    THIS IS NOT PART 2 - but it is kinda "part 1.5" as it's a topic I wanted to discuss that was too far away from the purpose of the 'Exposing ZHC' thing. For those wondering, part 2 will come in a month or so, lots of work to do, I interviewed Zach and many others and want to take my time and do the right thing. Thank you for your patience ❤

    There is SUCH a balancing act on TH-cam especially I feel for artists and I’m so glad you bring it up and show that ie how your tutorial performed versus how other content does. I’m always getting comments like “just paint something, nothing fancy” but as soon as I do that…total flop (I painted a tiny canvas and it got less than half my usual views) I HAVE to have that hook and if I stray even a tiny bit from my usual content, it’ll flop. Thank you for starting the conversation and talking about this!

    I'm sorry for making ANOTHER comment, but something you mentioned resonates with me.
    The change - the way we are being forced to change. Its so hard. There's so much I wanna do, but it's not what the system wants!
    We as artists, already have tremendous pressure to maintain quality in our work, then editing and acting to make art fun! Couple all that with a system that rewards click bait/hype/expensive products, its demotivating.
    There's much I wanna do, but, I'm forced to jump on "hype" and avoid what I'm truly passionate about... to keep up.
    Our comment sections as you mentioned, change. We lose those "friends" we built (not subs, FRIENDS/Family), and gain these bland "give me that" comments.
    Look at Mr beast/ZHC. Comments are just clout chasers and people "begging" for a handout. Wheres the community?.
    Sorry for the rant.
    But , going through struggles with this system, you seem to always express how I feel! THAT is why you're my favourite Creator brother and why I look up to you!

      That said, we damn sure do have the BEST corner of content creation. Our family is special and unique! How we can all just chat with eachother. No community has it like us.
      Love you bro!

      @suburbanhomestead 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      I completely relate to the eroding of community. Despite being a small channel I’ve also seen people drifting away. We are not entitled to anyone’s attention, I get it, but we really don’t build friendships either. Perhaps the problem is that we expect that deep down, and ultimately it is just not possible with the one way communication of a system like this. Comments will never replace face to face communication, and TH-cam exploits the one sided parasocial relationships to its advantage. We as content creators fall into this trap as well, and even “friendships” we thought we had we fellow niche content creators have dissolved as people care only about hype and numbers and overwork themselves into burnout. But I doubt there could be a different system. If continuous growth is necessary and everybody and their cat can make videos, competition for attention (a limited resource) gets fierce and naturally leads sensationalism.

    No joke the minute the video finished I picked up my sketch book and practiced what you had taught. Even watching it a second time to get my technique right. Your tutorial videos (for me) have always been your videos that have inspired me the most. Shaping me to be the artist I am today.

      I'm guilty of not watching more than the first minute of the tutorial video, despite usually watching everything Jazza puts out. I'm not an artist, I don't have any art supplies and I'm not going to start. I'm a numbers and coding guy both in my career and hobbies. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching creative people do amazing things. I wish that Jazza could just make whatever content he likes, and if something doesn't fit his entire audience that it would just be no big deal. The TH-cam algorithm is way too ruthless.

    • @lowiekey

    • @stephalloplayz
      @stephalloplayz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The reality is, the majority of people who watch art content creators such as jazza won't be artists. To say this is a bad thing would be a unfair metric to impose on viewers; people should be able to enjoy the content they want to watch without being forced to do this or that in order to be a part of the community. However, I agree that it is too bad the community that stuff appeals to isn't larger.
      But going all the way around the bush and saying that everyone should watch those videos and revert to a purist side of art TH-cam is not ideal.

Genuine passion, creativity, fun, comedy, while also still being interesting to me (at the time, my interests fluctuate like nobody's business) is what I tend to natually gravitate towards. For me this could also kinda apply to other corners of TH-cam I'm into as well like gaming, beauty, etc. It's very interesting. The trends get clicks but no real interest, which is a very interesting concept.

