Habitant Soup is the Quebec-Canadian name of the soup. The recipe comes from Bernardin, which is the Canada’s branch of Jarden who owns both Bernardin and Ball (sister companies). We usually make it with yellow split peas who hold their shape a bit better. Glad you used broth. We usually use ham stock made from our easter or xmas ham bones. That recipe is hands down the best I’ve ever made. 🇨🇦🫙
yellow ones are good too loved Canada still wanted to see Quebec side. Big big country. I've seen about half at 52. Don't like outsiders much then. Yeah, us we got seats next to the kitchen doors. Always😅but I didn't care. It was beautiful there. I'll adapt or deal or walk away.
Thank you for this video! I refused to eat spit pea soup because I do not like green peas. Then, a cup of it came along with a restaurant meal and I tried it. OMG! I had NO idea what I had been missing. Absolutely delicious! It has been a staple of my soup making ever since. During lockdown I learned how to pressure can and make sure to keep a supply of this on my shelves. If you work outside the home, this is an ideal item to take to work for lunch. It is also a great gift to share. Hubby's expression when tasting it was priceless!
3 things about this video I LOVE. Split Pea soup! The Ball canning book is my go-to source, I will make this recipe. And meeting your husband. That sort of response and silly expressiveness is very much like my hubby on my videos. I Love it. Being able to laugh together is the BEST!!! Although I can't do many fermented foods because of a histamine reaction that causes me asthma symptoms, I do like your intelligent approach. It is obvious that you do your research. Thank you! Now to make this soup and use your method for canning beans without the farts.
Ball has some great canning books for sure! That sucks you can’t enjoy many ferments. Have you looked into the connection between leaky gut and histamines?
This. It took me 20 years to find out I was celiac.. IBS, Lactose intolerance, and even asthma?? Gone. Gained muscle and feel healthier. Part of that is just from being forced to eat healthier, though.@@FermentedHomestead
My Oma always used ham stock or something of that nature to her split pea soup when it got fancy there was smoked smoked sausage bits in it...ops now I'm hungry lol
Oh girl..this is perfect. This was one of those things I thought was a NO NO ,so gad to see that it's not. I'm doing this for sure ..like this weekend 😂😮
Lol, I'm one of the crazy ones that loves split pea soup. Yesterday, we spent at our amish friends' house canning beef bone broth for my first time. We're finishing it off today. I'm so excited!!! All together, we got like 15lb of beef to can off the bones, too.
@@FermentedHomestead it's so cool. We had enough bones to fill one of the big rectangular amish water bath canners with bones just to boil it into broth.
Excellent recipe, Anna! Pea soup is my favorite. Just freeze dried a batch, but I still want to have some in jars. Wonderful explanation about the air evacuation in the canner, thank you!!!
Just canned a double batch of this. I was a little nervous about adding the allspice (not a fan of it) but WOW, it's delicious. Thanks so much for sharing! I also watched your kombucha video and now I'm making and loving that as well.
I need to try this because this is my least favorite thing but willing to try your recipe. However we don’t eat pork but found smoked turkey tails taste the same really! A friend brought me potato soup and after the first taste I couldn’t believe it told my husband she used ham. Ask her and she told me it was turkey tails! Never would have guessed it.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, especially since you know what really got split pea soup should taste like. We didn't eat it much growing up, but I always wanted to. Thanks Anna! Thanks hubby too for taste testing and sharing his thoughts 😊. Guess you're off to make rolls 😂.
Thank you for sharing. I make a fantastic split pea soup every winter, in fact made a pot yesterday. I will definitely be using this recipe and canning it. Thanks again. 🙏🙌❤️
Split Peas Soup is one of our staples; I never have leass than 6 quarts in the pantry. I use ham bones (left from the Easter and Christmas hams) to make ham broth just for use in canning Split Pea Soup. I also add a small bay leaf to each quart before canning. Nothing like a big bowl of Split Pea Soup topped with homemade garlic croutons with a generous sprinkle of Pecorino Romano over the top to warm cold bones in the winter!
yum o rama 🤤 inspiring!! thanks for sharing! 🥰 it never (ok almost never) gets super wintery where I am in the Grand Valley of western Colorado, but I'm a weirdo and love hearty soup all year long 🍲🥣
Thats funny, I was just thinking about making some and canning it up ,thank you for the tip on cleaning the jars extra well, I would have thought I did something wrong, if it didn't clean up as normal 😊😊
I love split pea soup, but I do not eat pork, so instead I used smoked Turkey thighs. Do you think I could substitute the ham with smoked Turkey meat? If not I will make vegetarian. One more question- why can you can slit peas but not a harder lentil like black or brown lentils?
Great video! I’m not a fan of spilt pea soup but I think I have everything to make this lol I think it’s worth a try. Thank you, Anna! Robert, you crack me up lol thank you for the taste test!
For some reason just the smell of peas cooking turns my stomach. But I would love to love this soup. A bowl of this creamy warmth sounds so good. Please enjoy a bowl for me…lol. ❤❤❤
How uncanny! Guess what is in my oven. I made this recipe with my ham bone and I’m not ready to put in jars because I’m tired. So I put the pot in a 250 oven to hold until morning . I tripled the recipe and added a little potato flake and a dried red pepper. No salt is needed because of the ham. Delicious ! ❤
I never liked split pea soup until my grandmother made it with a broth from boiling the roasted ham bone and leftover ham bits. I like beef broth too. That said, if you don't have broth, or even ham, you can add liquid smoke and sesame oil, and/or caramelize onions. If you cook pea soup a long time and it's usually too thin, add rice at the beginning. It'll cook away to nothing and thicken it up nicely. To make the instant variety just knock the pot over and you have instant spilt pea.
Thanks for this video...I have a ham bone ready for making broth for this soup. I had found this recipe and wondered if it would be good. Thanks for the tips about the soup separating and the peas sticking to jar. 😊
And here I was wondering if pea soup would be too thick to can safely. I am thrilled it can be! I have a ham, and some ham base powdered bouillon. Guess what I’m doing this weekend?😊
I have always used chicken stock to make split pea soup. I like it "pureed" and not chuncky, so I dont usually put anything that makes it look "unappetizing" into the jars as it can always be added to the stock when you heat it up for consumption. When it goes into the jars it is a "thin" texture, but when the jars cool is becomes a layer of thick peas at the bottom and a layer of broth on the top. However, when you warm it up it all becomes a nice smooth and "silky" soup.
I absolutely love split pea soup, or as my daughter called it, Spit pea Stoup. It' being winter we eat lots of soups and stews. Great way to warm up. And my cranberry wine is almost ready too. Another month till the apple carrot wine is ready. A warm glass of that before bed helps get rid of all the aches and pains that come with cold and old age lol. Terrific video and nice to meet the hubby.
I made this last year for the first time. I found out that I don’t care for allspice. Not a problem; I’ll just leave it out! I have the ingredients to make more!
Ha, seeing your hubby eating straight from the sauce pan reminds me of my baby brother doing the same. I have never had split pea soup in my life, but I do ferment split peas among many other foods for my chickens. They eat them up so fast, I have to ration them.
Habitants is a nod to the Quebecers of the past who ate this soup a lot. In Canada we also have a store bought brand called Habitants that carry split pea soup. If you’re a hockey fan the Montreal Canadiens nickname is Les Habitants or the Habs.
I think the "secret" ingredient is the allspice. It is the magic spice that makes ketchup taste like ketchup! I never thought to add it to pea soup. Thanks, Anna!
I just bought a ham at aldi for 89 cents a pound! I’m totally making this split pea soup and canning them in half pints. I’m the only one in the family that will like this so it will be mine, all mine!
I am one of the people who loves split the soup, but for most people I think it’s either a love it or hate it thing I don’t think there’s a middle ground
Love split pea and ham soup. It’s one of those grandmother made dishes that warms your body and soul. Time to can some more since the pipes froze in my house too.
Ok…you convinced me. I’m gonna can me some split pea and ham soup. I can’t recall the last time I had some. If I can’t remember, that tells me it’s been a looooong time. Again, you two are adorable!! Stay warm.
We hit a balmy 19 degrees today with no wind……but it’s snowing. 😢. What a great idea to use beef broth instead of water. I’ll have to give split pea soup another try. Thank you!
The broth is a total game changer! We got above freezing yesterday for the first time in like a week but we’re back to a couple cold days tomorrow. Hopefully next week will be warming up though!
I've never had split pea soup, however yours looks good. Someone gifted me a few bags of dried split peas which I didn't know what to do with them. Thanks for the inspiration. Now I know what I need to do.
My husband's favorite soup on the planet...this is what he looks forward to on holidays because there's left over ham and a bone to toss in the pot.

