I heard from the folks at Fstoppers that luminosity masking is an incredibly powerful tool, but wow, that really was incredible what you did with that base image.
That double processing with the "darkest" exposure was very helpful. "Bridging the gap" as you called it is a step I seem to often miss. Thanks, Jimmy.

Fantastic tutorial Jimmy! Really helpful for me, this is the most complex blending situation in my opinion, also more difficult than "trees against the sky". With that bright sky, and also some bright parts on top of the mountains, where both, a luminosity mask and a quick selection mask doesnt work a 100%, because they creating halos, especially at the edges. This is a fantastic and also quick way to fix that problem, thanks a lot :)

With such an extensive knowledge and contribution, I just don't understand how anyone could leave negative comment, yet there are. I wonder if they're not from some smart asses that think they know better, which they probably often won't... But anyway, for kindness and appreciation, they sure don't know much...
Great work, as always. Much appreciated. You know, rather than turning off all the layers one by one to show the original image, you can just ALT-click the eyeball on the base layer and it will toggle between all layers and the clicked layer. Thought it might help ;-)
Nice tutorial Jimmy. You're generous to share your knowledge. I would be interested in seeing the difference between your final blended image and one where you just processed the middle image. It seems to me like there is enough data in the middle exposure if your bring down the highlights to -100, to get a nicely balanced final image. Then again maybe you would lose some saturation in the sky? Alternatively you could brighten the darkest image and I dare say the shadow noise would be unobtrusive. Do you have any thoughts on this?
derrick kelly thanks for your comment. The middle image did not have enough information it. You saw me bring the highlights down to -100 in the video. The highlights were still over exposed.
Hi Jimmy, have been watching your youtube videos for a while now and they are great. Here is my problem, I am a commercial photographer in the real estate market. My average day consists of photographing real estate properties in various locations within suburbia all the way to heavily forested surrounds. On an average busy day i have between 400 to 800 photos to sort through. My work flow begins by weeding out all the unnecessary photos, all those double and triples and those just incase scenario angles where i cover myself to get that best shot. So if i do 6 shoots in the day i try to provide the agent with 30 finished images from each shoot. Thats 180 finished shots and each angle has 3 images to cover dynamic range. Thats 540 photos on average i have to work with. If it took me 10 seconds to work on each image that would take me 1.5 hours of solid work at maximum speed, which we know is impossible. Im up till about 11pm each night trying to get all the work done. And here is the question, is there a way to do all the heavy lifting to batch process the photos so that all i have to do is a final quick adjustment with your software ???

Hey jimmy. Another great video! I always learn something every time I watch. I've been trying to work a lot with masks lately and I have a quick question about something I always see done in your videos. If this has been explained before somewhere else feel free to redirect me. But: When making a mask or applying image, does it matter which images are currently selected? I notice you often deselect the darker image when making the mask on your lighter image, and vice versa. How does this selection effect the mask which is about to be related? I hope my question is clear. As always, thanks for any help.
Thank you for getting a little more advanced with us! One issue that I've had with your technique of using smart objects is that it removes the ability to auto align the layers once loaded in PS. Do you have a work around for that?
Dear Jimmy, I have been watching most of your tutorials lately and I must admit that I did learn a lot 😬 so thanks a lot!!!🙏 However I am in love with panos and I often shot multiple exposures for multiple vertical images... But most of the time if I do 3 different stitched panos in Photoshop with each set of exposures then the 3 panos generated are all slightly different and cannot be aligned properly and therefore cannot be used as 3 brackted panos for a final processing and luminosity mask blending... Maybe is there a way to tell Photoshop to process the exact same stiching? I did also try to reverse the process by blending the 3 exposures of each vertical image ... process them with luminosity masking and stich the result into a final pano But this hard with complex pano and it is hard to prevesualize the result on the separate vertical images.... I also believe I am not constistant enough through the process and I do end up with a silghtly different result on each vertical image which do cause problem in the final stiching😤😤😤 In order to avoid this I have tried to use the 3 exposures to create an HDR file for each vertical images, stichted those HDR files together in a pano that should contain much more details... Finally in order to get as much as possible a natural look and not am obvious nasty hdr look... I usually double process this HDR pano in order to blend a darker and a lighter version of it with luminosity masks... I hope I am clear enough and maybe you do have an advise on this type of workflow ? Thanks in advance for this Time consuming comment Have a great day Julien

