If that's a high squat then today I have officially woke up in an alternate reality
They’re pretty high but it’s still a buttload of weight and like he explained it’s for a reason.
Whaattt??? I was expecting quarter squats those looked perfectly normal to me.
Yes exactly, he was definitely swuatting with depth. I guarantee that none of the mfs who were shitting on his depth, can squat that deep lol
These are perfectly fine squats. TH-cam folks have a hard time understanding we're not all built like Toshiki or Tian Tao.
If it's not in competition then you can squat to whatever "depth" you like.
Yeah Ilya squats pretty high too and no 105/109 has his leg strength for cleans.
He is a weightlifter, not a power lifter.
Weightlifting has no required depth in the squat portion of the lifts.
You can power snatch or power clean all you want so long as the lift is solid.
It might be the angle but imo he looks like he’s almost, if not, at powerlifting depth
I always squat to correct depth
@@travishouse5988 clown
i still can't believe how actually bs strong your posterior chain is
It's a bit absurd
@@smolboyi kinda bullshit level of stregth if I do say
Those squats look great to me. Not quite leaving an ass print on the floor like Clarence Kennedy, but deeper than most white-lighted powerlifting squats I've seen.
Nah he is slightly above parallel sometimes he hits parallel. In PL you have to go below parallel (well there are some shitty federations that are loosey goosey with it and they give PL a bad rep). I don’t get why he is doing this instead of front squats to depth
Man, this is pretty much how I squat lmao.
Sounds like you're hating on powerlifters 😂.
@@monojhqm Not at all. I totally respect powerlifters. I'm just hating on the inconsistent judging.
@@yoeyyoey8937 no tf he is not, get ya eyes checked, he is definitely not above parallel. Yall just come on the internet and say anything lmaooo
That’s hardly a high squat. Why go further than you need to get the job done?
Also if you do Q&As, when is the next? I’ve got a problem (always have) where my quad tendons are very prone to inflammation. I squat deep (not bragging at all btw) despite my long femurs because my ankle mobility is great. How would you adjust someone’s squat protocol to minimise irritation? I can barely manage two hard sessions a week before they get painful. I actually perform better with way less frequency (1 session every 2 weeks for example) so that’s probably the answer, but I just can’t keep out of the gym because I bloody love it.
I literally have the exact same problem. It would be amazing if he could address this in a Q&A
Sometimes it’s way harder to help without watching a video, at least. These are somewhat practical issues so maybe it would be easier to suggest a change if we could see it. I’ll give my opinion if you decide to post something.
Love to see sci-hub in the bookmarks toolbar 💪
Mirin posterior chain of peace..
That’s pretty good depth that’s a very good squat
Everyone that says it’s not good depth has no idea what they’re doing
@@mylesmcintyre385it’s not parallel at times.
He even says it himself it’s high, but well it’s for a reason.
It’s certainly not a quarter squat though, it’s l only a little high at times.
Bruh your squats are deeper than most people I see at the gym sheesh !
Basically exact same as me. I was blessed with a strong and sturdy back, the rare issues always go away quickly. My posterior chain was a strength before and it’s even stronger now. But boy do my quads need a lot of work. And they’ve been getting it, they’re much stronger than they used to be but still lots of work to do. And if you watch me squat, my priority is forward knee travel, stretching the quad. Depth looks funny sometimes but my quads are beat up after every leg workout and that’s the current goal since I’m not competing
Pop quiz answer. Ray Williams? He squats high in training because he's an absolute horse who needs like an hour to get mobile enough for full depth
“Very very weak quads” shows himself squatting 200kg for reps
Can relate. I was able to deadlift 200kg before I could squat 100kg. Now I can squat 140kg I can deadlift 260kg - go figure.
can you provide some insight there? i have a similar situation where my deadlift is far better than my squat, numerically and i struggle with depth.
was there a limiting factor there? i feel like in my case it cant be quads because if i dont squat for a while and come back, i get quad doms but nothing else.
@@emptyspacevacuumyou could still have proportionally weak quads. Or form can be cleaned up. Or you need to try a different form. Or different style/cues of bracing for squat. Some people dont brace the same for both squats and deadlifts
It is..
