  • Netball makes history in Mooiuitsig
BETTY'S BAY - The netball day held here in the neighbourhood of Mooiuitsig on Saturday (29 October 2022) not only caused great excitement, but was also a historic breakthrough for this poor community.
It was the first time ever that an organized sporting event took place here.
Netball teams from Bosmanskloof (Greyton), Genadendal, Grabouw and Kleinmond came to Betty's Bay to show colour and enthusiasm. "Seeing is believing," according to one of the organizers, Mervin Jooste, and by the end of the day, the majority of the community was around the rink to provide support and incentive for the players.
One of the Kleinmond visitors expressed the hope that more such gatherings would be held. "One of these days the rugby season is shattering yen then there's no longer anything to keep the youth busy," she said.
Chairman of the Mooiuitsig netball club, Rita Griffiths, after delays, set proceedings in motion shortly before eleven with her word of welcome. " When you bake a cake for the first time, don't expect a perfect cake," she said.
Councillor Els, however, assured her that the Overstrand Municipality is proud of Mooiuitsig and the community's organising skills. Nice view is a beautiful place with its location between mountain and sea. In addition, the visitors are having a great day on Betty's Bay, which is notorious for its wind, she added.
When Theresa mentioned that netball was close to her heart and that she was also a referee - she was involved in this capacity.
The first game of the day was between the "little ones" of Mooiuitsig and Genadendal and already in this game one could observe that there is great talent that needs to be developed.
By the end of the day, the results of the matches were irrelevant, but certificates and medals, for the B teams and the A teams respectively, were allocated to the best players and teams and handed over by Councillor Els.
Kleinmond was the best A team and Bosmanskloof (Greyton) the best B team of the day. Kleinmond players receiving medals were Faith Marinus (attacking goalscorer), Lee-Shanay K. Arelse and Zayrin Stellenberg (centre).
Mooiuitsig team is not medalless at home: Anneke Sias was the top goalscorer and Jody Rudolph the best centre. Tamzan Arendse het received a certificate as best centre of the B teams.
Llowellon Arendse, chairman of Overberg Netball, said in the closing message that it was a nice day and that there was a lot of talent on display. However, it worries him that the clubs, with the exception of Kleinmond, are not yet affiliated with the formal netballstructures.
He encouraged them to do this as soon as possible so that the players can have an opportunity to move up to higher levels... In the Western Cape, development teams are selected to compete at district level. Clubs can also be assisted by the department with transport costs, development and dress codes.
Rita Griffiths expressed gratitude to the municipality for preparing the site and installing new standard poles, Willem Viljoen van Ols butchery for sk enking sausage, Penguins School for making seats available, Councillor Theresa Els for the moral support and the Overstrand Herald for publicity
