The Best Cheap Espresso Machine? The Delonghi ECP3630
Could this little espresso machine be the best inexpensive option for home baristas? It is a great option for beginners! In this video I investigate the Delonchi 15 Bar Espresso Machine, or the ECP 3630, and what makes this machine such a good deal. From getting good shots to steaming micro-foam, in this deep dive I go over it all.
By upgrading the portafilter and modifying the panarello steam wand you can do amazing things with this cheap espresso machine. In my experience I've found that this is a great way to get started in espresso and learn the basics. What is the best budget espresso machine? This one? It's a wonderful first machine!
Whoops! I point to the wrong side for the link!

What about the Oracle jet? Is it worth the price increase?
In my opinion, no. It offers a cold brew-ish feature and it has a more advanced tamping system than the Touch Impress, but I prefer the Touch Impress for dollar to results value
Really make sure the zip tie is tight! I had mine fly off it makes a big mess! Definitely use a zip tie if you want to do this!!
👆 Good advice!!

Much appreciated!
Thanks for the time! 🙏🏽👍🏽👋🏽 Greetings from México 🇲🇽
Thanks for watching!
If you add a cat in the background, you will hit 1k subs overnight. Interesting video. I would never have thought that the suiren would work that way.
Add cat. Check. Also, thank you!
This helped me a lot! Thanks 😊
That makes me so happy! Awesome!
I've been using one of these for around 4 years without any problems. It makes great espresso! I don't make latte so the milk wand is no problem in my case. Originally I was going to buy a more expensive machine but this performs so well I'm going to wait for it to break before I buy a better one.
I was surprised by its performance. It definitely deserves more attention
I don't even drink Espresso but this sure is entertaining to watch
Thanks so much!
Same.
@nicm5616 Thanks for watching!
Yeah this dude deserves more attention.
That's super nice of you to say!
Check Gabes if you have one in your area. You can get ECP variants for $50 and Dedica for $70 from time to time.
I don't think I have a Gabe's around here, but that sounds amazing!
Great quality video, deserve more attention.
That means a lot! I'm glad you liked it.
🎉
Woot!
Great video man! I’d love to see a side-by-side comparison vs a more standard espresso machine to understand what compromises you make with the budget pick.
Interesting idea! Maybe I should do that
Adding PID & pump dimmer mod brings this machine to whole other level
Yeah, I bet! Maybe that's something I'll try down the road
Thanks Friend 🫡
Thank you!
I have enough coffee toys to last me a lifetime yet it’s so beautiful and I want it anyway 😂 Someday, someday I want one!

Thank you so much! That means a lot!!
So we have the barista touch, not sure if the settings will greatly vary across models. I used to do a 13 grind but upon watching the video I tried a 6. The machine still POURS through the grind in less than 20 seconds. It looks smooth and dark for about 2 of those seconds, then just starts looking like light brown water. It’s so frustrating. This is a brand new one (we had the touch previously but had to purchase a new one…long story). What else could I be doing wrong? I just want a decent latte.
There is an internal adjustment ring as well. It sounds to me like that must be not properly set. (I had the same problem) Get all of you beans out of the hopper and grind out any of the little ones that might still be in there, then pop off the hopper and you'll see the internal burrs. You'll be able to pop those out and then set those to finer. It will help a great deal. I haven't uploaded a video on that, but I bet you can find one!
I need that! My sister keeps bringing tea bag coffee on camping trips.😂 something about saving on space and weight.
It's definitely an option. An Aeropress with a hand grinder that can fit inside is also handy!
Ahaha, stroking the hair 34 times *cut* wearing a beanie :D I feel this. Thanks for the nice test! subscribed.
I just cut my hair this week and can't tie it back anymore! I'm not used to it at all. Maybe I need to do shorter
I know this is an old video but I was in Japan for a couple weeks and the one I liked the most was a Boss Coffee Farm one from Brazil. It was alright and it had a fruity note. I'm gonna miss the konbinis for a lot of reasons.
I'm lucky enough to spend more time in Japan than most, and the Konbini never loses its appeal!
My thoughts are that the Suiren may impact the temperature of the water you are brewing with while it's in contact with the grounds - since there is little surface contact between the brewer and the filter, maybe there will be less heat being drawn from the cone into the holder. Since air is a better insulator than glass, maybe this helps keep the brew hot. You also don't need to pre-heat the holder.
Definitely a possibility! In the future I'll have to invest in accurate thermometers, etc. Thank you for watching and giving it thought!