Acceptable
The barbell was not made to fit all different human sizes. Biomechanically some people are better pullers and worse squatters and vice versa. Generally, long femur means stronger back and posterior chain and weaker quads and inability to get ass to grass squats without extreme levels of natural mobility. Which also is not entirely trainable.
Literally completely fine
Looks fine to me. Most people get under that bar and make little corrections throughout the entire set anyway. What depth looks like can really vary as well. Calf and hamstring size will physically dictate available depth, the glutes and quads can balloon and make it hard to tell where the actual skeletal structure is. Of course camera angles.
I always knew the only way I'd make it into sikastan would be through wanted posters
lol
I've really liked (gasp) hack squat machines to really target the quads.
Thats normal depth for competition standards
People forget that there isn't a "right" way to train, there's a right way to train for your goals, if that depth is enough for your goals, then its deep enough
ray williams
Cutting low bar squats at parallel to the hip crease or slightly above while doing volume work.
They are slightly high, but he still makes them look good.
that's higher than a highschooler smoking oregano
if you're not prepping for a PL meet, anything resembling sort of parallel is fine
depth is perfect
Full rom on squats will build the quads more, calf to hamstring coverage
I don't see how relatively "shallow" squats are better than full depth squats for quad strength and size, considering a deep squat increases the stretch of the quads and resembles the catch position of a max clean/snatch better.
Your strong af
You broke parallel on every one of those squats. People are on crack saying those are high.
No he didn’t
@@ds1448 except he did.
Define Parralel
Solid squats, bro. If you ain't got haters, you are doing something wrong. 💪🏽🫡💪🏽
Whoever criticizes those squats should put up or shut up. Those are good squats, even for comps.
You hit parallel bro! Nicely done!
Plot twist… MeatEater TV is not in fact a nutrition channel 😂
dude thats a more than perfectly fine squat for someone who's tall and has longer femurs
So training those shallower depth squats will allow you to build strength in your weaker point; the qauds … i have same thing going will give these a go
That is the best looking high squat I’ve ever seen
Looks like good depth to me
High?
Those look very good to me!!!!
Those are deep
That's not even shallow though. Clearly below parallel. I can guarantee anyone saying it's shallow doesn't squat as much as this dude
You’re blind that’s not below parallel
Now we've sorted your squat depth out, my question is how do you make your skin so nice?
There was nothing wrong with those squats. The narrow knees forward stance biases towards quads which I think was a deliberate choice.
Ilya 4 ever
I did the same, injured hamstring tendon and hte only way to squat was to excecissevly push knees forwards to focus on quads. I couldnt go below parallel but i'd argue my rom was greater anywya.
just do 50% pause squats. if you cant drop all the way do slow decent squats and pause at your lowest then explode up from the squat. thats how I got lower in my squats.
On blast
Looks like depth to me
Candito squats high in training and deep in comp
Pretty sure that's legal depth in competitions and imo you should lower the weight and hit full depth even if the weight is drastically lighter than you could normally squat with this depth just to get the range of motion stronger
If you want to bring up your legs you should bring the knees as much forward as possible WHILE also going as low as possible with good technique. It sounds like you are doing the first part, but for some reason decided to skip the other part. Love your guys content by the way, just a thought from a bodybuilder.
i have weak quads and strong back too! 🎉
Not a power lifter - but Ilya squatted high.
I feel like for your limb length thats pretty deep honestly especially since you are seeking to improve quad strength.
WHAT THOSE ARE HIGH?!?! IT LOOKS BELOW PARALLEL.. some people gotta find ANYTHING, I MEAN ANYTHING!
"What powerlifter squats high in training?"
Isn't John Haack famous for doing that
Im still confused. If you’re trying to get your knees forward and focus on the quads why not just do front squats?
Difficult to hammer the volume on them without the upper back strength/endurance being the main limiting factor
Front squats don’t drive up back squat numbers.
@@jackemarleeyoung They do if you don't back squat 😈
@@BO2Letsplay lol I wonder how much quad strength is gained just from front squats alone
@@jackemarleeyoung Probably a decent amount, but not much in comparison to using them as an accessory for back squats
Answer: Ray Williams
Get yourself a safety squat bar to hit those quads, brother
Think there's more potential for depth, but it's at about parallel.
