Found this Artist round 5 yrs ago. Kept seeing the same recommended song pop up. Finally watched/ listened to it. Changed my musical experience going forward. No other singer, band or performer is as versatile as her. Well, in todays landscape of cookie cutter pop bands, vanilla sounding rock bands, or copy cat metal bands being pushed upon society by radio or advertisement. As versatile as The Beatles/ Queen/ Bowie in the styles of music she tackles. As political or outspoken as The Clash or Dylan in the topics she addresses in her songs As Poetic as Dylan or Roger Waters in her lyrics. As versatile live in her renditions of her songs as Neil Young. You just can't put her in a box. You can't predict whats next. This song encapsulates her better then any other. This performance....completely different from Album version. What is this? Folk? Slower tempo Rock? Pop? The ballad on an European Metal Album? Parts of all, the sum of none. Unique yet familiar. Fresh yet timeless. I do not love everything she has done, even dislike some. But her body of work is unmatched by her generational peers.
Agree with Rolfjamne, you're spot on, truly spot on. She has an overall palette as wide as a whole planet... Personally love seeing somebody expressing a high thinking of Neil Young and of the singing little giant from Norway, in a same statement.🙂👍
Just saw her live on Tuesday. From the music to her interactions with the audience...just a unique and special evening. If she started a cult I would absolutely join it.
Yeah, I think she's about as fascinating as it can get. She's so different (in a good way) from anybody I've ever encountered. Hopefully, at some point you get a chance to check out the HAIK documentary, which is actually half-documentary and half-concert. It really does a great job of displaying her personality and humanity. You can't help but love her even more after watching that.
Aurora is Mother Earth in this song, and she is calling humanity for "a man with no wisdon" and "a soul with no king", and saying we are friends with the devil, and that we have no guilt and no shame for what we have done to Earth. She did this before in an old song "Soulless Creatures", where it was also Mother Earth calling humanity that.
He's playing a mandola which is basically larger than a standard sized mandolin. It is also most times tuned an octave lower than the standard mandolin.
Great reaction and analysis👍 This performance is perfection😍😍 She has several live versions of this song + the studio version and the remix featuring NATURE💚 AURORA speaks about A Soul With No King during her live concert in Kingston at Pryzm: “I feel like our souls are lost, and I feel like our souls don’t know what to do. We haven’t given them any value, and we haven’t given them any [hold/home]. And I feel like we really need to prove to our soul that we’re its ruler - and we’d hear it and we will guide it by being just decent, [empathetic], good human beings. And I think about what’s happening in Palestine a lot when I sing this song because I don’t understand how in the modern time - in modern times like this - that we can disagree on whether something so heart-breaking is wrong or not. I don’t understand.” “You speak of the devil Like he's not your friend When the world starts to burn Give your water to him” Love that line.
I'd agree with a lot of your interpretation. That Aurora is singing, as mother Earth, and lamenting how humanity has sold out, embraced the devil, and lost contact with Mother Earth. That when she says, you know my name, she's saying you know I used to mean a lot to you, so why won't you call my out my name now. My interpretation of when she says, when the world starts to burn, she's talking about climate change. However, as we all know, Aurora loves a bit of ambiguity in her songs, that can be interpreted in different ways.
A really good Aurora song and performance Invisible Wounds th-cam.com/video/-M6j6Xy5mjk/w-d-xo.html Have you seen this? AURORA - Tour Diary - Japan 2024 or this Backstage with AURORA | Royal Albert Hall
Correct choice, in my view this is her best interpretation of this song. Agreed, the album is about us and nature so good interpretation. That sung yell is epic, for an even better one see her recent collaberation with Jacob Collier, The Rock/Seed.