You get the most flow through a filter when there's a transition between it touching a surface and it not touching a surface, because the origami has more of these transitions, it makes sense that there will be higher flow. It's a kind of inverse wicking effect and is reasonably well documented
Fascinating!
Lance Hendrick has a great video on the subject . Great review @@TokyoCoffee❤
Nice review. I too am sensitive to eating and drinking noises and your slurping was much less irritating than some other people i know (like Lance H. That mans slurps nearly make me gag theyre so gross and he gives no warning 😅)
Haha, I'll always try to give warning going forward (and maybe I'll lower the clip volume)
so the v60 has some of the water go through the side and intro the cone holder. I imagine with no cone, there is less of a path for the water to bypass the coffee on the side and is why it's a slower brew.
Interesting theory! I'll have to see if there's a way to investigate
Great video! Really enjoyed it😃 thought you were just another proffesional big coffee youtuber, so when you said you wanted 1000 subs i looked over - cause I was listening while working - and I got really suprised your channel wasnt bigger. Ive just bought a ceramic v60, so it was quite interesting to see the new take on v60. Keep it up!
Thanks for the comment! I'm a coffee professional, but not a professional TH-camr, lol
hello
Hello!
Hey! What grind size is ur grinder set to? I have the same setup and I have some trouble with this machine when I grind it too finely. I’m right under 5
A lot depends on the coffee, but I use about 16g of coffee ground around 3.2, Do you have a standard basket or pressurized?
I have one like yours! I think a pressurized one came with the machine but I bought an open bottom one separately. I’ve tried it around 1-2 and nothing comes out, I try to extract my shot anywhere from 24-30 seconds and i use 17g of coffee ! And I measure my shot too so I try to finish with double what my grounds were so around 34 grams of espresso
Sounds like you are doing everything right! All that matters is that it tastes good to you!
Have you noticed the paint peeling off the drip tray? I have the black unit. Had I known this would happen I wouldn’t have purchased the black unit. beg to differ as this is 💯 a manufacturer defect in their product. First time I contacted Breville they agreed, with great hesitation, to send me a new drip tray and said it was a one time thing because it’s not a warranty issue. They also said I should be using the drip tray guard, which according to her, it was included in box with my purchase…nope, not correct it wasn’t, also absolutely no mention of it anywhere. I didn’t even know what she was referring to. It was a a sealed box. No evidence of prior opening. Then she told me someone at the big box store (Best Buy) I purchased it from must have opened the box and took it out. It was a weird conversation. She said she couldn’t send to me, but I could buy it online. She agreed to send me a replacement drip tray out of curiosity. I called back and explained what previous agent told me and I was also sent the drip tray guard, since the first agent advised this would solve all my issues to protect my drip tray from peeling paint. The paint peeling issue started weeks after first buying this machine. After I received the replacement drip tray, and regardless of treating the drip tray even more gently, the paint started peeling off again! I’m not impressed. A few months go by I inspect the areas of missing paint and noticed the worst areas are where the guard sits. I called Breville again only to be told the same nonsense of how it’s not part of the warranty. I requested to speak with a supervisor. I sent in all the photos. They agreed to send me another drip tray, one last time. I haven’t received a new one yet. How is this not a warranty issue? A $1500 machine that pain peels off in only a couple weeks to a couple months of owning it? Clearly it’s poorly engineered aesthetics not to withstand gentle cleaning with a soft cloth!
Other than the peeling paint, we do for the most part enjoy our machine. There was an issue with the temperature not reaching to 170. It has resolved on its own after months. We previously owned a Breville espresso Cappuccino machine that lasted over 10 years and loved it. Hence why we purchased another from Breville . Hopefully this machine will last just as long or longer. But the peeling paint it does not look pretty. Happy espresso, making
I never had that issue... Are you putting it in the dishwasher?
Can you still do manual frothing with this machine or is it all automatic?
You can still steam manually, but the steam wand has a set steaming position for manual steaming. It isn't on a ball joint like other models.
What about for a La Marzaco Micro.. espresso seems weak and we’re go between 2-3 but it seems too fine for if we went to four that seems too course …
Are you weighing out your dose?
