    I want to address something that has been bothering me lately, and that is the repeat comment in some form or another, about .357 Sig ammo price and availability. Paraphrasing 100 comments into one here - ".357 Sig is not available anywhere, and it's two to three times the cost of 9mm so it's useless". My question to these people is - what are you even talking about?!
    I know that a lot of physical stores do rack up the price because all they offer is generally Federal American Eagle .357 Sig, which is very pricey ammo. But to say that the cartridge is hard to find and to say it's like $60 a box in general, is very factually wrong. Going on ammoseek, there are 5+ pages of .357 Sig for purchase just like any other popular cartridge, and about a dozen of these retailers offer 50 round boxes of .357 Sig for $22 to $25. Also, defensive ammo is often about the same price if not less than 9mm+P defensive ammo.
    The fact is, .357 Sig is not all that hard to find and not all that expensive. It's not a lot different (at least online) than buying a 50 round box of .357 Magnum for cost and availability, but for whatever reason a lot of people are either seriously misinformed or have an agenda to make it seem as .357 Sig ammo is about as rare and expensive as .455 Webley (5 retailers online averaging about $65-$70).

    I did shake the .357 Magnum cartridges before this video, and I could hear the powder sloshing back and forth. As a handloader, that is a tell tale sign that the powder in them was not magnum powder. Magnum powders are usually bulky so they slow burn, but that powder moving around sound is indication they used a powder that is typically used for rounds like 9mm, and just loaded to a certain charge of that to save money. Velocities were nearly the same as I would get when doing the same thing with cheap Titegroup powder with XTP bullets, throwing like 7 grains in there and getting about the same velocity. True magnum powders still cost the same per ounce, so using on average like 15 gr per cartridge of true magnum powder like a true magnum round should have, is something Corbon skimped on here.

      Exactly my thoughts. 357mag performance was OK. Except velocity spread was too great for premium ammo. They should market it as a moderate recoil defense load with a high performance bullet [and tighten up the SD]. Its dishonest [and unnecessary] to market that as full power 357 magnum.

      Yeah, sad to see that in Corbon, I used to get those cause they said 1400 fps on the box, and they were certainly LOUD, I think I have some hearing damage from my 2 1/2 Compensated from that, but I guess it's Best to go for Buffalo bore? Plus I tend to have the issue where, I don't always get a read. I figured the Magnum would be a little more powerful as I know that usually the 357 Magum is properly loaded and will beat the 357 Sig, but since this revolver ammo has been loaded down, and this 357 Sig semi-auto ammo loaded up, this today isn't the case. The semi-auto 10 mm is usually loaded down & wish the manufactures would treat the ammo as good as the 357 Sig. Wish I could find 10 mm loaded as it was intended to be unless you buy the real expensive rounds like Underwood & Buffalo Bore, as well as a couple of others too, but still expensive. Thinking about reloading (especially 10 mm) as you could load anything you wanted, as does "The Turkey's Opinion". Otherwise you're shooting about what 40 S&W gives you, & sometimes even less.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  ปีที่แล้ว

      10mm is one that can be loaded really well. With revolver rounds, hand loading gets complicated with getting crimps perfect enough to build pressure, but 10mm loaded with basic Aliant Power Pistol will really get you up there. I haven't loaded 10mm specifically, but did load .45 ACP+P with that powder, starting charge 230 gr bullet gave me over 900 FPS, top charge was like 1,100 FPS so it's worth it to hand load semi auto calibers like 10mm. With .357 Mag, I have tried everything from Magnum 296 powder, to Ramshot Enforcer and others and I get like 125 gr at 1,400 FPS with max charges. You really have to be a crimp master to make .357 Mag work really well. Just my experience, I am sure other's have different experiences.

    I’ve said before that the .357 SIG does a great job of reproducing the legendary ballistics of the 125 grain .357 Magnum in an auto pistol. But you’ll never see a .357 SIG load to equal Buffalo Bore’s monster stomper 180 grain .357 hunting load. The .357 SIG is a one trick pony. Too bad Cor-bon has backed away from their reputation for hot ammo. Call this one a +P+ or Treasury Load, nearly a Magnum. BTW back in the 1970’s I reproduced the original 1935 claimed ballistics for .357 with a hard cast bullet in my 8-3/8” Model 27. I used a load of Herco listed in the Lyman 45th. But I cratered primers and pierced one. 😮