The squats looked fine to me
... Yeah, I'm not sure what is wrong with your depth or the overall squat... Good set is my call big man.
Those are high squats?! Holy fucking shit what planet are we on?
I expected your squat depth due to femur length, so I don't understand why people are complaining as going full length will cause knee pain.
For you anyways 🤷🏻♂️ or anyone with long femurs
Lol it won't cause knee pain
Spuuuuud😂
Just do full rom with less weight, full rom builds more muscle
Those squats look perfect!?
Why not front squat?
Looks like atg for quarter squatters
Decent squats them.
Long femur curse lol
Those squats are lower than mine
Thats the most cope mental gymnastics ever to justify squatting high. Deep stretch and deep ROM on squats UNDENIABLY cause more quad growth and more quad activation.
Front squats bro. It will help with depth and quad strength.
Nobody has won the Pop Quiz yet!...
Who cares about powerlifting though, the only deadlift I care about is the Li Dayin, Yang Zhe deadlift to overhead.
Ray Williams
Man, I want to know the answer to this question.
Didnt hear question, got distracted by triceps
Ilya Ilin obviously
Not high. Those are normal non weightlifting squats my dude.
The people that always talk the most crap usually don’t look good, not strong, and not big.
Wait what?? That is absollutely a full squat, what are you talking about?
Those squats arent too bad
Powerlifters squat higher than that
Tbh I still don’t fully get it! Does that mean quads are emphasised more in that particular ROM? Should I be doing ‘half squats’ as well as full atg squats? (It took me ages to develop good atg squats…). I is well confused 🤔
It is less to do with ROM and more to do with mobility/positioning. Knees forward biases the quad, whereas knees out or sitting back changes the loading more toward the posterior chain. He could squat deeper if he sat back or more into his hips but that would lose the quad bias. Since he doesn't have gurph's morphology/mobility send the knees forward and achieving deep depth is more difficult. Hope that helps
There is a benefit to both
@@charlesmulliner thanks for the comment, that does help 👍
Exactly Charles!
The quads are emphasized with more ROM, do front squats instead of what this guy is doing if you want to let the knees travel forward and still get full ROM
Those are parallel squats lol
Wait wait wait are you saying the Squats you just showed in the video are bad??? Those are below depth... as long as your legs are 90 degrees
Thats like right on if not 1 inch off powerlifting comp depth th3se idiots hating are unreal 😂
At least you squat
Lol those are high squats, I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing then cause mine look the same.
passable powerlifting squat
In what world is 200kg high bar for reps bad? Lol 😅 people are living in dreamland in the comments
Malinachev no ?
Man I'm sure the people talking shit can atg a perfect 120kg full depth no wraps no belt.
What high squats? That’s lowest high squat I’ve ever seen!
Wtf those are not shallow squats at all ,,, so wtf should we say about Mirco Zanni or Martin Robu,,, well probably they don't understand squats,,, YeS SuRe THinG
Fuller ROM = more hypertrophy = more quad gains. Lesser ROM = less gains
He's just tryna get a stronger squat, more weight means more weight, its not like hes doing quarters
Hypertrophy is only one of several adaptions needed for strength training. Neurology attenuation, antagonist coactivation, technical position reinforcing and past training evidence for this scenario has shown it works well for him.
@@sikastrength you are 100% correct. My logic here is, if your doing the squat, going to full depth is such a low hanging fruit, might as well. Also, wouldn't full ROM achieve all of the above in addition to more hypertrophy?
They aren’t that high!
Dude just start ass to grass and flexibility with barely any weight.
Definitely not even high squats, more than depth
Hey guys, this might be worth checking out: th-cam.com/video/c90y7RQo_lQ/w-d-xo.html Mike Isreatel had a guest on recently explaining that new research came out about partial reps but the REVERSE portion of the rep (lengthened muscle under tension being actually way more effective). I know this is primary for hypertrophy but it might have some good carry-over to strength as well.
Powerlifters squats high in training to get used to heavier weights which in turn make competition weight lighter
That's not that high.
