GREAT advice. Thanks! I’m now looking for a grinder so I can make a decaf later in the day. Any recommendations? I bought a Cusinart and Marketplace and immediately realized you can’t skimp.
Great, easy to follow video. I have a Breville Express Pro and having some challenges dialing it in. I have the dose and tamp correct (I think) but tend to get more volume at 20-21 seconds (1:2.5 ratio). I have the grind at 5 and curious if that is "normal" to need to go that far down from the 1-30. When would I ever even need to go to 15 if I am down at a 3-5? Any recommendations are appreciated.
Sometimes I do have to go to the coarser side, especially depending on the roast. Sometimes if a coffee isn't tasting quite right at 18gram I will up it to 20grams and go a bit coarser. It really is all about how it tastes to YOU over the exact formula
You can also adjust the grind settings inside the bean hopper opening. The instructions are in the manual. Then you can use the grind dial in the higher range. I hope you understand what I’m talking about.
So we have the barista touch, not sure if the settings will greatly vary across models. I used to do a 13 grind but upon watching the video I tried a 6. The machine still POURS through the grind in less than 20 seconds. It looks smooth and dark for about 2 of those seconds, then just starts looking like light brown water. It’s so frustrating. This is a brand new one (we had the touch previously but had to purchase a new one…long story). What else could I be doing wrong? I just want a decent latte.
There is an internal adjustment ring as well. It sounds to me like that must be not properly set. (I had the same problem) Get all of you beans out of the hopper and grind out any of the little ones that might still be in there, then pop off the hopper and you'll see the internal burrs. You'll be able to pop those out and then set those to finer. It will help a great deal. I haven't uploaded a video on that, but I bet you can find one!
I can’t find anytime mentioning the grind dial on the front of the machine. Where should that be for espresso shots when your side grind setting is at 5?
The grind dial on the front is for setting a timed grind setting--so it will give you a roughly the same amount everytime you grind with it. Every coffee weighs a different amount, and every coffee behaves differently, so I usually go by weight rather than time. Sorry if that wasn't very helpful
Are you asking if the amount of coffee in the portafilter makes a difference on how fast it pulls and how it tastes? Absolutely. No Redundancy at all. It can go from very very bitter to very very sour. The perfect shot is neither.
@@odinallfather8241 I meant more the adjustment of the Grind Amount knob on the machine. I worked it out myself :) It doesn't really impact if you weight your beans.

I personally lean towards the Baratza Encore ESP or the Fellow Opus. It depends on how much you want to spend. Those are the two best budget grinders

@@ipnavil1 That makes perfect sense. Thanks!
What do you have your bean hopper opening grind settings at? Thanks :)

Does the Grind Amount on the machine really make an impact on this? Or is it pretty redundant?

You can set the time to a rough measurement and then check the weight in the portafilter after, as well!
My machine doesn't have a scale on the side.
I bought a cheap mini scale for weighing coffee and espresso. It really helps
@@TokyoCoffee Thanks for reply. I found the best bet for my espresso was gound coffee and bypassing the grinder.