  • @larrydavis9851
    @larrydavis9851 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've never understood the issues with Corbon, but it's a concern I've had with them my entire adult life.
    Some of the hottest and weakest handgun ammo I've ever shot was from Corbon. I took some of their 200 grain hardcast loads in 357 Magnum for a test drive about 15 years ago and out of a 4" GP100 they were monstrous! Very powerful, lots of recoil, and unacceptably sticky extraction.
    A few months ago I purchased some of their 9mm+P 125 grain JHPs and the rounds in the box I got were so weak they barely cycled in my Beretta 92.
    Most of the ammo I've bought in between has been plagued with one issue or another. I was really hoping after so long, they had improved their quality control but....sadly they seem as hit-and-miss as ever.

  • @Fudmottin
    @Fudmottin ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm rather disappointed in that 357 load. The Sig stuff was good. I won't be wasting any money on that Corbon 357 mag load.
    ETA: I should have waited until the end to comment. That primer falling out is no bueno. It's something I might expect from brass that has been fired too much or is overly hot. I've had flattened and cratered primers before. But never have I had one fall out!
    As for the Corbon in 357 mag, you do have a point about it being a lower recoil load. I don't know how it would do in a snub either, because that's where you would want something that doesn't cause pain and bleeding! That's why choosing 357 Magnum for a 340PD or M&P340 is so challenging. The recoil is just wicked and so is the blast.

Some manufacturers do make “ Short Barrel “ loads for snub nose revolvers. So there can be exceptions T my hypothesis.

      I don't know what you mean, I shouldn't forget. All revolvers have cylinder gaps and I think that is what you are referring to. Average of 5% velocity loss but I have seen it as low as 1% loss. Even at 5% loss that's 60 FPS. Either way, a 4" revolver is a full size handgun and a 4" semi auto is a compact handgun that is significantly smaller. I am going as fair as I possibly can with what I am doing, as at the end of the day the same size profile handgun VS another of the same size, is what one would be carrying VS the other. If I was in 4" semi auto range, i'd be carry a 3" revolver.

If you fired the same ammo out of each of the three pistols, would you suspect that one copy of the gun would shoot faster than the other copies (ft per second of projectile as measured by chronograph)? I can't think of a good reason why one Glock g19 would fire faster than another Glock, but I thought I would ask for your advice, because you have more experience shooting handguns and conducting experiments with them.

      I doubt it. An 8" barrel with a load of this nature would be even slower in an 8" barrel. More barrel automatically equaling more velocity only applies when a load has enough power to keep increasing. Something like this load would top off at probably 5" of barrel and then start slowing down due to friction.

    Where do you even get 357s that low on grain?? My 16 year old son would love to no. 🤣😁

    Very slow for 125s in a 357. With 21 or so grains of h110 I've pushed 125 xtps close to 1600 with a 6 inch revolver, and they're cooking at a silly 2175 fps from an 18.5 inch rifle

    4 inch is 4 inch i would think.

      4" semi auto would give roughly 2.8" of travel in the barrel. A 4" revolver gives roughly 4.3". So that's like taking two semi autos, one 3" and one 4.5" barrels, and saying "same!"

    Note to self: Dont buy Corbon .357 Magnum. That velocity was just sad, even if the performance was "okay".

      Buffalo Bore is where it's at for velocity hogs. Getting some chrono numbers above 1,700 FPS, above 800 ft lbs in a 4" barrel is awesome.

    That 357 magnum is weak. It’s a 38 special plus p.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In terms of ft lbs energy, a 4" revolver with .38 Special+P with most ammo is 250-300 ft lbs energy. I'm not sure what you think .38 Special+P is, but it's not this. Only way you get numbers like 445 ft lbs energy is Buffalo Bore or Underwood, and even then it's usually not that high with JHP bullets.

      @@GunSam thanks for the correction. I would not carry 357 this weak, on a snub nose my minimum is 400 pounds and 550 on my 4 inch. If i want to carry weak ammo, I carry 9mm standard pressure.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have seen a lot better ballistic performance with .38 Special+P than 9mm. If you look at the noses of HP ammo, .38 Special always has a larger hollow cavity. I have taken .38 Special+P at maybe 250 ft lbs energy, compared it to 9mm+P at 375 ft lbs energy, and have drastically more damage in my gel than the 9mm. Energy is important, but once you get to a certain amount, a little more doesn't necessarily give you anything more if the bullet design can't work with that energy.
