    An instant classic. So futuristic in 1983 and even today the vector graphics have great appeal. I remember that with a friend we went to a videogame fair to see the Amiga conversion and he FAINT of the emotion 'cause he had spent billions in the arcade..good old times.

    The MS-DOS port is a game I have spent SO many hours playing. Audio aside, its as good as you could hope for as far as early MS-DOS arcade ports go. And in DOSBox, you can alter the difficulty, by speeding up or slowing down the virtual CPU.

    In defence of the Amiga version, there is an option to reverse controls (F2 if I remember rightly) so the ability to play with reverse controls is there. But honestly, no one really plays Star Wars on the Amiga with a joystick, we use the mouse as it is far more accurate. I honestly think they could have had a few more tunes in the Amiga version, and smoothed the frame rate a little too. Its a competent port but could have been better.
    We definitely were handed short shrift with the Spectrum port. The 128K Spectrum was out by this time and could easily have had the same sound effects as the CPC but nothing was done. Whilst not exactly the same, 3D Starstrike for the Spectrum is for me the better game on that system.

    Hahaha. Anything from the early Star Wars titles is A-Okay with me Mark. Such memories playing the arcade version and having a ball spending tokens in the machine to here the Star Wars theme at the same time. 8^)
    Nice work as always Mark. Keep it up bro.

    good example of what arcades were about, namely games you couldn't realistically play at home around the time of release, meaning you were either not getting the game, or a getting an imitation of it.
    arcades were a good way for most people to see what games were going to look like at home 3-5 years later, and that has sadly been lost.

    The controls in this game always confused me. It never really felt like you were piloting a ship when you're moving a crosshair around the screen. In fact, with the first C64 version, I couldn't get used to the pilot controls where down is up, so I hacked a Y-connector and swapped the up and down lines. I have no problem with pilot controls in games where you're actually piloting a ship (or in FPS games where I prefer them), and in later years, I got used to the controls, but it still seems weird to fly your ship by moving a crosshair around the screen.
    Trivia: A Star Wars arcade machine was featured in one episode of Marvel's Runaways, being used to distract a security guard. Strangely, they never actually mention the name, even though it's clearly visible on the cabinet and they talk about it like it's rare and priceless.

    Star Wars Arcade by Atari is truly innovative game. Without it, rest of the Star Wars Games, Star Fox and a lot other games wouldn't exist.
    X68000 version is the best, despite not being actual port, with music by Yuzo Koshiro.
    Atari ST port is surprisingly very good. Motorola 68000 of Atari ST can be more powerful than both ones in Amiga and Mega Drive, but Atari ST can only run at lower framerates and programming games is easier on the other machines.
    Am I only person in the world who prefers up=up and down=down, not vice versa. Amiga port might be for me. Maybe these ports should have included option for controlling, just like all modern piloting games.

  • @iXien
    @iXien 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Even the second C64 version is a miss, I suppose Vektor Graphix used the same routines as on the other ports, sadly it wasn't a good idea on a computer with a CPU cadenced at only 0,985 (PAL) / 1,023 (NTSC). CPC version is nice indeed and I spent a lot of time on it as a kid. BBC Micro version shows what it should be if they decided to use mode 0 instead of mode 1. Of course faster but I think it's better here with mode 1 resolution.
    And you're so right on Amiga, and you know how I love Amiga, it feels like ruining a conversion was a challenge. As if the objective were systematically to try to do the best possible but slipping a detail that killed everything. Once again a game developed by a very young and isolated developer with nobody behind to tell him he's making a mistake. Of course when Vektor Graphix bring back the series on Amiga, they immediatly add an option to invert Y axis in Empire Strikes Back.

  • @johns6265
    @johns6265 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    According to an interview with the owner of Domark back in the 80s they cut the sound on the Spectrum version to boost the frame rate. Basically a last ditch measure to rescue a conversion that had gone badly. Spectrum owners stuck with 3D Starstrike instead.
    I wish the Sharp X6800 version had been ported more widely, it looks like a lot of fun and ironically more open than Factor 5's 2002 take on the same sequence in Rogue Squadron 2.

    btw that feature on the PC can backfire, alot of older games in particular can end up being unplayable due to the speed being too high , since alot of these old arcade ports were programmed to run on an Intel 8088 at 4.7mhz, and didn't expect improvements (ie the idea of an upgrade was new, most other companies simply had you buy a new , incompatible machine)

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes. I've experienced that in the past with some games being unplayable on a newer system.

    • @lightdark28
      @lightdark28 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      its not even just arcade games, some of the Lucasarts and Sierra adventure games in the 80s and 90s have the same issue, where the game will either not start if the CPU is too fast, or the sound won't work , etc.
      It even happend with some mid 90s RTS games, Warcraft and C&C both had overly fast scrolling on anything that was faster an original Pentium.
      the joys of PC gaming at the time

    • @dartsma464
      @dartsma464 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice to see that the Spectrum get a port from the Amstrad for a change. As you said in the video the Spectrum version is slower than the Amstrad version and it have no ingame sound. That's what happens when you get a game not written for your system....

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read somewhere that the spectrum version did originally have sound but the game ran even slower so they removed all the sound to give the CPU more processing time. Of course the Spectrum should have been able to run this game faster with sound but like you said, that's what happens when a game is nit disigned for the system it's running on.

    haha...the good old C64 having two versions of the same game. How not to still loving it?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That seemed to be a pretty common thing on the C64. There tended to be a US developed version and European developed version of quite a few games.

