And here's me just finding out about this now. Last Stand was the very first book I purchased when I got a Kindle. I was so enthralled, I started reading it again about a month after finishing it the first time. Read all his other works shortly after too. Just amazingly captivating, even to someone like me that didn't serve in the Navy.
Managed to citadel a Tirpitz from a frontal angle with my Warspite...asked on the NA forums how it was possible and it turns out that at a similar angle to where you can easily citadel a yamato, the Tirpitz and Bismarck have this tiny spot that's not covered by the turtleback that if I was intentionally aiming for, I'd never hit, but for RNG rolled the dice and 3 out of my 4 shells went into this exact location at near point blank range and blew them up.
The turtle back armour doesn't cover the bulkheads. It's not just a tiny spot, but the entire front and rear. Most non-american and especially German ships have poor bulkhead armour. If you get to angle where the bow isn't an autoricoshet but the bulkhead angle also doesn't get too steep you'll be able to citadel them even with some of the cruisers. But as you say, if rng says your shells must fan out in a v-shape and miss the target completely then... Just wait a bit, (Dave what do I do if I'm bottom tier with shit rng... NO!! I love when Clint told Clyde to ‘Junk It’ where Clyde would proceed to strip the Object in question as Clint Eastwood ran a Junkyard in the film. Excellent film, ‘Heartbreak Ridge’ still my Eastwood favorite.
When talking about the Bayern vs. Tirpitz, you should also remember that, in addition to all the things Jingles brought up, there's dispersion penalty that you get when you're in a T6 ship vs. a T8 ship (and a corresponding bonus going the other way). Also, the fire starting chance is similarly reduced when a T6 ship shoots at a T8 ship. Kinda bullshit mechanic if you ask me, but it's there, and it's pretty significant. Not to mention the Tirpitz had a 21-point legendary commander and the Bayerns' captains probably barely had 21 points between them. The Bayerns really never had a chance the moment they decided to push into the Tirpitz. If they had stayed out of secondary range and just plinked him from 13km, they probably would have won. That tier-based fire/dispersion mechanic is one reason why I think Jingles ought to feature for more battles where the protagonist is middle or bottom tier. It's really more a testament to the skill of the player than the free ticket you get handed when you're top tier.
I am so glad that he was able to finish this book before his untimely passing. I just happen to be currently listening, again, for the second or third time to Neptune’s Inferno on Audible.

The thing about the turtleback armour is: it's not actually that much worse at long range. Ectually, Jingles - Bayern guns are 380mm/45 (as are the Tier VII Prinz Heinrich) whereas Tirpitz and Bismarck have 380mm/52, with a lot more velocity and penetration. Bayern is still a significant threat, guns not quite at the level of Warspite but still pretty good for Tier VI.

Edit: Just downloaded your suggestion. I prefer multi work day books. Thanks.
Actually Jingles, Clyde was an Orangutan, which is NOT a monkey. It's an Ape, actually.
Actually John, while you are, of course, correct, you're also technically still wrong. First, all Apes are Monkeys, cladistically. Second, I wasn't the one calling him a monkey, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg were.
@@The_MightyJingles And I was pretty drunk and just daw that movie after it came out on DVD when I used that name as my PSN handle 😅 Just thought it was a funny scene and logged on for the first time on the PlayStation network on the PS2. Forever stuck with the name...
@@The_MightyJingles ok ok I’m only being a knob. Pretty sure they’re all “cladistically” (a word I have never heard before) primates? IDK I’m just making an excuse to have an “actually Jingles” bc I love it when you do that voice, I love your videos but really LOVE that voice, cracks me up every time actually.
absolutely right turn Clyde, lol GG
As soon as I saw the title, I immediately caught the reference.
Yes, we’re old.
@@nmccw3245 And that movie was so hilarious. Especially when the Black Widows were pulled over by the cops after the asphalt scene and couldn't contain their laughter. 🤣🤣
Jingles, he had the DD targeted with his 2nds. HE was shooting at it.
I laughed when I saw the title, loved those Clint Eastwood movies.
Funny thing after watching this video yesterday a complication of right turn Clyde was recommended
funny, I've always known Clint as Kelly in the famous ww2 hilarious movie, Kelly's heroes.
Can we have a update video of Fort Jingles ?
You mentioned that the kill on the z-23 was 'on a ship he probably wasn't even aware of at the time'...go back and look again, Jingles. He had the z-23 marked for secondary focus fire.
"This time I'm not exaggerating."
That's informative. Thanks.
Oh no. Hornfisher died?! Oh that’s just not fair! I watched the two of you in the World of Warships streams!
Not watched the video yet but so happy somebody else quotes this movie too
RIP James D. Hornfischer. "And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came" - John F. Kennedy
I need to watch that movie again
love your videos captain jingles....keep the seas salty my friend
I see that cat game called "Stray" you were telling us about on mingle with Jingles is on steam at a Pre-Purchase price off £21.59.
Sure Tirpitz is good but only when you're top tier and there are few fire starting cruisers. If there are tier 10s or a lot of fire starting cruisers that things just becomes free xp for the reds.
As a true SciFi fan, I never understood why TV and Movies think an airforce is the appropriate defence force for space, when it is clearly submarines and the navy! Which is why MCRN is the big winner in The Expanse.