    • @roymakescomics
      @roymakescomics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Same, anytime the algorithm recommends one of those soulless videos I always click on "Don't recommend this channel to me". They lose legitimate fans and members of the art community and gain materialistic "fans" whose idea of supporting the arts is taking a screenshot of your work and making it their background. I would even go so far as to say that the offenders who post this content, aren't real artists..they're youtube entertainment personalities. TH-cam isn't paying them for their art after all, they're getting paid for being entertaining..therefore they are entertainers NOT artists.

    • @Verylengthyapple
      @Verylengthyapple 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@roymakescomics I think being a real artist is taking ur view point too far. ZHC is an artist. and u cant deny it. but really anyone on TH-cam that does well has to become an entertainer to please the algorithm. It sucks but that’s just how it works. it’s hard to not sell out on this platform and since it’s worked so well, it justifies his behaviour to keep going. but anyways he’s def a real artist or whatever means to be a real artist.

    • @Verylengthyapple
      @Verylengthyapple 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@roymakescomics I think at the end of the day, his passion has run out. and he seeks views and fame more than anything else. Which is completely fair, he does lose that fan base that loves art and gains materialistic viewers but again theres nothing wrong with that. he knows perfectly well what he’s doing, what kind of viewers he’s attracting, and he keeps going because that’s what he wants.

  • @grriot

    I think that it is so much more sustainable, and rad AF, when artists customize random thrifted or found stuff, toys, murals and basically just making old things fking amazing again. • @janellegriffiths91
      @janellegriffiths91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      Yeah as some one who is not an artist but respects the artist, I prefer watching creators transform an odd object that doesn’t have much value in to a whole new piece. The customisation is then what makes the object priceless. When the purpose of the item changes it makes you think more critically about how the artist got to the new concept of the art design.

    Great conversation to have! I find myself constantly getting pulled back and forth between thinking "I need to make something more click-baity like these other channels" and "I just want to make what makes me happy". I have, for the most part, stuck with making what makes me happy and that means that my growth on this platform has been slower, but my audience feels very genuine and like they are with me for the long haul. I do realize that many large creators have an entire team they have to pay so that they can put food on the table!! That's a pressure that I do not have, so I have the luxury of not worrying too much when a video flops. I wish there was a way to fix that but for now I think we all just have to follow or own art compass and do what we think is best for our channel.

    The problem with giving away expensive stuff constantly customized or not is the type of people those videos attract. Most loyal audiences will not suddenly turn into freebie hungry people- it's just that those videos attract those types of people and overwhelm the comment section. They drown out the voices of your loyal subscribers, the people who have stuck by you for years. Some may not even want to bother commenting because they know it won't be seen with the influx of "give me that free thing" comments. Those people boost a video's popularity and the content creator but in most cases they turn away loyal fans who care about the creator as a person.

      I absolutely agree!! There's two art youtubers in particular who I used to love following - I loved their style of art, and their personality.
      But now all their videos have clickbait titles and it annoys me. I would've watched their videos anyway, but then I leave the video feeling tricked by it. Same thing with giveaways. I don't want to watch what's basically a promotional video for a brand (which they probs got for free as payment for doing the video). I watch you because I want to see your artwork. If I wanted to watch an advert for a product - then I would..!!
      I know they're trying to beat the algorithm but if everyone stopped doing that, then the algorithm would change.

      I was never a fan of those type of videos where the person in the video would be all "comment X to get a chance to win this item" or "if you made it this far comment X". Why? because that's what the comment section would be flooded with. Drowning out the "normal" comments. :/

I really liked seeing the different art styles using the same supplies but I remember wishing that Zack would show more of the artwork and the thought behind some of the beautiful pieces. Something like seven years ago I stopped doing art because I thought that I was bad at it, and there was no point for me. Two years later, I was drawing a little bit here and there, not much, and going through a rough time at school, and I stumbled across one of your whiteout videos. Your enthusiasm was infectious, and it made me want to create so badly that I started seriously drawing again. It, along with your videos, helped me through a few painful years, and now art is a big chunk of my identity. I am following a TH-camr that I watched go from a very small channel to a much larger channel. It was such a cool thing to watch, but also came with the switch from her reading and reacting or responding to every single comment on her videos to a very limited number because obviously no one can keep up with that many comments. So while it's exciting, there is a little bitter to the sweet that comes with channel growth.