As an avid user of instamask and raya pro, i'd like to ask you , could you have achieved the same result with just three clicks using raya pro?
Jimmy With the recent eclipse totality that i shot I am having issues attempting to blend these images with instamask. any chance you will be making a video ion how best to do this? I have exposures if you require them to demonstrate. please let me know.
Jimmy, I was actually just thinking about one of your videos where you talked about shooting directly into the sun. What about during the total eclipse? Do you need one of those "sun filters" o can you just shoot away like you mentioned in the other video? Sorry this has nothing to do with this video, it just popped up when I was wondering what you would do in this situation.
Jimmy, I would love to purchase your new course but I have a problem. It's my problem not yours but I am probably not alone. Here it is. I struggle with following these tutorials when there are constant references to mac or PC. When I hear "press command on a mac control on a PC" or some other combination I just go huh, switch off, miss the point, wind back, start again, until frustration sets in and I literally do switch off. I know it is me but I can't help it and I know you are trying to cover both OS's at the same time but nope, can't do it! You are not alone in this approach and I do understand but people like me need a PC specific version or a mac specific version. Hopefully this is something you could consider but until then I am sadly going to hold fire on buying something I actually do want for this reason alone. All the best.

In all my years of creating courses/TH-cam videos, you are the first person to mention this, so I'm happy to say I don't think this has affected my course sales/TH-cam followers too much. I simply can't make one course for PC users and one for Mac users, so I'm afraid my courses will not be suitable for you. Thanks for the feedback though.

they are just short cut , you just do it , for example control L is level , you can do it in both ways , short cut is just faster but I can't see where is the problem. if he says press control Lol :) you do it and it works ;) trust me, seems complicated at the beginning but as you go further you kind of fill up the " computer vocabulary "
sam w Well, I have IT qualifications so I do have a pretty substantial "computer vocabulary" already! 😀 I was merely making a point (albeit apparently clumsily) that some of us struggle with the dual OS approach in instructional videos, as concentration is key (at least it is for me) when trying to learn. Jimmy admitted that he wasn't aware of this issue so I think my point is valid, lol. As a qualified training assessor it has always been part of my professional development to embrace any information that mitigates the learning process. It was a small point that I raised, yes, but unfortunately for me it is a deal breaker. Enough said!
Don't allow yourself to get too frustrated. It will click. I was in the same boat, I've been trying to develop a workflow for months using luminosity masking, and I could never get good results. I just stuck with it and practiced and one day, it finally all made sense, and now I am getting the results I want. Just stick with it and you'll have it in no time.
Keep practicing. Follow his instructions step by step. Oftentimes I’d miss something and find myself screaming at my laptop. Ps is extremely frustrating at times, and I think it remains that way (at times) indefinitely (unless you’re someone that’s as much of an expert as Jimmy). Just keep at it. Luminosity masks are incredible to use and give you so much control over the editing process. Definitely elevated my editing game 2x.
They're so tough. I've watched countless videos. I tried starting with 5 exposures and got all mixed up. Then I used like two or three and it was alright. I still have a long way to go. but these advanced techniques aren't learned overnight. Keep at it! Good luck.
I don't get it either, there are to many videos from different people that have different ways of doing this it is very confusing I am starting to wonder if it is worth it or not right now I don't think it is.
Try to learn, understand and important: become routined in basic masking first. It is helpful to watch some videos or read articles about old analogue techniques. google lightmask or depthmask. Then it is much easier to understand how a mask has to look and what a mask is intended to do. Much later you should try these advanced techniques or you will become frustrated.
i have a question. how am i supposed so setup my monitor and my graphics driver to fit the norm . i set everything on default but it looks kinda grey. iam not quite sure what right because a picture might be to grey for me while others have a colorful piece art
how I am supposed to make these photos work when this method doesnt work with my photos? I have 2 shots, 1 for foreground and 1 one for sunset. the so called blending point with these 2 shots is trees, so photoshop just can't blend it cleanly. what should I do? the focus on the pic one is on the trees, and the focus is on the pic 2 is also on the trees. I have tried to manually draw the blend to the trees but it too time taking
With what camera these were made? I kind of think that an single exposure from a nikon d810 at iso 64 would be sort of similar to this... And with the DR getting better... Its not that extreme of a scene EDIT im guessing d750 cause its 24mpix and actually amazing dr

