    That was incredible.
    I know nothing about aircraft apart from them having 2 wings, wheels, engines, a cabin and a cockpit.
    The Captain and his female copilot in this particular cockpit awakened my awareness of what true professionalism is.
    The amount of technology that the modern day pilots live with is, to me, bewildering.
    This crew handled their challenges with confidence, calmness and even humour.

      NDB??? I haven’t shot an NDB approach in years. As a matter of fact my airplane, 787, doesn’t even have any selection for NDB.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bullwinklejmoos Small, turboprop airplanes often have to fly into small airports at high latitudes where NDB is the only way in. To date, no civilian airport in Greenland has ILS, so even the A330 has to come in on NDB/GPS. They’re working on modernizing many airports in Greenland and ILS is going to be added to some of them (Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq.)

    • @bullwinklejmoos
      @bullwinklejmoos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@afcgeo882 I was being facetious. I know there are places where NDB plays a role, but quite a few countries have decommissioned their NDB approaches and I don’t think that student pilots are being taught how to shoot one. But even the NDB/GPS approach on the A330 is not a real NDB approach because you are using GPS positioning to fly what is in the Nav database. The approach being flown by the Dash8 would however represent the original NDB style approach. Wouldn’t it be more economical though for Greenland to implement RNP/AR approaches instead of going with ILS?

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bullwinklejmoos RNP AR approaches would be too difficult in Greenland because of constant mountains, cliffs and other obstacles. It’s typical there to do a steep approach using NDB and GPS (they did use both here) and then land visually, under the low cloud cover.

    I am also impressed and gratified to witness crew resource management. With both pilot flying and pilot monitoring having hands on the throttles at takeoff speaks volumes about the flight crew. Congratulations to the airline for your training and to the skill and professionalism of both pilots on this flight. The 'geese' flying behind you can fly in comfort.

    Great video ! Very nice crew coordination. The Dash 8 is an absolutely fantastic plane to fly, and this 200 is the only variant I haven't flown. It's a 100 with the same engines as the larger 300 and great for short runways...lots of fun :) This is the first time I have seen the Universal Avionics upgraded flight displays ! I wish they were around when I was on the Dash - I prefer the Universal FMS and displays to what we have on the 737. Much more user friendly and ergonomic. Flying in the Caribbean is very similar to what these guys are doing (except for the winter weather conditions of course). At least 5 destinations we had were only NDB approaches and were flown conventionally without FMS.

    Once when doing touch-n-goes in 172 at KCOS, I had a 737 coming in behind me so was cleared for a low approach. When I pushed in the throttle, the engine sputtered and died! I told tower I had lost engine and landed with no power. I was unable to totally clear the runway. I heard tower say go-around and all I thought of was "I can't go-around my engine died." Then I heard a very loud noise, as the 737's engines spooled up and they did a go-around. I was able to restart engine and clear the runway.
    I am very proud of my accomplishment! How many people can say they made a 737 do a go-around?

    What an outstanding flight video! Thank you.
    I used to think golf was the best TV for napping. These long flight videos are much better, they remind me of the flights we took when I was a kid. The sound of the Constellation props always put me to sleep.

    If all you got is a NDB approach, no reason to go there. An air carrier should have at minimum GPS approach procedures at all destinations points.
