My theory behind selecting ranks: Bronze: No build order, no timings, trying to figure things out. Silver: Has a build order for the first 3 minutes they can't follow, but is trying. Has no Micro. Gold: Has a build order they can follow, but poor mid-game, bad army comps and untidy Micro. Platinum: Have 1 thing they are good at, one of build order, micro, Army comps or Macro. Everything else it not good (this is my rank). Diamond: Good at most things, but not exceptional at anything OR Exceptional at one thing but not good at anything else. Masters: Is Good at all the things, exceptional at one thing. GM: Is Good at all things, and exceptional at multiple things. Using this formula....I'm very rarely right
Dude I've been master league ever since it existed and I usually don't really have a specific build order or timings and I just figure things out. Resource float, multitasking, APM, micro are all far more important. You can't even tell timings from a fractured game because you don't know what delays may have occurred. So that's probably your problem. Granted, this is difficult, as even Harstem and Lowko get significantly off regularly.
my high is masters 1 and i never learned a fucking buildorder in my life xD i just build "some of these, some of these, oh these look nice, well lets push here and there lets try this" i have NO FUCKING CLUE what i am doing xD people totaly overthink what a master / dia whatever has to do xD if u can spend ur money and have relativly decent micro and know what fight to take and what fight not to take, while also trying to harras, it really doesnt matter much what you build you will end in masters xD
In game 1, the blue Zerg made spines in the natural in order to lure out drones vs the banelings. The banelings were hidden until the drones got to the natural, which is why red just split the drones and let them stand still.
In 2nd round i quite see my TvT. Things that sell it out: really late bunker on high ground (if it was reactor reapers guy could be dead), really vulnerable starport at low ground which you want to defend (i prefer wall, but at least tank in this case could save him whole trouble of this attack which did nothing) and in the same moment other guy could freely do double drop in mineral lines on natural/main instead of A clicking starport. And my biggest nemesis is F2 whole army which was seen a lot. That can guarantee a lot of mess since no turrets (you cant really afford it) when any drop comes in. Edit: P.S. On second thought biggest nemesis is A click tosses and random TvP in particular but that's another story.
Same thing for me, my TvP and TvZ have a decent win rate of 65%+ but my TvT is absolutely terrible since judging a good fight is the hardest thing in that matchup due to how finicky siege tanks can turn the tables in a fight. Even worse when you are playing bio vs mech which feels like you get a instant death sentence when their siege tanks just siege up in your natural and you lose all your bio in a instant. Literally the only way I win TvT's is just survive until you get 10 ravens and you can just disable all of your enemies tanks and insta win. -hardstuck D3 Terran with 260 APM
@@awooawoo9628 tanks before 2x attack upgrade dont even 1 shot marine. If you getting catch off guard with bio vs mech its luck of sensor towers or scout. Normally mech can do this trick only when mech's base already gone by your bio in exchange (which is positive trade most cases). I have quite opposite feeling as TvT most skillbased and "fair" matchup for me, when TvP just terrible random or you have to turtle with constant fear of dying even if you scout... and it's d1 with 120-160 apm.
some parts of the build opening did look a really weird, but honestly you could see that easily in masters as well. F2 abuse can easily be seen at 5K mmr as well. Generally the speed at which he moved around the map while maintaining the macro made me think this was a 4.5k+ MMR game as well. Definitely didn't look like diamond from what we saw.