Hi Jimmy, your tutorial is extremely helpful and very clearly explained in each tiny details. However I am a bit lost on stacking the 3 smart objects together, when I do so only the lower image in the stack is kept as smart object while the upper files are becoming rasterized and I cannot sort out... Would you please explain how to stack correctly the three smart objects without using raya pro tool? My baseline workflow is starting from a collection of images in Lightroom, then opening each image as a smart object in Photoshop and stacking together (unsuccessfully) Thanks in advance for your help Greetings from the warm Sicily! Hi Rebwar, may thanks for your hint, you are right! I did it just yesterday night and it worked properly. In fact my "mistake" was to simply select each image (CTRL +A) then copy and paste. Nevertheless I have now another question, once all the smart objects are stacked together it looks like that the fuction "automatic alignment" does not shows off...any idea to align the two frames without being forced to rasterize? Jimmy - Your videos are always so fantastic and contain a plethora of knowledge. I always end up learning a trick or two. I have to ask though, how do you remember all of these techniques? Do you have a method for storing all of these processing tips? I find myself re watching your videos to remember the different ways to process various scenes (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

You know, rather than turning off all the layers one by one to show the original image, you can just ALT-click the eyeball on the base layer and it will toggle between all layers and the clicked layer. Thought it might help ;-)

Nice tutorial Jimmy. You're generous to share your knowledge. I would be interested in seeing the difference between your final blended image and one where you just processed the middle image. It seems to me like there is enough data in the middle exposure if your bring down the highlights to -100, to get a nicely balanced final image. Then again maybe you would lose some saturation in the sky? Alternatively you could brighten the darkest image and I dare say the shadow noise would be unobtrusive. Do you have any thoughts on this?
derrick kelly thanks for your comment. The middle image did not have enough information it. You saw me bring the highlights down to -100 in the video. The highlights were still over exposed.
Hi Jimmy, have been watching your youtube videos for a while now and they are great.
Here is my problem, I am a commercial photographer in the real estate market. My average day consists of photographing real estate properties in various locations within suburbia all the way to heavily forested surrounds. On an average busy day i have between 400 to 800 photos to sort through. My work flow begins by weeding out all the unnecessary photos, all those double and triples and those just incase scenario angles where i cover myself to get that best shot.
So if i do 6 shoots in the day i try to provide the agent with 30 finished images from each shoot. Thats 180 finished shots and each angle has 3 images to cover dynamic range. Thats 540 photos on average i have to work with. If it took me 10 seconds to work on each image that would take me 1.5 hours of solid work at maximum speed, which we know is impossible.
Im up till about 11pm each night trying to get all the work done.
And here is the question, is there a way to do all the heavy lifting to batch process the photos so that all i have to do is a final quick adjustment with your software ???

Hey jimmy. Another great video! I always learn something every time I watch. I've been trying to work a lot with masks lately and I have a quick question about something I always see done in your videos. If this has been explained before somewhere else feel free to redirect me. But:
When making a mask or applying image, does it matter which images are currently selected? I notice you often deselect the darker image when making the mask on your lighter image, and vice versa. How does this selection effect the mask which is about to be related?
I hope my question is clear.

Thank you for getting a little more advanced with us! One issue that I've had with your technique of using smart objects is that it removes the ability to auto align the layers once loaded in PS. Do you have a work around for that?

I have been watching most of your tutorials lately and I must admit that I did learn a lot 😬 so thanks a lot!!!🙏
However I am in love with panos and I often shot multiple exposures for multiple vertical images...
But most of the time if I do 3 different stitched panos in Photoshop with each set of exposures then the 3 panos generated are all slightly different and cannot be aligned properly and therefore cannot be used as 3 brackted panos for a final processing and luminosity mask blending...
Maybe is there a way to tell Photoshop to process the exact same stiching?
I did also try to reverse the process by blending the 3 exposures of each vertical image ... process them with luminosity masking and stich the result into a final pano
But this hard with complex pano and it is hard to prevesualize the result on the separate vertical images....
I also believe I am not constistant enough through the process and I do end up with a silghtly different result on each vertical image which do cause problem in the final stiching😤😤😤
In order to avoid this I have tried to use the 3 exposures to create an HDR file for each vertical images, stichted those HDR files together in a pano that should contain much more details...
Finally in order to get as much as possible a natural look and not am obvious nasty hdr look... I usually double process this HDR pano in order to blend a darker and a lighter version of it with luminosity masks...
I hope I am clear enough and maybe you do have an advise on this type of workflow ?

As an avid user of instamask and raya pro, i'd like to ask you , could you have achieved the same result with just three clicks using raya pro?

Jimmy, I was actually just thinking about one of your videos where you talked about shooting directly into the sun. What about during the total eclipse? Do you need one of those "sun filters" o can you just shoot away like you mentioned in the other video? Sorry this has nothing to do with this video, it just popped up when I was wondering what you would do in this situation.

