    Hello Jeff! It's great to have some time to drop in and see what you're up to! It's 25 degrees here, and it's so nice to see warm weather somewhere. I can't even imagine those numbers in early Feb. at 06:36 beautiful craftsmanship there! I think you are going to enjoy the Layens Hives and Beekeeping With A Smile suits you! Georges de Layens definitely understood brood production. At 11:00 have you tried with and without lemongrass oil side by side to see the difference in scout frequency? :) 13:34 you are so right, I have neighbor beekeepers who have never purchased bees, they just get my swarms :) IF you start to construct and sell Layens Hives please put me on your list! I'm going to save the rest of my questions for another time... Thank you! :)

      I know you are a busy man Professor Fred, and I thank you for taking some of your precious time to watch and leave a comment, it is greatly appreciated. I do love how our bees build up so early, and what a joy it is for me to witness it each year. This is the first year I've use something besides lemon grass oil, and the only reason I used it was because it was given to me. If I had to pay for it, I'd use the lemon grass oil....way less expensive and I catch all the swarms I want to. Hey, I bet your neighbor loves you for all those free bees he gets. I just started to build the Layens Hive today and should have it finished by Wednesday. If you want, schedule a vacation and come on down and we will build you a few as well. God's peace brother.

      Love the community.
      Y’all have a place to source lemongrass oil? Was ordering from Glory Bee but when they changed ownership the company gradually sold off the essential oils. That company had a great price and pure quality.
      Love the wood work.

    The bees saying "what took you so long to deliver our new home?" I had one on two different days checking out my smelly garage. Amazing senses of smell bees have.

    Purple Matins probably love your part of America; mosquito heaven! They're really pretty flying around in the evening. We used to have a little apartment house built on a tall post to house their nests, always a pleasure to sit around at the end of day watching them fly around.

    Wow, those new swarm traps are so pretty; you do some NICE woodworking! I'm looking at getting a Laynes hive. I am far too old (and short) to be wrangling honey supers over my head! So some type of horizontal hive set up is required. I've drooled over the lovely one you have on your back porch in another video, but I have also been watching Dr. Leo on Doug and Stacy's homesteading channel. Still gathering info, so I think that I'll spend this year planting all kinds of bee friendly plants in my yard and garden to see if I have foragers come around and spend this time doing research and join the local beekeeping group.

    Totally enjoyed!! I’ve got swarm fever. I gotta get my traps out. Last year I had two deeps on top of one another, baited. Came home from work and ohh my. Huge swarm decided on that one. It was a monster swarm that filled the box. I just let them build comb down off the frames. And let me tell you - they are as happy as can be naturally drawing it down. Real fast paced colony and the comb did not fall in the hot Georgia weather.

I feel that anyone interested in backyard beekeeping should try them out. I know the biggest drawbacks is availability of equipment the more people using them the more people will build them. we are just starting our bee journey and after extensive research we are starting out with Layens hives, even though no one at the local bee club uses them, Ive begun to purchase "extras" so I can be prepared especially since there are no local (layens) supplies available . I see people are trying to convert Langstroth to horizontal hives but my gut tells me that the frames are too short for overwintering, I considered this due to availability but buying into Layens. what are your thoughts ?

    Why did you decide on a Layens hive compared to a long horizontal? Now you need a different extractor. SML BEEs / SWVA

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      The main reason I wanted to have the Layens hive was to keep bees in a more natural way. By giving the bees a deeper space, larger frames, and a horizontal configuration, the bees can manage their colony easier. Still, I'm keeping all my Langstroth's, they are my honey makers. Also,there is no need for another extractor, I want cut comb from this hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Jeff, I love your videos and I have learned a lot from them. I think I remember you making a split and just turning the entrance of the new have 180° from the entrance of the old hive. Did I imagine that or did I see you do it? The reason I’m asking is I really don’t have anywhere else convenient to move on you split to

    • @JeffHorchoff

    Mr Ed, the honey you sent me tastes different than our local honey. Do you have any idea what the bees used to make it. What's so cool about bees is the so many variations on taste their honey can have, and that is due to the source of nectar that the bees draw from. Our honey is primarily a combination of privet and tallow with other things in it as well. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Thomas.

    I have heard of those hive boxes but never saw any in person. My only concern would be the weight of a full box. Normal full honey boxes with deep frames are really tricky to move with 1 person and heavy and I would think you would need some kind of hoist system for the bigger ones.

    • @sandracimonetti5307
