I’m running a 1904cc in my ‘70. Leave the flywheel, stick with the 40IDFs. I’m running 44IDFs and jetted them per Steve Timms. I don’t have Weber windows. I just made holes with a knock out punch and put in half inch rubber plugs to fill them. Tuning time, I just remove the rubber plugs and run a screwdriver thru and adjust. Your manifolds are the same ol’ standard IDFs that CB Performance has used in their dual kits forever. I’ve got the oval K&N air cleaners and they clear the decklid without standoffs. Good luck, I’ll be watching.
The HPMX Carbs will run beautifully for you. I think we went over the carbs via phone about power. Stock oil cooler, no need for the full flow. Put a filter pump on, no lines. 3.5 qt sump for high Rev. Flywheel needs changed, and yes end play needs redone. Ps most likely kaddy shack carbs would be 40 Kadrons.
I would go with dual 40 IDF’s or 44’s. Oil cooler is a good idea but, not 100% necessary. I would leave the flywheel alone since end play is already set.
I'd definitely use an additional oil cooler. Maybe one of the combo kits with cooler, electric fan and thermostat. If you aren't looking to break new ground, knowledge-wise, just use Weber 34 1-barrels, But the dual 40s should make great (more) power with your combo and you'll expand your know-how related to hot-rodding air-cooled VWs
Some comments. Tall manifolds give more torque. Shorts are for RPM. Get some phenolic spacers for the base of the IDFs from Gary Berg. They insulate the carbs from the manifolds and the carbs are more consistent over the heat range of the motor. I had the noname IDFs and I couldn't get them to sync. One barrel was always off from the others. I swapped the carbs and it followed the carb. 40s are too small to run with 40/35 heads. go to 44HPMXs with 38mm chokes. I've never run a cam that small though. Add a second thermomatic oil cooler . You will need to reset the endplay if you change the flywheel,. I would definitely stick with dual 2 barrels.
Wow, what a cool sponsor to have. That is a great gift. Wish I could help you on the questions but I’m sure you have some much wiser community members than me ..Can’t wait for the chat on Sunday night!!
K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple Slade. Sweet new engine build, keep the flywheel and use whatever carbs you feel most comfortable using. I'm not a fan of using carbs that you need to cut a "window" out to be able to tune things up. Looking forward to your next video and hearing what route you have decided to go down. 👍
I like the HPMX carbs. As good as or even slightly better than the Webers for a lot less. Putting a pair of HPMX 44 on the mild 2387 I'm building for Bernadette my 73 Super.
Hey there, I'm running a 1916cc engine with dual 40mm knock off's. I've made my own carburetor windows. The linkage I'm using is the Gene Berg setup. As for the durability with the carbies I'm finding that they are very finicky I haven't been able to set and leave them as yet. I'll put some pictures up on the Facebook page. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Thanks my friend, I was worried about these cheap knock off’s. I want to enjoy the car and I don’t mind working on it but I don’t wanna keep working on the same issue lol
I really like the combos with 90.5’s such as this one or 2007 or even 2110. Nice cam, compression ratio and carbs. Very nice combo for a reliable street car. A nice Vintage Speed exhaust system would be a cool finishing touch. Dellorto 36’s or 40’s would be optimal but I’ve heard good reviews on these new Empis. Since you cleaned them up you’re good. Since you’re running a conservative compression ratio and will have decklid offsets you probably won’t need an oil cooler. The less oil lines the better.
Sadly, I don't have any relevant experience to help with your Qs, but I enjoyed the video: I can tell you are very excited to see this beautiful engine, and so am I !!
If you fix the brakes and fuel system in the ghia. Maybe remove the deck lid off the ghia. Install the 1904 engine to fine tune those idf carburetors. Plenty of room for your hands to adjust mixture screws.
And in my experience the chinese carbs are excellent. I've been running them in my red bug for 2 or 3 yrs, I don't have the access panels in my inner wheel well as I found adjusting them OK anyway. They're easy to set up just get yourself a synching snail tool to make things easier. I havethe same intakes as you with no clearance problems, but do run a csp bell crank linkage.
Randy built my 1776 we have been friends for a long time. i should have let him build it bigger. lol get a little power and you always want more. congrats on the motor
Try the 40's, if you don't like rhem change them. CB Performance makes some intakes that are closer and you can swap the duals to reach controls from the inside instead of cutting holes. Keep the flywheel. If you run an external oil cooler, I recommend keeping the doghouse cooler also. I would also run a sump. Just my two cents worth. I do enjoy the chats.
If you run reverse manifolds, keep in mind that the throttles are going to operate in the opposite direction. That can be a problem with some center pull linkage.
Hey amigo ,that's gonna be a screamer! Stay with thhse carbs, they had a bad rap before but now evryone knows how to tune them ,if u going single IDF I seen people drilling intake so u have a balance, also I think depending on what u wanna do flywheel is a toss up ,the original one would be fr torque I think, the lighter fr higher revs? Not sure don't quote me ha! But ya leave duals ,and yes make those cutouts....
With full flow, personally I would add an additional cooler. Hopefully someone can share their experience with 34’s and the larger CC, since you are more familiar with the 34’s, may save you a whole lot of trouble. Good Luck 👍👍👍
Keep the IDF's and definitely put the axis panels in. I prefer to run a forge flywheel yes, you'll have to check end play again if you decide to switch. Good luck you'll like that engine.😎🤠
The heads are big valve you don't want to run 34s. Kadrons with big ventures would be good. You don't have to cut windows for duals it just makes it easier. Stick to the plan save money use what you have.
Hey Slade been a while hope all is well, how exciting that will be a great motor! As far as your engine I would definitely leave the carbs you won't beat how well it will run compared to ict's(baby webers) kadrons, or a single idf. Del's are really nice but the dual 40 idfs will be about perfect for that engine. The idf clones have been pretty good from what I hear so you should be good. I'd start with the oil cooler that's on it and monitor your temps to see if you need to add one later. I'd also run the flywheel your not drag racing with it doing 8k rpm clutch drops just make sure your gland nut is torqued. Catch ya on the flip side Slade!
Hey my friend, how have you been? Thank you so much for chiming in. I truly appreciate it. Yes I think I better run the 40 IDFs, I don’t wanna lose too much horsepower. Although I’m not going to be racing. I was concerned about the flywheel. A lot of people were saying online, get it off of their it will blow up. But I would have to agree with you, I’ll be lucky if I ever go over 4000 RPM to be sincere. Thank you so much I truly appreciate you stopping by.
@SladesVWBeetle you betcha! Been doing a lot of pre winter projects and working on the bug, s10 and 67 c10 but most of all soaking in time with Noah and my wife he's growing faster than a cedar!
I put Kadrons on mine great fit and look. got mine from kaddy shack. Jeff at kaddy shack also sells different hardware for putting air cleaners on that pump more air to the motor. i believe he has a video of installing the hardware which is not expensive cheap actually and what a difference to the car, also if you send him you build sheet he will send all exact jets and so on for your motor. but you will notice the numbers on the jets and all parts you order will be missing numbers. i guess a master never tells everything.beautiful motor cant wait to see it in and running
Keep the flywheel on the engine. Its good enough to use. Try the IDF carbs. If you don't like them, sell them. If you go with a single carburetor, make sure to modify the header to get the manifold nice and hot. Check your samba PM.
Honestly on that with the big valve heads I would have gone to the 92 thick wall you have enough combustion chamber to go with the bigger displacement. Would probably work better with that combo. That is a lot of air and fuel in there. will work decent on a bug. If you can tighten the deck and step cut the heads tor clearance, you can go much closer to 9 to 1 at near 0 deck. I would stay around 8.75 this will make the dual carbs perform better. low 8s it will not have much bottom end with the 110 and those valve sizes. Either 100 with those valve sizes and low compression like your doing, or higher compression. 110 specs. 1.1 rockers 430 lift 283 duration. 100 specs 420 lift 273 duration. my 1904 is 9 to 1 ported stock valves and web 86 cam. 1.25 ratio. 448 lift and 268 duration. I would highly recommend higher compression with that combo....
Thank you for the comment. I appreciate that. I’m really considering the 34s, just for the ease of tuning. And easier to get to the adjustments. I was going to contact kaddieshack, and see what they have, I believe they have the 40mm kadrons..
I would keep the flywheel and go with a single on the carb. I wouldn’t like having to take a tire off to get to a spark plug Almost all class 11 race cars use a single and they make plenty of power. I like to keep stuff simple especially on a engine
that's a nice long block you getting for the beetle. that one will make a very nice noise. maybe you could keep those no names for the KG? what type of muffler will you use?
Nice looking engine for sure! Looks hard to fit in the car with the intake manifold’s sticking out so wide??!! I guess I don’t understand why they couldn’t be designed to tuck inward more, but I’m no expert, I suppose there’s good reason.
I know it’s off subject but I was wondering if you had a suggestion for an original style muffler for my 72 super beetle. I saw “Frannie” put one on a 69 and she had to drill and ream and pry to get the one she had to fit! I was hoping there was a brand that fits best!
Sadly a lot of the new mufflers don’t fit very well. What I would do first is try the samba classifieds for an NOS muffler an old German one you might pay a little more but you will thank yourself.
A few things. 1, I have been very curious about this engine combo. I have acquired the parts to build essentially the same thing, and am really curious as to how it will perform. HEAVILY debating on putting it together, but I will need another set of rods for my 2110 build if I do. I purchased the same dual 40 IDF amazon carbs, and I messed around with them on my 1641. A little too much carb for that size, but once you learn how to mess with them(took me a couple afternoons) they run REALLY good, and the throttle response is stupid. I would stay away from single center mount if you can. 2. HOW IN THE HELL are you still editing videos with WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER!?!!?!?!? That is like the WORST video editor on the planet, I commend you for having the patience to even use that crap lol. May I suggest giving Divinci Resolve a try as it is also free but so much more powerful.

