Hi! Art historian here :) You are a gem, and also right about your take on Impressionism! Impressionism is many things as there were many artists part of that group. Each with their own way of doing impressionistic painting. The name "Impressionism" actually comes from a bad review of their first exhibition in the 1870'ies: An art critic by the name of Leroy (very famous at the time) said that the paintings were mere impressions of reality, and meant it as a derogatory term. The young artists took it and used it, like the badasses they were! What I believe the main tennant in the impressionist movement is in fact the way they give the impression of landscapes, people, and things. A sense of cohession in light and tone (as you do!), and capturing the atmosphere (they called it "envoloppe" - an envolope of atmosphere).

18 year art educator here - keep doing what you're doing! It's amazing that you were so inspired by the exhibit. And it's perfectly okay to take the parts of movements you find useful. Some will say there are all these rules to good art but if you find something that works for you and it makes you happy, that's all you need. You will find your style evolving the longer you art. I used to find that scary, but I am so thankful I ended where I am now - my art makes me really happy. I love your art and your voice overs.

If the exhibit gave you a new appreciation for impressionism, you did take something from it! Art movements are complicated, long and always open to interpretation (I do so much googling in art museums lol) so of course you didn't glean the full history and intent of impressionism from one exhibit, but it did what it aimed to do, which was introduce you to a new perspective and get you passionate about the style :)

You are so sweet ❤ ok so I love impressionism, one of my favs, not offended I promise. It's leaning on the abstract side of things, it's about pulling away from the details and focusing more on lights and darks. Traditionally, the brushstrokes were key as seen in van gogh's works, but that's because of how they had to mix oil paint back then. It was thicc lol. A lot of art is working with what we have, that time period is marked by how little day light they had, the paint was mixed right there and had to be used right there, how the lighting would change throughout the day vs how long it took to paint, it forced them to figure out what was important to the artists at the time. So now it's more about what are you seeing in that moment and what youre able to catch quickly in said moment, the "impression". We have a lot more mediums at our disposal so it'll look different than back then, but inspired nonetheless. Lemme know if that helps fellow artist! ❤

I'm not real smart either, but I always thought of Impressionism like being about a moment in time and its emotional impact and the movement of light. Like those women in the poppy field by Monet, with the feeling of the fresh wind and the spring sunshine and the dresses blowing in the wind, and the impression being more like what stays in your brain afterwards rather than the actual realistic depiction of the moment. I love your squid!

I don’t believe there are any hard and fast rules when it comes to classifying Art. Art is continually evolving - and should. You love an art style, and it inspires you to incorporate elements of it and it grows into your style! I love watching you create your art and I can certainly see elements of your work that is inspired by an impressionistic style. Looking at the various artists I love to follow, it appears that many of my favorites did not go to art school and their art is learned through experiment, practice and intuition….and often quite unique. Art is about expression, and too often I hear artists talk about the struggle to break away from their art education. Taught to think of their art as right or wrong, taught rules, but not how to move beyond them. I’ve seen artists whose work was amazing, feel compelled to go to art school because they feared their work may be inferior because they didn’t have the degree to go with it, only to be told at school that their art was wrong, too commercial, naive etc and watch them attempt to ‘fit in’ instead of learning to experiment with various styles and techniques, ultimately they loose the love for their craft. There is value in learning to copy - it’s essentially how many of the great artists in history learned, and then they learned to break the rules. Essentially how impressionistic painters developed. Early impressionistic painters like Monet and Degas were considered revolutionary and criticized by the conventional painters and writers of the time. Their work was considered unfinished. Picasso experimented with many styles, including realism, and pushed his impressionistic style into cubism and beyond. He started art school but dropped out, finding it too stifling. I’m not sure if his work would have been so extraordinary if he had continued to try fit himself into art school. Don’t get me wrong, there is value in learning theory, techniques etc, just not convinced that school is the only way to learn these, and I think the art schools that nurture individuality are few and far between. In the past many artists learned through mentorship…now a days the access to information via the internet and social media, gives us the opportunity to be mentored by and exposed to so many artists! Your art brings pleasure and has value, just as does an art museum or gallery.

What Lives in the Mariana Trench?
    As found on Discover Magazine
    Snailfish
The snailfish is the most dominant family of fish spotted within the hadal zone.😅
These creatures, which have been recorded at nearly 27,000 feet deep, possess a skeleton made of cartilage - likely to help sustain such high pressure - and a translucent exterior that reveals all their inner organs.
    Cusk-eel
Cusk-eels have been recorded even deeper, just beyond 27,000 feet. Though they resemble an eel, they are actually fish closely related to tuna and seahorses.
Impressively, the cusk-eel can also be found in the shallowest parts of the ocean as well as the deepest, spanning an extraordinary range of viable conditions for survival.
    Amphipods
Along with sea cucumbers, tiny flea-like crustaceans known as amphipods are the most abundant animal in the hadal zone. Research indicates they scavenge on debris floating down from upper ocean zones. One unusually large species of amphipods, Alicella gigantea, can reach up to 13 inches in length.

I love the colours and I love your Canadian sorrys. ❤ And I believe you were right about impressionism? I mean the idea was to capture the impression of a moment rather than being obsessed with details. But I what do I know, I’m not an expert here. 😂