You don't ever deny using certain tactics or making changes to grow your channel or just stay relevant. You recognize that some of this stuff can come off as "fake", but in my eyes, you've always been "community first", and that's why we (or at least, I) understand. We want you to keep making videos. I feel like it's also a metaphor for how society works in general these days. Projecting a fake image, focusing on money and what sells, a gradual reduction in authenticity that cannot compete with mass production and social pressures.
    I enjoy watching your videos because they make me laugh. Even when you try these 'mainstream' trends, there is always a "Jazza" twist to it, and I think the self-awareness you show also makes a difference because it feels more honest. It's what has kept me coming back regardless of whatever new thing you try, because there's always that down to earth self-awareness you communicate perfectly through humour which I thoroughly enjoy watching.
    It takes courage to publically speak out about these issues, and I take my hat off to you for addressing it. It shows me you're a truly genuine creator and value both what you create and your fans (not that we weren't already aware anyway, but it's refreshing to see regardless). I think it's truly a shame that to survive on this platform one has to often concede their morals. Glad you've opened this into a conversation people need to have.

    I agree that giveaway content is a huge turn-off for me, and I end up skipping "customizing" videos because of that -- they're almost guaranteed to be shallow, a tiny percentage of the actual video, and the tone is annoying as hell because the artist turns into a show host/hype beast, and their actual personality and what gives them their uniqueness and authenticity disappears as they constantly try to out-do their activity, their editing, and their presentation. I also never want to personally contribute to shaping the algorithm into pushing creators to do giveaway content. It feels so unhealthy for everyone involved, and it's a breeding ground for scams.
    I'll give my fave creators the benefit of the doubt should I see a title and thumbnail hinting at that giveaway content, though, and as long as it's not truly a turn into that direction, I'll give 'em love and support the direction I prefer to see: an emphasis on fun, creativity, and community.

    It’s fun that customizing is a big thing, now; however, when I was customizing my own items in the 80s and 90s, it was mocked. Sometimes, people need to make art on whatever is available. I am glad it is trendy, but I hate the artificiality of many channels.

    "All it took was compromising my values!", that hit really hard. In my mind what I heard was "One step closer to burnout!". :(
    What I want is for the creator to do his own thing, because as long they enjoy what they are doing, people will follow them. Might take time, but the community they build, is theirs.
    Thank you for the honest view. Your experience is fascinating. I really like when you pull out the curtain a bit and reveal the "data side" of youtube. It's really interesting and depressing at times (I love tutorials, but youtube doesn't....)
    In the end of the day, as much as I hate it, youtube is a business, and youtube will change the AI for what is better for them and not the creator. But, I hope the creators in the art community continue strong, finding balance and doing what they enjoy and inspires them.

    I've looked up to you for a while now! As an artist and as a creator, I, like many others, resonate with what you said-- because it's the truth. It's not just on TH-cam either, but on TikTok, Twitter, Twitch, and almost every single platform nowadays.
    This is especially true for new creators because the bar is set so high. However, creators that have been on the platform for a while, especially those that are full-time, don't have it any easier either because of that very pressure to change into what the algorithm wants while also somehow still staying true to the content they and their community enjoy.

      I guess a part of the problem is that if you're doing it to make an entertaining show, if you find that the tools you use are sub-par, there's a lot of pressure to keep the show rolling, due to it costing money and that very important time, to fix the mistakes and assure quality. The more work you put into details that the audience doesn't care about or even notice, the more time you're losing into the void, if all you care about is the success of your channel. Nothing too wrong in that, it's just kinda, a personal choice on what is your main product - your show or your art. Not everyone with an art show has artistic integrity, that is clear.

