    And here are the results of placing a double screened dividing board into a beehive. With 62 of our hives split using this method, all 62 of them, that 100%, formed emergency cell queens proving the efficiency and easy of using this method. I hope you will try this out for yourself. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all.

    Jeff and Charlie, we all hope you are taking care of yourselves. You are both a National Treasure and the bee community would suffer without your knowledge and GREAT sense of humor. I am a first year beekeeper and have grown my 5 frame nuc into two 8 frame brood boxes and think I need to add another.. they have almost filled 2 medium honey supers already not to mention loads of honey in the brood boxes. I have a feeling our honey crop will be a great one this year based on the number of bees in the hives this early on. So awesome! Going to be going into three more of mine today to split out. Did four yesterday that were so full that I ended up with 8 nucs from them. It’s my third year so I don’t have the equipment built up or I’d much rather do your method for splitting! Much easier and can do more hives that way. I’ll probably come away from today’s with 5 more nucs from the number of bees I know they have! Have a great weekend, keep on making more cause I’m keeping on watching lol. God Bless!

    Thank you for doing this follow up video. Because of your last video, I made a double screen board and split a hive on Friday. The queen was on the bottom in mine. Is there any reason to move her to the top? I plan to look for queen cells next week. Pretty exciting to learn a new method. I hope it works out.
    I also made a traditional split, pulling 3 frames of brood and a lot of bees from a hive that was huge and the queen and a bunch of bees from a hive that was making swarm cells. Made for a really big split, a deep plus a medium nuc, but that's good, because they will fill up quickly, and will probably go into full sized boxes within 2 weeks. A good start to the season! Thanks again for your great videos and your help.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason I like her in the top is because I will move her from the original location to help reduce the chances of her swarming later in the season. If she is moved, it steals all her field bees as they go back to the original location. God's peace Tony.
      Mr. Ed

  • @kittydude14
    @kittydude14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I always learn from and enjoy your vidoes! Twith the abundance of bees and a lot of brood into the top box with the old queen and fewer bees and brood? hank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! I am wondering why you don’t put some bees and a frame of brood from the the bottom box? God bless you and your bees!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because there were so many bees in both the top and bottom box, I want the field bees from the top box to return to the original hive after I move the top box away. This helps reduce the chance of the old queen swarming by stealing her workers and helps the bottom box hive bring in nectar. My main concern about keeping bees is honey production. Thanks for watching. God's peace Mary.

    Hey Mr. Ed! I've learned so much by watching your videos. We installed a double screen board and was pleasantly surprised one week later with multiple emerging queen cell capped. That was 4/1. Checked today to see if those splits have mated queens, eggs, or larvae and there was nothing. How long should I wait for the mated queen to show eggs or larvae? Also, after said time, should I combine the split back to the original hive? We're in a nectar flow now and I only saw one drone today. When we did the split.....there were many. Thanks so much for all that you do. God Bless you Mr. Ed!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing the bee have taught me, patience. I give the bees 4 weeks after I find the emergency cell, by that time you should see brand new larva in the cells. If at that point I see no new larva, and out of 80 some odd splits this year there were none, thank you Jesus, I will add another frame of brood from one of my old queens to let them try again. Then the whole process starts again. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Carolyn.

      Hello Judi, and thank you so much for wanting to support the monks and their works, for the blessings you gave, and for taking the time to watch this video. St. Joseph Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, is located about 50 miles north of New Orleans, Louisiana, and is home to about 34 monks ranging from the age of 27 to 84. They do have a web page, and the address is:
      saintjosephabbey.com
      if you'd like to find out more about it. Also, it is the largest seminary college in the United States. Of course they happily accept all donations as this is their primary source for sustaining their lifestyle, but they also have several cottage industries that contribute to their well being as well, and these you will discover if you look at the web page. Any contribution goes into a general fund, however if you specify "Abbee Honey" on the donation, the funds will be directed to that department, and this help me tremendously to continue the work I do as a volunteer for the monks. Again, thank you so much for your support and your blessing. Also, I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. I'm grateful for your binging of my channel, and I sincerely hope you continue to watch. Also, I post a brand new video every Friday morning. Now about a queen getting mated. When a new queen emerges from a cell, and becomes the new queen of the hive, she may have to kill off any contender queens that were placed in the hive when her cell was placed in it, she generally waits a few days and then flies out of the hive for a mating flight. She may do this 4 or 5 times over the next few days, but after she is fully inseminated, she never leaves the hive again. Thanks for watching. Until the next one, God's peace.

    What is the difference between swarm cells and queen cells?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A swarm cell IS a queen cell. There are 3 different types of queen cells. A swarm cell, made when a hive is preparing to swarm. A superseding cell, made when the hive wants to replace the existing queen. And an emergency cell, made when the queen dies unexpectedly, and the colony needs a new queen right away. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. If the queen was in the bottom shouldn’t there be cells in the top? Why would you have to reverse the boxes and come back in a week?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes there would be emergency cells in the top box if the queen was in the bottom box. However, because I want to move the old queen from the original hive location to reduce her work force to slow her down so she won't swarm again, I reverse the boxes, steal all the field bees from her as they will now go into the other box, and a week later move the old queen to a new spot stealing her workers once again. Because she is already laying eggs, she will quickly make up for the loss in field bees and actually produce a surplus of honey which I will then harvest from her in the summer.In all of my 40 plus years of keeping bees, I have never treated a colony. do I have hives that die? All the time, yet my annual losses are almost ALWAYS smaller than the national loss, 35% this year. I also don't go into my hives and inspect them, I set the bees up, give them space, split them, and then collect my honey. I go into my hives only about twice a year, other than that, they are on their own. I figure they know a lot more about being a bee than I do so I give them a lot of latitude. However, I still collect my rent every summer...and if I'm lucky, a fall harvest as well. I will say this about these bees, they have some great genetics, and come splitting time, the split is going back to the abbey with me. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace David.

    Jeff, thank you for your videos, Question, I have a brood box that is now Queenless, not sure why. the bees made 2 emergency cells , sealed and both were nice formed cells of good size. ... I inspected the 2 cells 15 days later, I found both cells were opened on the side /middle of the cell, and after several inspections over a week no queen found
    Why would the bees build nice sealed cells then open the cell from the side middle and destroy a queen when they need a queen.? Any thoughts

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you have a queen in your box and you just have not seen her. Typically, it is the queen who chews a hole in the cell to kill the other queen that is in there. I would look for new brood, either eggs or uncapped larva, in another week or so if the queen can't be found. That is the simplest way of knowing you have a queen without spotting her yourself. God's peace brother.

      It takes a queen bee to lay a fertilized egg. Basically, a queen will lay an egg in a cell that was prepared to generate another queen, either a swarm queen or a superseding queen. With emergency cells, the first queen out will kill all the others. So no, you do not. Thanks for watching. God's peace James.

    Why don't the bees in he box without a queen just fly round the other side and get back to her?

      The reason they do not leave the box and fly around is because most of them would not know how to get there...even though it's directly behind their old entrance. The reason for this is bees are very sensitive to the entrance to their hive, their internal GPS are set on those coordinates, and that is the ONLY spot they know to get into the hive. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.
