I was working in radio at the time this song was released. It was a huge deal. One of the things that has been largely forgotten since the release of this record is that every radio station in America -- regardless of format -- stopped and played this song at the same time. The record was embargoed from airplay, and when it popped, you could go up and down your radio dial and virtually every single station was playing it, all at once. What a debut! And then right about that same time, there was the "Hands Across America," where people from coast-to-coast stood in a long line, holding hands, to form a continuous chain of humanity from the Atlantic to the Pacific. A friend of mine and I were playing golf that day, and we broke our round short to go stand in that line on Highway 80 West in Arlington, Texas (in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex) just to say we were part of it. Those were pretty amazing times.
Weren't they though? It actually meant something then to be part of something that was in unity and love, instead now, we have so much unity in hate. If you try to even attempt to spread some love, you are labeled in a negative way. It's getting rough out there. For all those who still believe in humanity, stay strong. This was straight magic, all egos were checked at the door and they sang for a good cause. There were many big names that didn't get a solo and had no problem being in the background such as Harry Belafonte, Smokey Robinson, Lindsey Buckingham, Better Midler, June Pointer (the Pointer sisters) and more. It still brings tears to my eyes, its too bad, we as a nation do not have this unity right now.
To add a bit; The USA project was initiated by Harry Belafonte. He & Ken Kragen (talent manager, activist & fundraiser) were in charge. They chose Quincy to direct & produce, chose MJ & Lionel to write it, obtained the talent, facilities, etc. Harry definitely could have had a solo, but I imagine he wanted to showcase the popular artists of the day, to raise the most money.
So many legends, from so many different genres. You had rock, folk, R&B/Motown, country, pop... And some of the greatest and most unique voices in the industry all blending together yet retaining their individual sound and style.
It'd be tough to replicate this today. There was an attempt in '94 for Haiti, but it didn't feel the same; didn't feel unified. The sign on the way in said "Leave Your Egos At The Door"; no one tried to outshine eachother, they just tried to do the song & service justice. Also, Quincy Jones is the MVP, here. His arrangement of solos, duets, and harmonies are what make this so incredible.

I watched this live on TV. We taped it on our VCR and I watched it over and over again. I was about 7 or 8. I'm white and grew up in a mostly white suburb and was obsessed with Michael Jackson. I was rasied to not judge people based on race, sex or sexual orientation and that we were all equal. This was the message I was taught... Better times.

The magic of this song is the different genres that came together - Country, western, soul, pop, R&B, mowtown, folk, etc. That is why is was more appealing to everyone. The heavy metal guys were pissed they werent invited. You can do an all R&B, or all country (like Band Aid) and it will never be as successful as this. There is a song "American Pie" - (The day the music died) about a plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens in 1959. It occurred to me - that if a plane had crashed into the studio where they were recording - it would have taken about 50 huge stars away from us. That would have truly been the day the music died.

This was straight magic, all egos were checked at the door and they sang for a good cause. There were many big names that didn't get a solo and had no problem being in the background such as Harry Belafonte, Smokey Robinson, Lindsey Buckingham, Better Midler, June Pointer (the Pointer sisters) and more. It still brings tears to my eyes, its too bad, we as a nation do not have this unity right now.
To add a bit; The USA project was initiated by Harry Belafonte. He & Ken Kragen (talent manager, activist & fundraiser) were in charge. They chose Quincy to direct & produce, chose MJ & Lionel to write it, obtained the talent, facilities, etc. Harry definitely could have had a solo, but I imagine he wanted to showcase the popular artists of the day, to raise the most money.

It'd be tough to replicate this today. There was an attempt in '94 for Haiti, but it didn't feel the same; didn't feel unified. The sign on the way in said "Leave Your Egos At The Door"; no one tried to outshine eachother, they just tried to do the song & service justice. Also, Quincy Jones is the MVP, here. His arrangement of solos, duets, and harmonies are what make this so incredible.

I watched this live on TV. We taped it on our VCR and I watched it over and over again. I was about 7 or 8. I'm white and grew up in a mostly white suburb and was obsessed with Michael Jackson. I was rasied to not judge people based on race, sex or sexual orientation and that we were all equal. This was the message I was taught... Better times.
I remember when this came out. I thought it was the greatest thing I'd heard.
A few dozen of the most talented singers on the planet combining their gifts to help some people who really needed it at the time. It should happen more often.
No!!! It shouldn't ever have to happen again! People in Africa were dying for reasons that shouldn't be a part of this world! It undoubtedly will always be happening somewhere. But, for you to wish it to happen, is disgraceful.

My favourite parts are Springsteen and Wonder duetting together and James Ingram’s last chorus. The part were he says “so let’s start giving” always gives me chills.
I was born in 1979 and our whole class sang this at one time,,,,, I was Cindy Lauper, white chic with the loud voice, and there was no bias................ the world is going crazy but this brings me back to when I was young and life was simple.... not from famine but everybody hating while people.

Look up the reason for this song. It was a time that we in america just found out that children were starving in Africa.. we didnt know.. All the proceeds were sent to help the starving children. It raised about 75 million.. back in 1985

The magic of this song is the different genres that came together - Country, western, soul, pop, R&B, mowtown, folk, etc. That is why is was more appealing to everyone. The heavy metal guys were pissed they werent invited. You can do an all R&B, or all country (like Band Aid) and it will never be as successful as this. I mean, they have Cyndi Lauper and Bob Dylan in the same room for crying out loud!

Almost all of these featured Artists were iconic in their day..please check out Bruce Springsteen, (the one that came in hard), Steve Perry from Journey, and Hall and Oates (Blue eyed soul). They have so many good ass songs. You'll appreciate this way more after you do.
Thing most people don't know is that the artists were asked to join in at an award show so this was started around 1am and didn't finish till after 6am. No one was paid, they volunteered their time. Unfortunately half of the artists here have passed away.

There is a song "American Pie" - (The day the music died) about a plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens in 1959.
It occurred to me - that if a plane had crashed into the studio where they were recording - it would have taken about 50 huge stars away from us. That would have truly been the day the music died.

You should check out the first charity record for Ethiopia from 1984. 'Feed The World' (let them know it's Christmas) by a group of British artists who joined forces as 'Band Aid'. The 'Live Aid' world wide transmitted, simultaneous concerts in Wembly Stadium England and the JFK stadium in Philly followed a year later in 85. Queen stole the show!