Jimmy, I would love to purchase your new course but I have a problem. It's my problem not yours but I am probably not alone. Here it is. I struggle with following these tutorials when there are constant references to mac or PC. When I hear "press command on a mac control on a PC" or some other combination I just go huh, switch off, miss the point, wind back, start again, until frustration sets in and I literally do switch off. I know it is me but I can't help it and I know you are trying to cover both OS's at the same time but nope, can't do it! You are not alone in this approach and I do understand but people like me need a PC specific version or a mac specific version. Hopefully this is something you could consider but until then I am sadly going to hold fire on buying something I actually do want for this reason alone. All the best.

In all my years of creating courses/TH-cam videos, you are the first person to mention this, so I'm happy to say I don't think this has affected my course sales/TH-cam followers too much. I simply can't make one course for PC users and one for Mac users, so I'm afraid my courses will not be suitable for you.

As I said, if this is a problem to me it will be to others too. It's just me being the first one gullible enough to mention it! I have never even touched a mac let alone used one. Hey ho, if it can't be done I will have to pass. It's a shame but at least I had the balls to ask mate!
they are just short cut , you just do it , for example control L is level , you can do it in both ways , short cut is just faster but I can't see where is the problem. if he says press control Lol :) you do it and it works ;) trust me, seems complicated at the beginning but as you go further you kind of fill up the " computer vocabulary "
sam w Well, I have IT qualifications so I do have a pretty substantial "computer vocabulary" already! 😀 I was merely making a point (albeit apparently clumsily) that some of us struggle with the dual OS approach in instructional videos, as concentration is key (at least it is for me) when trying to learn. Jimmy admitted that he wasn't aware of this issue so I think my point is valid, lol. As a qualified training assessor it has always been part of my professional development to embrace any information that mitigates the learning process. It was a small point that I raised, yes, but unfortunately for me it is a deal breaker. Enough said!

Don't allow yourself to get too frustrated. It will click. I was in the same boat, I've been trying to develop a workflow for months using luminosity masking, and I could never get good results. I just stuck with it and practiced and one day, it finally all made sense, and now I am getting the results I want. Just stick with it and you'll have it in no time.
Keep practicing. Follow his instructions step by step. Oftentimes I’d miss something and find myself screaming at my laptop. Ps is extremely frustrating at times, and I think it remains that way (at times) indefinitely (unless you’re someone that’s as much of an expert as Jimmy). Just keep at it. Luminosity masks are incredible to use and give you so much control over the editing process. Definitely elevated my editing game 2x.
They're so tough. I've watched countless videos. I tried starting with 5 exposures and got all mixed up. Then I used like two or three and it was alright. I still have a long way to go. but these advanced techniques aren't learned overnight. Keep at it! Good luck.
I don't get it either, there are to many videos from different people that have different ways of doing this it is very confusing I am starting to wonder if it is worth it or not right now I don't think it is.
Try to learn, understand and important: become routined in basic masking first.
It is helpful to watch some videos or read articles about old analogue techniques. google lightmask or depthmask. Then it is much easier to understand how a mask has to look and what a mask is intended to do.
Much later you should try these advanced techniques or you will become frustrated.
i have a question.
how am i supposed so setup my monitor and my graphics driver to fit the norm . i set everything on default but it looks kinda grey. iam not quite sure what right because a picture might be to grey for me while others have a colorful piece art
Use a monitor calibrator. I have the Datacolor Spyder5 pro. Easy to use and I calibrate once a month since it only takes a few minutes.
how I am supposed to make these photos work when this method doesnt work with my photos? I have 2 shots, 1 for foreground and 1 one for sunset. the so called blending point with these 2 shots is trees, so photoshop just can't blend it cleanly. what should I do? the focus on the pic one is on the trees, and the focus is on the pic 2 is also on the trees. I have tried to manually draw the blend to the trees but it too time taking

With what camera these were made? I kind of think that an single exposure from a nikon d810 at iso 64 would be sort of similar to this... And with the DR getting better... Its not that extreme of a scene EDIT im guessing d750 cause its 24mpix and actually amazing dr

However I am a bit lost on stacking the 3 smart objects together, when I do so only the lower image in the stack is kept as smart object while the upper files are becoming rasterized and I cannot sort out...
Would you please explain how to stack correctly the three smart objects without using raya pro tool? My baseline workflow is starting from a collection of images in Lightroom, then opening each image as a smart object in Photoshop and stacking together (unsuccessfully)

Hi Rebwar, may thanks for your hint, you are right! I did it just yesterday night and it worked properly. In fact my "mistake" was to simply select each image (CTRL +A) then copy and paste.
Nevertheless I have now another question, once all the smart objects are stacked together it looks like that the fuction "automatic alignment" does not shows off...any idea to align the two frames without being forced to rasterize?