You guys should definitely do a podcast you are the two best SC2 streamers and for completely different reasons. Harstem's got the snipe insults expert level execution on those, he also has Grand Master level know how on some of the very esoteric nuanced levels of gameplay at a high level, loco is one of the best at understanding the whole map and everything that's going on knowing what should be going on at what point staying engaged in the analytics and the discussion as the game evolves it would be an interesting development to see how that's applied to a podcast. You have your one guy who's able to hold the floor and evolve the discussion and then the other guy who's able to be the color commentary and you guys work well together you're my two favorites anyway good work
As a Terran expert I hereby inform both Lowko and Harstem that your TvT guess was just straight up wrong. First of all the builds: red went for a standard gas 1st 2gas build, whereas blue went Maru style rax gas gas. So far so good, however he kept the 2 reapers at home way too long and arrived on the other side of the map too late and thus got cleaned up by 5 units. He should hit when there are 3 units. Then the bunker was completely useless as 1 cyclone can literally solo kill 2 hellions and 3 reapers. Blue didn't know this and delayed his expansion by a huge amount because of this. Then he went for vikings instead of a raven which makes no sense unless you 1 base all in. This early game alone gave me the upper boundary of master 3. Then the unit control wasn't the greatest, like marines walking into tank range. Also no spotting marines and poor reaction to the counter attack. Therefore I went for D1. Close enough I guess.
No sarcasm, Blizzard matchmaking is really broken, I recently did my 5 placement matches after not playing since HotS and I'm apparently Master 3 with 2600 MMR (Europe)

I actually beat both players today! First time for everything. Slightly beat Lowko with my personal best score of 10. Huge comeback from last week where I think I got 21. Maybe next week I can get single digits. . . . R1: D1 - 2 points. Like Harstem, I was debating between D1 and M3. R2: D3 - 2 points. I was way underestimating this one and was going to guess Platinum. They talked me into moving up a league with all of their compliments. R3: S2 - 4 points. R4: P1 - 2 points.

Having rewatched the video again. I can see how the guess in the second round could be lower than Masters because there was a lot of Janky camera movement through the clip it's just that the game play seemed better than the last one.
Okay, so giving average points for no guess is all kinds of bad. 1. We're measuring individual skill. Obviously, when you measure ones skill (or luck if you think there's no skill to it) you measure the actual data with the participant involved and do not involve the average stats. When you measure how far someone can jump, you don't pull up the average jump for every jump they didn't take. That's bonkers. You still need to assign some value to that jump not taken, but it mustn't be an average jump. You could add a multiplier to their score, you could add a lowest score, or their average score multiplied by some amount. You can think of how to do it, but taking an average score of everyone else participating is not the way, especially with a system like this. 2. This discourages guessing. I mean it. Imagine a situation: you encounter a hard guess and you're pretty sure, that you can't guess this one correctly - then by not taking a guess you would be close to a good score, BUT since the more difficult the case is, the more people could resort to not taking a guess, which leads to only a handfull of guesses being made, which in turn lessens the score the World in Harstem vs the World will get, since less guesses mean less consistent rounding. For example when rounding 10 guesses a deviation of one guess by 10 points would sway the rounding much more, that if there's 100 guesses. I'm pretty sure there are more problems with this, that I don't see at the moment. Maybe other viewers can get some input on that one as well. Thanks
Imagine someone now making a lot of fake accounts to make some dumb guess (like bronze 1 every single game) to make everyone, who doesn't participate take a lot of points... I guess I shouldn't have said that out loud, but I'm not the only one with the brains. You better come up with another plan for people, who don't participate and announce that, because this could end up pretty bad. If people leave backdoors like this and something's on the line I bet there's gonna be people, who would use it.