Hi Rodney, it’s a 110 cam so it’s nothing too crazy. I’m not looking to race or anything like that. I probably should’ve mentioned that in the video. Just to keep up with modern day traffic and climb hills much easier.

Keep those carbs. IDF’s or Dells are the only way to go.
I think those duals would work. But I learned dual kadrons or weber 40s work even better they are just a bugger to sync once synced power time.

Looking for solutions for too much crankcase pressure on 1776 with dual 40s empi breather kit build is 3yrs old but only 1500miles .
Those 40 idf's will make it scream.

100% better to go with the forged flywheel.
I've got 40 mm kadrons on 2020cc in Bella. I've been using them for years. Do what works for you!!

Thanks awesome video !!! motor looks awesome wish I could help you with the carbs but I don't know anything about them.

IDFs will not clear the side of the car to pull it straight back. Sorry even with our drag car, still needs to drop down.
that's a nice long block you getting for the beetle. that one will make a very nice noise.
maybe you could keep those no names for the KG? what type of muffler will you use?
I was thinking about a sidewinder but as I get older I might go with a quiet Pak muffler lol
Goals I might make that 1300 im rebuilding into a stroker
Nice looking engine for sure! Looks hard to fit in the car with the intake manifold’s sticking out so wide??!! I guess I don’t understand why they couldn’t be designed to tuck inward more, but I’m no expert, I suppose there’s good reason.
