      @Shinobi 272 Lucky. I'm the most prepper-ish of my family, and I'm too poor to do much of anything. My immediate family is willing to do a little bit of planning and preparing because we're all cautious by nature, but not NEARLY enough, and none of my friends are. So in the unlikely event I did survive, I'd lose all or most of my friends, I might not be able to keep my family alive, and because I have health issues my medium or long-term survival is likely not happening. And of course I live only a couple of miles from the most likely target in my area, because why would I have good luck?

It did rain when the cloud came overhead a couple days later🙁 My parents kept us inside til we moved back to the states in the Fall, so no playing in my sandbox that summer! Its crazy to think that I have been through a Nuclear fallout!!!

    Say one is at home and got a warning that there was 20 minutes until being hit, that's not enough time to get plastic on all your windows in the house plus put plastic on the outside pipes for the furnace and to get things taken to your basement...clothes, important papers, and medical supplies. Seems to me maybe planning ahead might be good...cutting plastic for windows and for floor vents.

    Pro tips: Fill your bath tubs with water when hostilities appear imminent. Your hot water heater also holds 30-50 gallons of water. Make your safe room a central room in your house without windows. Even if it's a closet. Have window sealing kits like you use for winter, to reseal your windows after a blast, or even if your windows don't break, to keep as much fall out as possible. TURN OFF YOUR HVAC system! Make sure you place physical barriers in front of any crawlspace vents or openings as well.
    To shield vs beta radiation you need 1cm of plastic or 1" of solid paper/wood/cardboard, which is very doable.
    Gamma is the really horrific threat. To get a high level of protection vs gamma you need 2 FEET of concrete, 6 FEET of water, or 3 FEET of sand bagged earth. However, 1/10th of that amount will provide a "halving" protection. The more times you can halve the gamma, the better for you and your family. Find the US department of energy fall out map for your area, and see how many Sieverts/Rads of fallout per hour is expected in your area, then start adding halving layers until you get the number well into single digits.
    For instance: If you are in a 100rad/hr zone. You want at least 4 halvings. 100/2= 50, 50/2=25, 25/2=12.5, 12.5/2= 6.75
    When we are talking radiation, a dose of 200 rds is generally the low end of a fatal dose, and once you get to 500 it is certain death. Remember, it is cumulative. Also keep in mind the radiation levels from gamma are predicted to die off very quickly.
    DO NOT FORGET to shield above you too. Fallout will land on your roof and emits rays in a 360x360 sphere.
    if you have a basement, things become much much easier, but you still need to take extensive shielding precautions to stop Gamma.
    90% of those who do not die from the blasts will die from gamma ray induced radiation sickness.

    From ScieceDirect,
    "Fallout particles vary in size from 1 μm (1 × 10− 6 m) to several millimeters.
    Many fallout particles are particularly hazardous as they contain radioactive elements such as:
    137Cs (cesium-137), a gamma emitter with half-life of 30.2 years, which distributes fairly uniformly throughout the body as it behaves similarly to potassium. It can contribute to gonadal irradiation and genetic damage. [This emitter has the highest penitration capability.)
    90Sr (strontium 90), a beta emitter with half-life of 28.6 years, which accumulates in growing bones as it is chemically similar to calcium. It can cause tumors, leukemia, and other blood abnormalities.
    131I (iodine-131), a beta emitter with half-life of 8.0 days, which concentrates in the thyroid gland. It can destroy all or part of the thyroid or can induce chromosomal damage leading to carcinogenesis.
    3H (tritium), a beta emitter with half-life of 12.3 years. It is dangerous as it can replace hydrogen in the water molecules. It can cause lung cancer.
    239Pu (plutonium-239), an alpha emitter with a half-life of 24,400 years. Its ingestion can cause the formation of bone and lung tumors."

    you can use your canned food for shielding around your safe room. remember to shield above you. Ammunition is also a great shielding. Especially shotgun shells, which tend to be thick boxes with a very high amount of lead in them. Non lead ammo will not be as good a shielding, but copper and brass is still better than wood or plastic.
    NASA also recently tested kevlar shielding on the ISS, and apparently it's pretty good. So is PE. So keep your armor on if you have it.

  • @Followme556

    ON warning time: if tactical nukes start getting used in Europe, you might have several hours warning before it escalates into a full scale nuclear event. Or you might not.
    Really your warning is NOW. There is enough deeply disturbing escalation right now to warrant preparing a safe room and making some pre-emptive purchases.

    I looked at the activated charcoal CBNR suits but decided on something different as the charcoal lining will expire over time. I went with a MIRA SAFETY CBRN SUIT which if stored appropriately will last indefinitely. A full face mask rated for CBRN is required, as well as a filter cartridge rated for CBRN events, and have several filters, an average filter will last around 8 hours, a specialized filter up to 20 hours. Great video, I highly recommend the orange U.S. Armed forces book as well as the green one you referenced as I have both and they are great resources with lots of life saving information.

    Weird thought: A lot of the radiation from fallout is from the fallout accumulated on the roof and that is especially the case if you're in the underground basement of a house. If it's only fallout dust on the roof why not setup a cheap sprinkler system on the roof of a house in case of nuclear fallout. Right before going into the house or before fallout begins to fall it can be turned on and rinse off the roof of the house over time as the fallout attempts to accumulate on the roof. The sprinkler system could keep the roof mostly clear of fallout dust as the radioactive decay occurs. Even if the power goes out you may still have water pressure if being supplied by an intact local water tower.

    • @lisawillis699
      @lisawillis699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The power grid would be down as a result. So unfortunately that wouldn't be an option.