The second round, I knew they were overestimating the rank. Really good micro, they were quite accurate in that it was master and GM level plays, but they’re Terran, so you still lose to Gold Zerg and Silver Protoss a-moving their armies.
11:22 tbh that might be the case. My highest rank ever was Diamond 3 (I stopped playing sc2 after that for over a year). But recently after coming back and playing a few games like an absolute bot and still somehow winning I got Master 3 with 3800 MMR. That's like low D3 mmr.
My prediction vs the result. Round 1: Gold 1. Result: Master 3. Round 2: Dia 1. Result: Dia 2. Round 3: Gold 1. Result: Gold 2. Round 4: Plat 1. Result: Plat 2. The first round of early ling bane rush is really tough. The red player makes me feel the micro is a bit weird and not high level enough. Rest is close but consistently higher one tier. But I think my instinct is correct here.
Harstem. I think you need to play a few gold, platinum and diamond players to remind yourself what our level is. The other good thing about it is you'll basically get a 5min no rush kind of game.
Yeah, it's basically the opponent trying to figure out for five minutes whether he has enough units to attack and decides that he hasn't so adds another five minutes to preparation time and expands occasionally. Like me.
There is always the possibility that some good players that are at a lower mmr that they should be are there because they just droped by doing 30 loses in a row to farm the ladder .
Playing along! Round 1: Locked Masters 3, 0 points, woo! Round 2: Thought halfway through, "This **looks** like masters, but diamond can look like masters when the game is super standard and there's nothing to provoke mistakes." Locked Masters 1 anyhow, should have gone with my gut; 4 points. Oof. Round 3: Locked Plat 2. The screen scrolling is deceptive; even if a player does a quick edgescroll flick, replays will show it as a slow pan to try to make it more viewable. Still overestimated though... 3 points. Round 4: Weeeiiirrrd mix of high level and low level skills; strikes me as players who have watched pro players and studied how the game is supposed to be played, but not practiced enough to actually execute, which in starcraft tends to be all you need to get to plat. Locked plat 3: 1 point Final score 8... not bad if I do say so myself... not that anyone is going to believe me, I suppose.
That's #2 AND beating the reigning champion! Very impressive! You should definitely test your luck in vs the world - even though there seems to be far scarier competition :p
For Harstem vs the World what score did you give the people in the top 4 for the weeks that they did not participate? If it's ignored, basically 0, then wouldn't that give an advantage to someone who doesn't guess every week? Great series as always a blast to watch :)
If you (have to) skip a week, you will get the average community guess for that week :) So it will be ok to good in most weeks, but you obviously cannot win by just being average :p
I had a bug with the reclassification of my Terran race on the EU server, I went from platinum 1 to bronze 1, and the worst is that I continue to play opponents as strong as before. On the other hand in Protoss and Zerg I am always diamond. Does anyone know why? I saw a clip of a Korean bronze 1 pro, is it the same thing that happened to him?
What's the punishment for not guessing for a week? Is it 1 or 2 points? Just thuinking that it might be a good idea to make sure that it's not a strategy to avoid guessing if it's a confusing game.

Your friend B proposes a game of darts. Each gets 3 throws. First throw you get 15, friend A gets 10, friend B - 20. Second throw you get 20, friend A - 18, friend B doesn't throw. You and friend A are somewhat puzzled, but ok. Third throw you get 16, friend A gets 16 and friend B doesn't throw again. You sum up points and your friend B says he won, because he was apparently getting average of our shots somehow. (so it's You:51, A:44, B:54) Me and my friend A could just laugh it off, but if that's 100+ randoms on the internet - i don't think so. I was always weirded out by bad PR decision of big companies, thinking that it's some corpo garbage at play. Now I see it on individual level and frankly I'm not impressed

Dam; now i am sorry i didn't play Harstem vs the world. In the last 5 games i only got 3 points so i would probably get the shirt, but at the beginning of the season i thought i had no chance.

Or is this already accounted for and i missed it? Would be a shame for these who participate weekly and get good hit, but never would beat the slackers who get lucky once or twice.
We are currently looking at different options here. On the board we have the idea of really giving a penalty point per miss (additional to the average score) or maybe some kind of hybrid solution, giving a player the opportunity to miss 1 or 2 weeks without a direct penalty, but penalising them from the 3rd miss on.

The second round, I knew they were overestimating the rank.
Really good micro, they were quite accurate in that it was master and GM level plays, but they’re Terran, so you still lose to Gold Zerg and Silver Protoss a-moving their armies.

