    Due to some frustrating weather woes, we had to delay the door install for another day. But, we still made due with some upstairs updating and a little impromptu outside tour of projects to come. And speaking of that, we could use your help! Let us know if you have any ideas on what to plant along the retaining wall to disguise it a little better. Stay tuned for more updates as we round out summer and head into fall (and we cannot wait!). -T&R

    Only because Rob commented that he didn't care for the retaining wall (which i like), one among several ideas is suggested.
    1st. Paint the retaining wall a forest green.
    2nd. Plant ground cover flowering vines along the top of the wall.
    3rd. In Monterey, CA. the city public work crew planted crawling pink flowering ice plants. It's very decorative. But the color is too feminine for my taste.
    4th. My suggestion is the hardy yellow & orange Trumpet vine. Other pleasant vines are the violet & white Wisteria, the crawling white with a yellow center (looks like a Daisy) Lantana evita, or the breathtaking white crawling Bougainvillea.

    • @toddandrob
      @toddandrob  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great recommendations! Thank you. We're still trying to figure out exactly what we want along that wall. Although we're running out of time with the growing season here, so it may have to wait until spring.

    Climbing roses would look great along retaining wall. Or lantana

    • @toddandrob
      @toddandrob  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great ideas! The lantanas we have are slow growing here, oddly enough. And the ones we planted last year were no hardy enough to stand some of the more frigid temps we had over the winter. But climbing roses would be a nice touch!

    • @marktitus8516

    For the concrete pillar... it could support a sculpture of some sort ( animal, figural or abstract), or hold a large decorative planter.
    The retaining wall.. plant a mixture azaleas, boxwoods , kalmias, rhododendrons , etc as the backdrop, with shorter plants, bulbs in front.

    • @toddandrob

    Guys, I don't much care what you're up to, I just want a ringside seat to watch the shenanigans transpire. "Riveting," as Todd so aptly put it. I enjoyed the mini retrospective on your projects. The contrast between before and after really brought home the transformation you've accomplished. The garden is looking good. Before removing the brick stand, you need to investigate. I wonder if it is there to hide a shut-off valve or similar? In the meantime, you can spruce it up with a color concrete stucco and put a statue on top or an Urn planter.
    Wally is one very lucky boy.
    The paint and shelf look great.❤

    • @toddandrob
      @toddandrob  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nothing like a rainy day inside doing things you've put off. It's so peaceful up there. When you were outside and the birds were chirping away, I felt like I was there and it was so relaxing (since I have my ear plugs in)! The plants look so happy and healthy. That block thingee at the front door.....just paint it to match the house (?) and put a huge plant on it that cascades down all around it (something that would live year round). Does it/did it have any electric to it? Maybe used to be a lamp post or other lighting feature? You always ask but you'll figure out something on your own. Can't wait for the door install!

    • @toddandrob
      @toddandrob  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We haven't noticed any electrical on it (the cord that was in the shot was from our lights that we added for the hill). But that is a good idea for sure. Glad you enjoyed the birds! As we were editing it, I kept hearing them in the background (also with headphones on) and thought it was so peaceful too. Couldn't resist and had to keep those clips in there. 🧑🏼‍🎤

    Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and time with us. You have done an amazing work of art on your property. Have you looked into the stone and the roof for poss damage as you showed damage to the door frame area. Also, a suggestion for the back door area since you have that pilar there, research what you can find on the property plans and history, if can't find out why perhaps just start a deck extension tying into the current.

    I loved "choose your own adventure" books, and made sure I found all the good and bad results. You need to invite Brian Monahan to help out so it doesn't rain. You're probably going to have more rain with tropical storm (soon to be hurricane) Debby bringing more water inland.

    Retaining wall: pressure wash and apply "spray cork" (with color tint). Choose the right color to blend into the hillside earth tones).
    Spray cork will have a natural look plus seal the garden block to help prevent erosion. It will last a long time: used on exterior of homes a lot.

    I see someone already suggested a lighting fixture on top of the concrete pillar. That thought also crossed my mind as well as possibly turning it into a pedestal for a large urn style planter. I would first to it off with a larger slab of cement that is about an inch and a half to 2" thick and overhanging the pillar by around an inch or 2. I love your wall. There's a lot of potential there. Whatever you decide to do with the pillar could be carried over across the top of the wall at equal intervals of 8'-10'. Along the top edge of the wall, you could plant creeping thyme and/ or phlox as well a some Japanese garden juniper. I would personally keep your plantings along the bottom of the wall low for the most part. Tall plants in my opinion would make it look overgrown.

    Hey you two and Wally
    Looks great guys love it all...as for the retaining wall you could reface it with sandstone or encase it with wire and line it with river rocks or plant some trailing plants along the top so they eventually hang over, be the cheapest way to go l guess...the cement block pillar dare l say a statue of David as a water feature 😉 or maybe a large shallow pot of some kind for a bird bath or Rob you could turn your hands to create some master piece. The shelving lights look fantastic love the black and white photo of you both...infact l love everything you have done.