@kenyastabler The Opus is a relatively low end grinder in the world of espresso, and your espresso machine is a high end model. You may have a bad match on your hands, unfortunately. You see, a grinder is just as important to your espresso quality as the machine, if not more so
Hello! Thanks 4 the video, i was Looking for some vídeos to dial in my Fellow Opus, because i don’t know what’s wrong in my case. Let me explain, when i grind i can’t get lower than number 5 in my grinder, although I’m using good quality fresh beans. The ones I’ve got now are roasted the 28th of August and 85SCA. (I’ve used differents coffees all fresh and over 85SCA. My coffee machine is a sage bambino and I use a bottomless ikape portafilter with the básquet that came with the portafilter. I use a 20gr dose because I like a larger espresso. My complains are that first of all I can’t go finer than 5 and I think I don’t get enough crema in those settings. After it takes ages to grind 20gr. I have to press many times the button, (recently discovered that a long press is for manual stop) 😅. My grinder has a lot of retention. I’ve cleaned all parts several times and see if it was all ok with the grinder and it seems all parts are in good conditions. Long story short, under the lid of the grinder it says that the range for espresso is between 1 and 3 but I can’t grind under 5, and it takes for ever to grind and I can’t get enough crema. Hope you can give me some hints!! Thank you!!!!
Hey! All of that sounds a little off. Perhaps your grinder wasn't calibrated properly? I would contact Fellow for a replacement in that case. Question: Are you making the adjustments while there are beans in the hopper? If so you should always make adjustments when the hopper is empty AND when adjusting finer always run the grinder.
@@TokyoCoffee thanks for your answer, I’ve done watch you said and contacted with fellow directly.
Fellow sais the problem its the outer burrs. They send me a replacement for free. But im a bit annoyed with the grinder. let's see if my mood changes with the new burrs. but im thinking to switch to a MiiCoffee DF54. What do you think?
A lot of people love that grinder. I've never tested it
I’ve returned The Fellow Opus, had enough with it. I all read brought a DF54. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 hope that the DF54 don’t give me so many problems.
My machine doesn't have a scale on the side.
I bought a cheap mini scale for weighing coffee and espresso. It really helps
@@TokyoCoffee Thanks for reply. I found the best bet for my espresso was gound coffee and bypassing the grinder.
Eric! Love the content. Jake - Mateo and Jude’s dad
Well, this is embarrassing! But thank you for that!
@@TokyoCoffee not at all! I was in Tokyo last week and went to KOFFEE MAMEYA. Mind was blown
I can’t find anytime mentioning the grind dial on the front of the machine. Where should that be for espresso shots when your side grind setting is at 5?
The grind dial on the front is for setting a timed grind setting--so it will give you a roughly the same amount everytime you grind with it. Every coffee weighs a different amount, and every coffee behaves differently, so I usually go by weight rather than time. Sorry if that wasn't very helpful
Brilliant my friend. You just summed up and justified my hobby, and why it's my passion, to me! Very underrated video for the effort and on point explanation. Definitely sharing it out to the world. Good luck bro
Thanks for that! So kind!
Would you say the barista pro is the best overall for home users? Not a coffee geek but also don’t care about the automation as much.
Absolutely! If you are open to learning the basics it is my favorite all-in-one
@@TokyoCoffee I really, REALLY appreciate your work, man! THANK YOU!
Thank you! I don't do a ton of videos--more of a hobby than anything else--but I really appreciate the feedback!
@@TokyoCoffee Any "brain dead" obvious lessons or tips in context of people new to it? I assume dialing in the shot is something you need to do each time for the amount of grind and pour. If you have a "beginner" tip video, let me know! =)
Love this machine! Great coffee, but impossible to do latte art. The viscosity difference between espresso shot and microfoam seems to be the issue.
I've been able to get some decent latte art quality milk. It's all in the technique. Check out Lance Hedrick's video on milk streaming. Are you using freshly roasted beans?
th-cam.com/video/gTC3dJvwgUI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=o__oAhXB4HUIwRkt
Does the Grind Amount on the machine really make an impact on this? Or is it pretty redundant?
Are you asking if the amount of coffee in the portafilter makes a difference on how fast it pulls and how it tastes? Absolutely. No Redundancy at all. It can go from very very bitter to very very sour. The perfect shot is neither.
@@odinallfather8241 I meant more the adjustment of the Grind Amount knob on the machine. I worked it out myself :) It doesn't really impact if you weight your beans.
You can set the time to a rough measurement and then check the weight in the portafilter after, as well!
Can you make a video on the Barista Touch Impress you briefly mentioned it in your video but I could not find any reviews from you on this higher end model, thank you. I am looking to buy the Touch Impress as it has even more features to ensure a perfect shot every time!
I hope to, but it won't be for a while.
GREAT advice. Thanks! I’m now looking for a grinder so I can make a decaf later in the day. Any recommendations? I bought a Cusinart and Marketplace and immediately realized you can’t skimp.
