My dad was one of the RAF pilots that flew them, beautiful plane. He was so proud to have flown them in formation we still have the Photo of all ten of them in the air at the same time.

Always loved the huge Belfast, as a young lad I used to watch them on their maiden flights out of Belfast Sydenham airfield. Over the years have been on board quite a few of them at various airports. Just two left, Cairns and Cosford.

Wow! Now THAT is a real workhorse. Built strong! Also, just to realize how much time has passed, there were no smart phones to speak of yet (everyone was still using those Nokia flip phones) and there was no wireless internet accessible to everyone. Time marches on as they say.

When Heavy Lift acquired the aircraft from the RAF in the 1970's I had the job of moving g the spare props from RAF Quedgley to Southend Airport, Sat on a low-loader trailer, they were 15 feet high. I did 6 loads in all in a week. Monday - Saturday. On arrival at Southend, I unloaded in the hangar where the Belfasts were stored. I could drive under the wing despite the height of my load.

Only two survive out of ten constructed. After the Armenian earthquake, Britain donated some JCBs and Heavylift had to transport them with a Belfast because the tiny cramped RAF C130 couldn't even accommodate them never mind carry them!
Enceladus was still outside when I trained at Cosford a year after its arrival. We stood on the internal balcony and looked down upon an internal load area that could have accommodated most of a cricket pitch. A sensation not repeated until seeing inside the AN-22. Imagine if this had been equipped with contra-rotating props, slightly swept wings and... WOW!
As for this aircraft - 'Hector', I wish I had the money to return him to airworthiness and bring him back home - even if I had to learn to fly and do it myself. Doubtless there'd be a serious fight for the privilege though, Ha ha ha. Maybe enlist its last crew too if they wanted to participate.