    • @jaymzjulian
      @jaymzjulian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of the reason for that is that the PAL and NTSC markets for the c64 were quite different - on the commerical the NTSC market tended to be rom cart and disk based (the star wars presented here was only released on rom cart), whereas in the PAL markets rom carts weren't a big thing due to the cost, and indeed the disk drive in many PAL markets cost more than the computer itself(!). This tended to limit what you could achieve in the NTSC market originally, since carts were generally only 16k or 32k at most back then (later carts, like the ocean ones, got as large as 512kbytes - of course marketas as 4mbits :)) and later limited the PAL market, since you had to make your game work in that linear tape format.
      Additionally, when you start talking of later games, the versions of the c64 are actually not terribly compatible with each other in terms of timing - and while the c64 did provide quite a few hardware abilities out of the box, it was lacking items like the hardware multiplexor and such like, meaning that such features were implemented in software, and tended to be quite timing dependant (pirates had a field day with NTSC/PAL fixing games to work between systems). For later games, this became a real problem because while you actually have a 10% faster CPU on NTSC machines (making 3d games like this a bit faster on it), you have 20% more cycles per frame on the PAL, making it easier to make the sort of action games which were popular in the 80s on those systems. Turrican is one of the more famous examples of this, where the USA release actually dropped all color scrolling in order to function!
      Of course there was also the licensing concerns - a lot of c64 arcade conversions particularly were licensed to companies for the PAL markets only, anecdotally to avoid angering nintendo in the USA. I'm not 100% sure how true these anecdotes are, however... probably a lot more just commercial concerns. I suspect this is a lot more a case of "the c64 was close to dead in that market by then" problems.

    I played the heck out of the MS-DOS version back in the day. Even with 8MHz turbo enabled, you're emulating the game way, way, WAY too fast for period hardware. One cool thing about that version was that there was a small sound chip attached to the inside of the box (like the kind in greeting cards) that would play the Star Wars theme when pressed! That's clearly how you were supposed to get background music. ;-)

      I agree! Those two ports had the "inverse" controls due to them actually being meant to be played with a mouse. I spent a good amount of time with the arcade game back in the day, as well as, the C64 versions, but the mouse control on the Amiga gave the game a whole new feeling.

    You forgot the Domark version for the Atari 8-bit Computers. You only showed the Parker Bros one. Also, you can switch the controls on the Atari ST version (and possibly on the Amiga as well). The samples you recorded on the ST sounded awful. I think it might be an emulator issue as I remember them sounding clearer.
    I'd also suggest Space Fighter for the ST. It's the same gameplay (with minor differences but this time with filled polygons). Anyway, unlike the popular opinion, there are faster Atari ST's and Amigas where you can play the game faster.

    • @miikasuominen3845
      @miikasuominen3845 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most surely the horrible sample quality is because of the emulation. I don't remember them being particularly bad, back at the day. I'll fire up my STE during the weekend and test it out ;) A good excuse to update the Gotek's firmware at the same time, because HxC2001 seems to have updated it about thousand times since I last checked :D

    What an experience this was in the arcade and a lovely sit down cabinet with a very nice controller, still holds up well today.
    I had this on the Spectrum 48k but i think the Star Wars clone 3D Star Strike was the better game and it's sequel Star Strike 2 even had some shaded polygons which was just incredible for the under-powered Speccy.;)

    • @miikasuominen3845
      @miikasuominen3845 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Speccy was actually much more suited for vector graphics, than for example C64. CPU speed is about the only thing, that counts there :)
      And 3D Starstrike is an excellent rip-off :)

    • @chunkycjw
      @chunkycjw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Used to love playing Tau Ceti on the Speccy too, which also featured some nice shaded polygons and blew my tiny mind at the time, yep the Speccy could do vector graphics better than the C64 and isometric games though the C64 soon caught up with the Last Ninja, Head over Heels and Batman.
      I loved both the Speccy and C64, in-fact was going to get a C64 after having owned a Speccy for years and my mate showed me pictures of games running on the Sega Master System which i ended up getting and loved too, still play the Wonder Boy series to this day. ;)

    Are you emulating the Atari ST? I only ask because my version of Star Wars has much clearer samples than what has been recorded here. I do know that the ST's mono audio uses several channels to produce sampled speech. Your recording of the sampled speech sounds like there is a stereo separation issue. This was a common problem if you stereo modded your STfm.

      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Amiga version having backwards controls is a strange thing. I'm sure there must be a way to configure them.
      The team behind the X68000 version also made Mass Destruction on the Saturn. A really nice overhead shooter. NMN made some great games.
      I'm not sure how many X68000 units were sold but it must have been popular with all the support it received from 3rd party companies.

      Ah yes, Mass Destruction seems pretty cool, always wanted to try this one.
      Not sure though about the X68000 being popular given its price, $3000 wasn't for everyone. The games are hard to find too. 5200 should have the advantage over the Atari 8 bit computers, but only if you have the 5200 joystick controller. This is one of the few games that benefit from non self centering analog, as well as Missile Command.
    A modern analog thumbstick would be too small for control and always pull the curser center screen when you let go, and digital control like emulation would make it no different than Atari 8 bit.
    I imagen this is emulation, and likely dials each direction to a set speed. instead of the 5200 controller which acts exactly like a computer mouse or trak ball. It moves and stops as fast as where you put it. Likely how the arcade cab was too. Easier to rack in points when you can move and stop the curser fast as an eye.
    Space Harrier is another analog joystick game.. but home systems dropped that idea after 5200 died.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it sounds trivial it's really not. Mouse control accuracy makes a huge difference in Missile Command, I wont even touch the digital versions after playing 5200. So I imagen it could be the same with this since it's a moving curser game.
      Digital you push the curser.
      Analog you are the curser.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact it looks like you used a mouse while playing the arcade version. Imagen that but with 5200, because that's what it is. Its really interesting placing the joystick where you want the curser instead of just pushing the curser. Things like this are the only reason 5200 could have any appeal over the Atari 800.