😅😊 that would be a 20 minute ride away from all people. In most directions. Give or take a kilometer
I make mine just like this! The only thing different is I add diced potatoes so hardy!
That would be yummy!

Just canned pea soup, 1 jar didn't seal....supper😊. My favorite. Thank you for the explanation, it's very helpful to new canners.
You are welcome 😊
Ive never even had split peas but i have 2 bags for some reason. I may try some
We love split pea soup. I'd love to can some up. Thanks for the inspiration!

That sounds delicious! We will be getting our hogs back from the butcher soon and I’m looking forward to making some smoked pig broth!
Oh girl..this is perfect. This was one of those things I thought was a NO NO ,so gad to see that it's not. I'm doing this for sure ..like this weekend 😂😮
Right?! I think because it’s so brothy it’s ok
For those who don't eat ham, I make mine with beef kielbasa.
Yum!
I use smoked turkey sausage.

I just might have to try the single recipe of this. Thanks Anna! Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!
What a coincidence. Just this morning, I pulled a jar of split pea soup for dinner.
Yum!

Pyrex Measuring Cups are ideal for filling jars!
Not going to bother with pint jars... Quarts all the way for that yummy soup.
Habitant is the store bought name for Canadian Pea Soup, yellow peas with ham, that is what it is called in the Bernardin Book for Canning🙂
Good to know 😊
I live in Hamilton Ontario, I am going to use your idea of the beef broth next time I make this soup, Thanks..

I have 7 qt coming off pressure, 5 pts to can tomorrow. Yum, this batch I did not puree. Looks lovely.
So gratefull, thank you. Love the no waste time, voice over , not all the clatter of preparing in real time. Prefectly done tutorial.
Good luck with your frozen water issues. Not fun....ever. The soup looks really good. Thanks for the video and canning infor.

Never had split pea soup. It looks different from what I've seen before. Thanks maybe I'll try it.
I am an absolute soup FREAK; it is my favorite food. And split pea (with lentils) and ham.... just hits the spot!
Thank you for sharing. I make a fantastic split pea soup every winter, in fact made a pot yesterday. I will definitely be using this recipe and canning it. Thanks again.

Allspice. I don't think I have ever used that in a savory dish before. And broth instead of water. Thank you for bringing this recipe to Canuary.