    It’s so interesting to see Jazza’s time on the platform. His authenticity always prevails, even when that isn’t what the platform is telling him to do. That’s how you build a good community. There have been many reflective videos where he acknowledges that he’s gotten caught up and “played the game”, but when it was clickbait, he followed that trend, and then realised it didn’t feel right, and dialled it back. When it was being loud and obnoxious (but consistent 😉), he over-did that as well, but it didn’t feel right, and he dialled it back. In a career and on a platform that is so volatile and feels like it could fall from under you at any moment, making the decision to not play the game full-on, and instead choosing to work out a balance between making stuff that works for the platform and prioritising the authenticity and passion for art and creativity, I truly feel that, despite perhaps misstepping in the eyes of his true community and audience for the sake of growth/appeasing TH-cam as a platform, he has always navigated that movement very openly and elegantly. There was a period where I preferred watching the vlog channel over the main channel, because Jazza was being honest and authentic there, as opposed to the loud, extremely exaggerated “TH-camr” on the main channel. But he has always found a way to come back to creating a type of content that walks that line very well, with exciting, clickable thumbnails that (most of the time) aren’t misleading, or unintentionally so, and that makes me respect him immensely as an entertainer and entrepreneur. He takes the direct feedback of the community into account, shows that he doesn’t feel “better than” and even pokes fun at himself for “having to” sell merch, art boxes etc. That’s just part of running a successful business. But the quality of the products and the passion with which he works on them show through the (vlog channel) camera. I have consistently watched Jazza’s content since the tutorials and character design sessions, and have always come back to his content even if some videos turned me off for a short while, because he always “corrected” back towards prioritising quality content and community. I have only ever purchased one “big TH-camr” product, and it was the Ultimate Creativity collection. If I lived in Australia, I would 1000% have applied for the roles he has advertised, as aside from being in line with my skillset and interests, Jazza Studios feels (from what we see on video, but knowing the authenticity behind that goes back to before it was just Jazza in his shed) like an amazingly engaging, challenging and exciting company to work for.
    TL;DR Jazza has always very elegantly navigated the platform, pivoting his content with what worked for TH-cam, sometimes forgetting to prioritise his audience, but always readjusting and dialling back the changes to prioritise art and creativity, and with openness and authenticity.
    Thanks for showing and acknowledging your mistakes. That shows true care for the community!

    I think that in the vein of youtube changing, it says a lot about the way Jazza handles this channel that I've stuck around for as long as I have (and that I plan to stick around much longer as well). I've been watching Jazza's videos for well over 5 years, and while I did drift away for a bit around 2018 or so, I came back and still enjoy these videos. It sucks that youtube puts such pressure on it's creators, those who keep the entire operation going to begin with, to conform and make as much money as possible, but I do think its impressive how Jazza manages (though not without struggles) to balance that pressure with a level of individuality and integrity. It's hard to maintain a consistent audience, grow with said consistent audience, and still at least somewhat apease the youtube gods, but somehow Jazza manages that most of the time.

  • @akrembug

    This. This right here. Jazza, I am so appreciative of your honesty and authenticity. It's what keeps me coming back to your channel.
    Yes, I love all of the quirky weird video stuff you do. Yes, I love to see you do give aways. Yes, I love to see the Hollywoodesk style goofy filming and presentation. But when it comes down to it, what keeps me coming back to watch every one of your videos (without even seeing the thumbnail or the title when I get a notification) is the fact that you continue to be true to yourself. You are honest with us the viewers and you take the time every so often to be real and serious with us about things in real life. To me that is a huge part of what makes your content great.
    I think we need more content like this on TH-cam, where we see the real side of the TH-camr and not just this false persona/character they put on. That being said, I totaly understand clickbait and how the TH-cam algorithm works. So it is impossible to not have some sort of clickbait and just be serious/real all the time, because TH-cam after all, like you said, has now become an entertainment platform. But I think you do a fine job of finding the balance within that.
    Keep up the good work my man!

    I think getting a custom anything might be cool. Like it doesn’t have to be a fancy electronic, I just think the customized item itself would be super special. Think of what people pay for fan merchandise, yes it might be overpriced at times but its still something that genuinely like. if I genuinely like your channel having an original piece of art from you, especially something cool and unique would be amazing. On that note I would be really disappointed if the art didn’t last, like pick an object that holds the paint well or at least be honest if it’s not perfect (you do the honesty persona pretty well and it still works), it’s always cool to see artists exploring new mediums anyways. I think your wrong though, I would be genuinely upset if I just had the object without the customization, specifically I would be disappointed by having lost the customized aspect. It’s like how slow or incredibly spotty wifi can be infinitely more annoying than no wifi, because it makes you care and then lets you down, even if objectively something is supposedly better than nothing.
