/aired? Just nice to not have to estimate.
2019 they say it during the pitch
@@dadestor I did not specifically mean this video...
Tucan doesn't get out of bed for a straw . . .
Jesus Christ does Tej actually sleep looks like he lives in the back of his car
He has a great wig though
he lives of vitamins
Wondering why makeup of the show does not cover this.

Sarah saw her life flash before her very eyes 🤣
When Touker trys to look serious at 10:53 but just looks like a pug trying to hold in a fart
That's the straw that broke the camels back !
I do find it a good idea to make one time use products out of edible (= quickly degradable) material.
But I guess unit price is simply waay too high
Definitely not a business. I’ve seen Pasta straws on restaurants for years now and they’re all locally sourced and made. Literally anyone could do this.
Peter spoke my thoughts about this guy very clearly.
what happens when the pasta straw gets soggy tho and messes up your drink
Takes a lot for wheat pasta to get soggy. But you would think it would impact flavor
"solution for pollution" - love it, I hope Evan Davies writes his own scripts, genius 🤣
Pretty sure he stole it from Ted Turner. Just remember: "The Power is Yours!"
How about straws made of straw?
I think they regret it now, their website looks so professional and I bet they have been doing well.
If he uses organic agriculture methods (zero fertilizer, zero chemicals) he could have made an argument for Sustainability. his idea does not require too much harvest produce if it is focused on only straws. Secondly he should reach out to the big fast food chains after he gets a patent.
We bought straws that are cleaned in the dishwasher admitted they are plastic but we have not bought any straws for over three years they wash well too
This is a great idea. Where are they now?
I just use stainless steel straws.
At home. What about bars and restaurants- the amount of straws that will disappear….also to Deborah’s point you have a polluting steel industry making those. Back to square one.
You farter
Therefore, pasta straws are better than steel as it is better than steel.
@Paul Blackman 🤣🤣 NICE!.
@@Pgcito steel straws aren’t single use so even if they cause pollution because you get as many uses as you want, you only need to buy it once.
That was so rude of Deborah. "NO!" Like TF!? An excuse me, would have been fine. I have no idea why Sarah even said Sorry. I would have just been quite. She really didn't interrupt. Smh. Deborah was just rude.
Hello sweetie Davina how are you doing today ❤️❤️❤️ thanks for being my fan I appreciate...
The Lunchtime Show with Dragons
Well done Deborah for your environmental effort.
It's one thing to give someone advice on the way they should go but it's another to insult them and shoot their dreams down. These dragons must've been served their business opportunities on a silver platter! Smh.
I hope he doesn't give up
Peter nails it ....... "Stop this dream before you or someone else loses a lot of money."
LOVE it when the title of the video reveals the outcome (!). Instead of 'The Sixth Sense' they should have named the movie 'He Was A Ghost The Whole Time After He Got Shot!' and 'Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back' should be known as 'The Star Wars Movie Where We Learn Darth Vader Is Actually Luke's Father'.
Is this idea new though? I swear I have seen several similar products in some restaurants, either first hand or online... Or is it just a deja vu?
I don't know why Debs attacked him. He was trying to compare the degradability to paper straws. Why was that a bad thing? He was trying to answer the question and to the ordinary person this is what they would focus on when buying the product.
Her point was that while at the face of it, yes pasta is less harmful to the environment like fish and what not, the amount of wheat and farm land needed to produce high yields of the stuff to make the pasta alone could be worse off to other sectors of environment than paper straws that take much less to produce. He didn't have that answer so in her book he was being naive.
Are they not gonna bring up the gluten issue? Or eggs, if there are eggs in the pasta
Really interesting product. Seems like the dragons did not recognize the potential in this product, given the ban on plastic straws. Instead of chastising him for not having done a environmental impact study, use that to get his evaluation down and get the study done.
The problem wasn't the product, but the over evaluation and projected losses. Everything else was just throwing salt.
The next time my 96 year old Grandmother is in McDonalds ordering a strawberry 🍓 milkshake, which is often I must tell you.
She will ask for a pasta straw.
Hahahah, but I didn't tell her that they don't exist there, ahahah.
She thought it was a great idea by the way..
The paper straws i bought recently will last all day in smothies with no problem. The paper straws we had as kids before plastic straws where ok. Put pasta in a liquid and see what happens. If anything just make metal or wooden straws. Wash and use again like any other cuttlery
Raw pasta gets soggy in the mouth too, another disproved selling point
I'm surprised Touker got out of bed for this one
The polka dot lady doesn't need any more calories represented in the wheat straw
He ended up raising £182k via crowdfunding.