    • @zzR960
      @zzR960 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisawillis699 you never heard of generators lol but the actuall issue is that radiation will get into the water then your just spraying radiation water on to your house to rinse off radiation dust 🤣🤣

    • @Elzon1
      @Elzon1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lisawillis699 Actually, it's all water pressure based. Most towns and cities have a central water tower that both stores a large amount of water as well as maintains the water pressure throughout the area's water system. Even in the event of a sustained electrical power outage water pressure will be maintained for quite some time afterwards. Even if an EMP wipes out the mains electrical system you'll still have water pressure for a least a day or more. So, a normal pressure-based sprinkler system could help reduce fallout collection on a house/building's roof for a day or two. This could help with reducing radiation exposure of the occupants. Just a thought.

    • @Elzon1
      @Elzon1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zzR960 The only thing that would be radioactive are the radioactive particles themselves. Water passing thorough a pipe in a radioactive area will not become radioactive itself as the water doesn't contain radioactive particles. If an EMP knocks out electrical power to the water treatment plant then it won't pump any radioactive particles into the water tower and therefore avoiding any radioactive particles being in the water supply. Even if there wasn't an EMP strong enough in your area the water treatment plant would soon cease to function due to the workers most likely vacating the area after some time. Also, municipal water management systems may have a plan in place to prevent radioactive fallout from getting into the water supply.

    Most scenarios of nuclear war in the media depict nuclear attacks occurring during the day when people are awake and can heed warnings and take some precautions...but what is to stop an attack occurring on a Wednesday at 12am PST, 3am EST, most everyone is asleep?
    Now that is a "cold shot", completely unfair, that day of week and time of day would maximize casualties.
    Combined with an EMP blast before the main attack, even if people left their cellphones on they would be disabled. People would get no warning...some would wake up to fallout, electronics don't work,... that's how it might go down.

    A nuclear war is much, much more survivable than it was back in the 80s, do to strategic arms limitation treaties. The number of deployed nukes now absolutely pales in comparison to the numbers from the 80s and early 90s.

    Modern AC do not bring in air from the outside. The air intake is were you replace your filter monthly. The system is closed. Some system have this unit inside the house, attic or garage. The outside unit that has the fan is for circulating the closed system Freon to the inside unit, not the air. This being the case do we still need to turn it off?

    ALSO, to the guy who asked about being safe south of La, i am from San diego originally, and honestly that has a higher chance of being hit over even LA because it has the largest Navy base and Marine corps base there and military targets would be priority over larger civilian cities because our military and especially navy will be whats launching missiles back in retaliation.
    And if your south of La but North of San diego, orange county is not that far from Camp Pendleton in Oceanside.
    Not to mention wildfires all over that dry state that would make the massive ones in 2019/2020 seem like bonfires and those wildfires will also kick up smoke and more radioactive dust too.

      Rerun your map using a one megaton explosion, both air and ground burst. That would be a worse case scenario. No one has a missile-launchable 50-megaton warhead. However, Adolf Putin claims to have a one hundred megaton torpedo, which would create an extreme risk to U.S. coastal cites. China, on the other hand, has a five magaton warhead. They have 50 of those, and I suspect they will phase them out. I don't worry about China; Russia is the problem.

Theres a lot of doom and gloom out there but its more like 20-30% of vehicles that would be inoperable. There are also whole home emp shield products that can shield any appliance plugged into your home. The vidoes from emp shield were super informative for me. They explained away a lot of myths and explained the realities of an emp.

    For those asking: "What do you think is the average time you'd have to prepare if a missle was launched, before impact?" Well if it is a Hypersonic missile, then probably no time because they are so fast by the time you get a public warning it will be just about here. If an older more conventional missile then approximately 30 minutes (like from Russia)

    So to answer the question about the mask, anything is better than nothing, a n95 or a couple layers of cloth over your face is better than nothing, a very huge part of getting radiation poisoning is the radioactive dust getting in your body through either inhalation or ingestion. The dust on your skim is relatively harmless, it would burn you, but wouldn't kill you

      Because the odds of only one ever being used with no nuclear retaliation is simply not a possibility, the odds of every person who watched this video to win the lottery would be a much higher likelyhood.
      No nation that has detected a nuclear weapon launched is going to assume they arent the target and then just sit back, no until they know they arent the target, they wull assume they are and launch there weapons at whatever launched them, and then each nations allies would throw theres in as well.
      Even if only 2 countries only launched 1% of there weapons, it would only take a few of them to slowly make the planet largely inhabitable.
      Yea one or two, most of the world would be ok, i mean only two where used in WW2, but that was only because no one else had them, though Germany was very close to having one themselves.

    Thank you for addressing this issue. God Bless the both of you. I have been concerned for some time.
    My questions: my husband is highly allergic to iodine. He found out the hard way. He went to the hospital for a test and had to have a dye injection containing iodine. The doctor told him he was lucky he was in a hospital when this happened. Is iodide the same as iodine?
    I also have an iodide water filter to remove radiation from drinking water. I would be concern to have him drink from that too. Does Iodide get into the water or is it contained in the filter?
    I did purchase from Amazon Thyroid Shield light weight radiation 0.5mm lead equivlancy for him. Do activated charchol tablets help?

    • @firepigeons

  • @chesslover8829

    From Wikipedia,
    "The largest, and therefore the most radioactive particles, are deposited by fallout in the first few hours after the blast. Smaller particles are carried to higher altitudes and descend more slowly, reaching ground in a less radioactive state as the isotopes with the shortest half-lives decay the fastest. The smallest particles can reach the stratosphere and stay there for weeks, months, or even years, and cover an entire hemisphere of the planet via atmospheric currents. The higher danger, short-term, localized fallout is deposited primarily downwind from the blast site, in a cigar-shaped area, assuming a wind of constant strength and direction. Crosswinds, changes in wind direction, and precipitation are factors that can greatly alter the fallout pattern."