    I was thinking about that cement piller out the back door and maybe you could paint it, dark green OR black and then put a large pot on it with a viney, type of plant in it, that would look really good. Just a thought 🤔
    Also, while Todd was lighting up those shelves, before, you even mentioned it, i thought to myself, WOW, that would look like a really cool space for Halloween stuff. 👻
    Your place is absolutely beautiful, what a neat place to unwind, create and relax too.
    Many many Blessings to you both,
    Laurel ❤❤

      Yep, definitely along the lines of what we were thinking too, with painting it or at least disguising it. And then some plant that cascades down. That would make it really change that view completely. Thanks for the kind words! It's fun seeing how much this place has changed over the years.

    I'll just sit here on that shelf as a covering spot spot so don't mind me except that cubby beneath me!!
    That cement column may lead to a secret shelter for double knot spies!
    Climbing Blue Sprice still good for zone 7 & that there retaining wall!!
    Vote for gravel that matches slate color for continuity with the uniqueverse of Todd & Rob!

    Thanks for sharing…Home Depot has a diy kit for you stairs, red oak ( real wood), about $70 dollars per stair step, not difficult to install, and you can stain any color or be creative and make your own, or use flat flag stone pavers to cover your stairs, endless possibilities…outside retaining wall, use stone pavers to cover the flat concrete, you can “ stain” the wall with a wood color stain or some color you like? Do a test block first, honeysuckle, vinca, morning glory are a few vines that will drape over the wall…you can hide some of the retaining wall by putting up a partial wood fence, only requires 2 or 3 post for 8 foot section, possibilities are endless, get CREATIVE😊😊😊😊

      @toddandrob  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can say that again... possibilities sure are endless. Thanks for the recommendations, especially on the DiY stair replacement options. We are excited to finally figure out that project eventually. And morning glory or honeysuckle would look perfect on the retaining wall too. 👍

    You can plant some climbing vine plants like climbing jasmine maybe? That will disguise the wall and look beautiful. Stay away from ivy because it will grow out of control!

      Oddly enough, we tried jasmine last year in a spot along the wall and it has been growing ever-so-slowly. Although it did bloom this spring and was nice.

    So a new routine for the boyfriend and I is we watch one video of yours together one night per week…. He wants to stretch it out. Confession time though I basically watch one every lunch break at work and if I re watch them with him it’s a bonus. He said to me a few minutes ago hey babe I’m gonna take my shower then we can snuggle and watch Todd and Rob. We love your videos and are getting some great ideas for sprucing up our place.

    Is Telluride Bluegrass Festival better than the Dillard Bluegrass Festival? At least Dillard Bluegrass Festival is local - went both days this year.

    Your plants are thriving! I see your Creeping Jenny has done quite well. As the Grim Reaper of plants, I succeeded in killing all of mine in the gardens. Regarding you wall that rises uo like a pillar...have you considered adding a piece of tall statuary atop it?

    • @toddandrob
      @toddandrob  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If there's one thing that grows well here, it's creeping jenny. It even survived and came back after winter, which was surprising. And good recommendation, we hadn't thought of that yet.

    Years ago at the time we had a new kitchen installed, in a hidden area, we put in a time capsule that would make it clear that we were a gay married couple. Hopefully, in the far-off future, someone will find it, surprise, surprise surprise !! We had just said that you should make a time capsule under your bottom shelf, then a second later you said something about making a time capsule. Great gay minds thinking alike !!!

    I don’t think you should try removing that retaining wall. Might prove too disastrous given the hill it seems to be holding in place. With the mild earthquakes the East Coast has been experiencing over the past few years, no telling how much of that hill may have been disturbed already.
    I like the brick used on the retaining wall, it has a bit of character to me. But you are looking close up and surely see it differently.
    Having said that, maybe you could build something in front of and around the wall. So your idea to cover it up works. A different type of brick for instance. A really big project however. Its just one suggestion.
    While I’m here, how are you guys going to travel up and down that mountain safely if there’s lots of snow? Weather patterns are changing, even in GA. Hope you are not climate deniers, never know.

    • @toddandrob
      @toddandrob  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We're all about the weather here, and yep, climate change is up on us all. So far, our 2 winters here have been fairly mild with only an occasional few days of very frigid temps. And we haven't had any snow minus a few flurries. We have some backup plans if we ever do get a good snowstorm, however. Our vehicle is all wheel drive as well. Thanks for the recs on the wall. I think we'll be leaving it in place for sure. And we're leaning towards some low growing evergreens to start with. Cheers 👍

    Hey buddy dudes! Wanted to pass on info about blue cypress tree
    Around these parts TX there are two varieties available.
    Carolina blue cypress and Arizona Ice blue cypress.
    The Arizona does have a nice blue except it is rather prone to fungus issues especially now when climate change has increased fungus in the environment and unless catched in time the tree dies
    Arizona may need closer monitoring to watch for browning on branches normally begin closer to trunk
    Aaaanuway fungus sensitivity is now another consideration for planting choices and using well drainage conglomerates of soil and water egress and thinning branches to increase air circulation
    Aaaanyway Wally would tell ya'll the same❤