11:22 tbh that might be the case. My highest rank ever was Diamond 3 (I stopped playing sc2 after that for over a year). But recently after coming back and playing a few games like an absolute bot and still somehow winning I got Master 3 with 3800 MMR. That's like low D3 mmr.
Not guessing every week means a lower score, doesn't it? It seems the best way to win would be to make only 1 guess.
You will get the average score of the week if you skip a week.

The first round of early ling bane rush is really tough. The red player makes me feel the micro is a bit weird and not high level enough.
Rest is close but consistently higher one tier. But I think my instinct is correct here.

Harstem. I think you need to play a few gold, platinum and diamond players to remind yourself what our level is. The other good thing about it is you'll basically get a 5min no rush kind of game.

Yeah, it's basically the opponent trying to figure out for five minutes whether he has enough units to attack and decides that he hasn't so adds another five minutes to preparation time and expands occasionally. Like me.

There is always the possibility that some good players that are at a lower mmr that they should be are there because they just droped by doing 30 loses in a row to farm the ladder .
Happens to me everytime i make it to diamond, then its non stop losses

Round 1: Locked Masters 3, 0 points, woo!
Round 2: Thought halfway through, "This **looks** like masters, but diamond can look like masters when the game is super standard and there's nothing to provoke mistakes." Locked Masters 1 anyhow, should have gone with my gut; 4 points. Oof.
Round 3: Locked Plat 2. The screen scrolling is deceptive; even if a player does a quick edgescroll flick, replays will show it as a slow pan to try to make it more viewable. Still overestimated though... 3 points.
Round 4: Weeeiiirrrd mix of high level and low level skills; strikes me as players who have watched pro players and studied how the game is supposed to be played, but not practiced enough to actually execute, which in starcraft tends to be all you need to get to plat. Locked plat 3: 1 point
Final score 8... not bad if I do say so myself... not that anyone is going to believe me, I suppose.
That's #2 AND beating the reigning champion! Very impressive! You should definitely test your luck in vs the world - even though there seems to be far scarier competition :p

For Harstem vs the World what score did you give the people in the top 4 for the weeks that they did not participate? If it's ignored, basically 0, then wouldn't that give an advantage to someone who doesn't guess every week?

If you (have to) skip a week, you will get the average community guess for that week :) So it will be ok to good in most weeks, but you obviously cannot win by just being average :p

I had a bug with the reclassification of my Terran race on the EU server, I went from platinum 1 to bronze 1, and the worst is that I continue to play opponents as strong as before. On the other hand in Protoss and Zerg I am always diamond.

What's the punishment for not guessing for a week? Is it 1 or 2 points? Just thuinking that it might be a good idea to make sure that it's not a strategy to avoid guessing if it's a confusing game.
well, apparently there is NO punishment, i guess, so you get 0... so you get one guess in and do nothing and you win. When I heard him say that and that NONE of these participants guessed every game, I was stunned.

Imagine you and two of your friends roll up into a bar. Your friend B proposes a game of darts. Each gets 3 throws. First throw you get 15, friend A gets 10, friend B - 20. Second throw you get 20, friend A - 18, friend B doesn't throw. You and friend A are somewhat puzzled, but ok. Third throw you get 16, friend A gets 16 and friend B doesn't throw again. You sum up points and your friend B says he won, because he was apparently getting average of our shots somehow. (so it's You:51, A:44, B:54)
Me and my friend A could just laugh it off, but if that's 100+ randoms on the internet - i don't think so.

Also shouldn't nit participating for a week be punished at least with one point? Or is this already accounted for and i missed it? Would be a shame for these who participate weekly and get good hit, but never would beat the slackers who get lucky once or twice.
We are currently looking at different options here. On the board we have the idea of really giving a penalty point per miss (additional to the average score) or maybe some kind of hybrid solution, giving a player the opportunity to miss 1 or 2 weeks without a direct penalty, but penalising them from the 3rd miss on.
But you should not forget, that it is impossible to win with just the average score, so either way it won't affect the top positions :)
