  • This is part 2 of the saga Black Jack and I have gone through since I purchased him a couple months ago...In this video, Black Jack and I deal with his lameness and colic. Things are definitely not going our way. Will I ever get to ride my new horse?

    I'm following you because I'm also a beginner who nearly purchased a horse decided, despite having an excellent support system, that I really don't think I have enough knowledge to deal with the myriad of issues that can and often arise when purchasing and caring for a horse. I just called off the search and was kinda sad but this helps affirm that it was the right call. You're a good person and BJ is so lucky to have you! I'm also so frustrated that your support persons failed you, and i hope you continue to build a reliable team. I really hope BJ improves quickly and you can begin to enjoy your horse into the future!💞

      I'm glad my saga at least confirmed your decision! I'm the kind of person who learns by doing, so the mistakes suck, but I'm learning a ton. Biggest lesson was trusting the wrong person.

    This is why a PPE is so critical. If your horse has pads on...find out why. If you have a black horse in Tx, Ok, AZ keep him in during summer days and out at night. Pre purchase exams are so very important. Especially for caring, novice owners.

    • @HorseTaleswithBlackJack
      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@thedesken Agreed. I had a PPE, but we didn’t pull the shoes on the front. I talked with the farrier before purchasing, but I should have asked the owner. My mistake, but I didn’t really know what I was doing.

      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack hey, you're doing it now. That's a huge plus and you're on the right track. I'm surprised your vet and farrier didn't take this more seriously. But you're taking it seriously. I look forward to watching your progress with him. Awesome future for you both.

    Because you’re being a responsible human being for your horse, I’ve subscribed. I believe the previous barn folks took advantage of your “rookie status” and only cared about unloading him. Glad that you changed barns. Sending positive vibes to you and your horse.

    You're such a caring, loving, NEW horse owner! GEEZ! You have been through so much with your new beautiful horse, Black Jack!!! I feel so bad for you that anything that could go wrong can go wrong 😢 as a horse owner/trainer, I would be bedside myself for everything you have been going through. I pray that things can only get better from here. I love the fact that you are always ten steps ahead and understand what it is for caring for a horse. It is a huge commitment and responsibility, and not cheap! but it does seem you are being hit with all of this right away! I am looking forward to seeing you ride Black Jack on trail rides and wonderful riding lessons to further your knowledge of happy horse ownership. God bless...❤...😊

    Did the vet discuss the possibility of founder? Some horses cannot be out on grass at all, some cannot be on it in midday when the sugar content is highest. Did he do x-rays? Anytime a horse has pads on, it indicates a problem.
    Also, some horses eat sand…and he may need to be given a sand-reducing supplement. I think it’s psyllium or something similar-really works well to grab the sand and move it out of their gut. The way you can verify if this is an issue is to put his feces in a bucket and dissolve them in water after treatment, dump out the liquid and the sand will be left behind.

      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! That's very interesting! Thankfully, he hasn't foundered (or at least not since I've had him). He does have an old injury though that we're treating. I still have no clue about the pads, unless his previous owner simply assumed he was tender footed, rather than having the full lameness workup that I had done.

      I agree! What's even crazier is that after taking him to a lameness expert, we've found out that Black Jack not only isn't tenderfooted, he has an old injury to his flexor tendon, and that's why he's lame. I'm detailing that in an upcoming part of his saga...

    One of mine started needing some Special shooing techniques after about 18 or 19. But I was able to stay roping on him till he was 20. Possible mild founder, old age, & navicular. He coliced on me once and I walked him from 5p.m. until 3:30 in the morning, till he finally passed the blockage. Had to put him down at 34 years of age and still miss him every day.
    I also lost one to colic. That was a bad day.

    Number one vets closing so they had to wait until another vet that's ridiculous there is always an on-call vet that they call right away I don't know what your vet was thinking two when they came out to look at his feet and if they were claiming that it was Stone bruising first thing they should have done was taking X-rays of the of the ankles and the feet.

    • @HorseTaleswithBlackJack
      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Agreed. Problem is, I trusted the vet. I’m an instructional designer, not a vet, so I thought all was being handled well. I’ve become much more “annoying” now when dealing with everyone related to my horse, questioning everything. I’d rather annoy people than have Black Jack suffer.

      You need a solid support system. The water in his paddock was gross. Horses need fresh water every single day. My horse will not drink slightly dirty water. Find a more responsible caring barn. Also find a super farrier and maybe a vet that specializes in lameness. Good on you for moving. Get a good strong support system. It sounds like you are moving in the right direction. Do as much reading on horsemanship as possible good luck with everything!