I personally lean towards the Baratza Encore ESP or the Fellow Opus. It depends on how much you want to spend. Those are the two best budget grinders
Great, easy to follow video. I have a Breville Express Pro and having some challenges dialing it in. I have the dose and tamp correct (I think) but tend to get more volume at 20-21 seconds (1:2.5 ratio). I have the grind at 5 and curious if that is "normal" to need to go that far down from the 1-30. When would I ever even need to go to 15 if I am down at a 3-5? Any recommendations are appreciated.
Sometimes I do have to go to the coarser side, especially depending on the roast. Sometimes if a coffee isn't tasting quite right at 18gram I will up it to 20grams and go a bit coarser. It really is all about how it tastes to YOU over the exact formula
You can also adjust the grind settings inside the bean hopper opening. The instructions are in the manual. Then you can use the grind dial in the higher range. I hope you understand what I’m talking about.
@@ipnavil1 That makes perfect sense. Thanks!
What do you have your bean hopper opening grind settings at? Thanks :)
Finding coffee houses with character, historic interest and of course, great coffee, is one of my favourite things to do in Japan. I love the Showa kitsch, the beautiful 'machiya style' traditional kissatens and the ultra chic minimalist design-led places-- I try to find everything hidden! Nobody talks about the psychedelic kitsch cafe upstairs in Nakano Broadway and I wonder why? I doubt the interiors are authentically kitsch, I think they're of our era but trying to do some kind of wild 'alternative universe' version of the 1970s. Really fun though, and nice and quiet. So many of my favourite cafes I'd like to stay lesser known, lest they become overrun by obnoxious trend-happy folks addicted to instagram. I want to scream about them to everybody who has the same interests as me because I've found some real gems but I'm not sure that unleashing my list with enthusiasm would be wise, it's a catch 22; I want everybody to enjoy my recommendations and appreciate and support them yet I don't want the character and atmosphere to be compromised by a mass descent of loud tourists. I'm sure you often face the same conundrum. Lastly, people who excitedly go to Starbucks as a priority when in Tokyo are wince inducing. Of all the cool indie cafes to visit, they go to a generic mega corporate offering instead. Soon as I see someone in a travel vlog do that, I switch off. We're just not going to connect and they certainly have nothing to offer me in terms of aesthetics and travel itinerary inspiration. Please keep posting videos dude, much appreciated. ☕☺
Thank you for your awesome comment! A lot to consider in your words, that's for sure. I will have to search out some of these hidden gems on my next trip!
@@TokyoCoffee Oh I hope you find some really ultra-niche cafes, teahouses and kissatens this winter and in 2024 and enjoy them as much as I do-- even if you can't bring yourself to advertise these hidden places of aesthetic magic here online. I totally get it. Like Sepia in Shibamata or R-Za Dokushokan in Koenji or the sadly closed now 'Mugimaru 2' (photos are still up online, fantastic!)-- girls overlook these richly atmospheric, characterful themed masterpieces in favour of taking photos of their soulless corporate drink in a crummy overcrowded Starbucks in the tourist drag. I do not understand these women at all but good luck to 'em. I'm quietly relieved they stay away from the places I adore. Keep uploading, I'll keep watching! Enthusiasm is contagious.☺😎☕🍰📚🎥
Thank you!
Been asking around since like 25th of sep if i should by the breville barista express, no seems to care lol. The sale is only active until today 1st Oct. Hopeful that you will give me an answer since the upload is new. Where I'm from the breville barista express is on sale for 540 USD, is this a good price? Is it maybe even considered to be a must buy or do you think I can get a better price further down the road, like Xmas and so forth. Thank :)
It will never get cheaper than that! Yes, that's a great deal!
@@TokyoCoffee thank you!
That's what I'm here for!
The Bambino heats up in only 3 seconds (i think). So why does Breville's more expensive machine take 10x longer?
The Bambino is an insane value! They used their best heating tech, the Thermojet, and essentially removed all the extras. It is very small and very plastic .... But it pulls great shots! For all-in-one machines out of Breville the Express is actually the cheapest. The Pro and Touch both heat up in 3 seconds. I hope to make videos on all of these models soon.
@TokyoCoffee I bought a Bambino 3 months ago (first espresso machine) and can't imagine life without it now. My girlfriend has this Barista Express and I always wondered why hers was so slow compared to my cheaper machine. Thanks for the response. Great review 👍
The Bambino is such a great deal. Truly high end internals in a simple package. I'm glad you love it!
nice review man!
Thank you! I really appreciate you checking it out 😃
wow
Thanks for watching!
