This movie is actually an extremely faithful adaptation of the original novel. A few minor changes to streamline the narrative and it omits a small subplot involving Jack Crawford’s wife dying of a terminal illness, but otherwise it follows the book very closely. Most of the dialogue, especially between Lecter and Clarice, is lifted word-for-word from the book.
Clarice chased Buffalo Bill on her own because she knew from her research on him that if she waited for back up to arrive, Catherine would end up dead. The back up would've been fast in coming, but not fast enough and Clarice knew this which is why she did what she did. The book explains it better

Subtle thing: whenever someone is talking to Clarice, they're looking directly into the camera at the audience. In the reverse shots Jodie Foster is looking slightly off camera. This was intended to get into your head and make you, the audience, subconsciously "become" Clarice.
Which explains the funeral home scene in which all the policemen in the room seem to be staring at her. It's all in Clarice's head as she is feeling very nervous and insecure.
Just realized that director Demme does the exact same trick in Philadelphia and The Manchurian Candidate remake. Kooky.
Well it's meant to reflect "a male gaze". That she's an female FBI but she is/feels she is being objectified by men and other agents until she proves herself. Added bonus, is it creates 'dis-ease' in the viewer because we rarely see acting-into-lens.
And Lecter looks away when she's reminiscing about her childhood, because psychiatrists do that to put people at ease. Easier to speak without the eye contact.
Funny that I read this comment as Clarise and Crawford are in the car and your comment does not ring true.

Manhunter is easily the equal to Silence of the Lambs. It's remake, Red Dragon, however, doesn't come close.
@@porflepopnecker4376 Its not really a "remake" per-se. Its more of a re-adaptation of the original book, and to be honest, it's a lot more faithful to the source.
With that said, I prefer Manhunter. It's not as faithful but it's just... Frickin' Michael Mann. Need I say more? The atmosphere in that movie was amazing. It felt like a Miami Vice episode, and I mean that in the most loving and respectful way possible.
I love Hannibal. He's an intelligent man, a man of sophistication and culture. And yet despite being a cannibal, he still has morals. I mean from our point of view he has no morals of course, but he does have his own set of rules.
But he still breaks his own rules, just like a psychopath.. Like when he lays Clarice bare with the screaming of the lambs, yet with a wry, devilish grin he refuses to give Billy up.. Breaking the quid pro quo..

Not directly, but through clues in the case file.. The rules of quid pro quo are you go, then I go, tit for tat.. Clarice started, meaning Lecter should have ended and given up the name of Buffalo Bill.. Whom he knew..

She gave him information about her personal life, meanwhile he gave her information to save a life, stop a deranged serial murderer, and advance her career. And he did give him initially false hopes for better incarceration conditions (although I dont remember her knowing they were false).
@@jacobjones5269 Chilton was still there and could have been listening to their conversations. Which Hannibal knew he had done before (because he knew about the fake offer). He pointed at Bill for Clarice, led her right to him, knowing she would be smart enough to figure it all out. And instead of saving the girl for Clarice, he let her save the girl herself, figure it out herself after he gave the hints. So the lambs would stop screaming in her head. Because he knew Clarice would save her. He knew she was good enough to do it. He wanted her to do it. And she did.
Brave Clarice… You will tell me know when those lambs stop screaming?…

Tim: "How does he know about all this outside stuff when he's inside?" Lecter, at the same time, spoken over by Tim's remark: "Do you know why he's called Buffalo Bill? The newspapers don't say".
This movie has some of the most chilling cinematics of all time. You don’t want to see, but you can’t turn away.
Even the Hannibal hasn’t much screen-time, he’s still cool. (technically he’s not the main antagonist)
In some ways, he's an ally to the protagonist.
Most people reference Hannibal more than Buffalo Bill, which shows how badass and memorable Sir Anthony Hopkins performance was
He's a tritagonist. He has good and bad qualities.
This movie is definitely one of the greatest of all times, and it swept the main categories at the Oscars, winning Best Female - Drama, Best Male - Drama, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay - Adaptation, among others. Anthony Hopkins won Best Male Drama with only 16 minutes of screen time, that is perhaps the most impressive performance of all time.
The 3rd and most recent film to win the big five Academy Awards: Picture, Director, Screenplay, Lead Actor, Lead Actress. A cinematic masterpiece.
Important to note, there are 2 screenplay categories.. Original and adapted from another medium.. This film won Best Adapted Screenplay, from the original novel by Thomas Harris..
1. This thing snagged all 5 of the big OSCARS
2. IRL you're wasting your time trying to pick that up. She doesn't do men.
3. Lt. Boyle also played "Murdock I'm commin' to get you". Rambo II
4. Ted Levine actually got death threats for the performance he did playing Buffalo Bill.
5. The FBI actually let them use Quantico.
6. The lisping following "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." was ad lib
to see if she would freak out. It was the first scene thy did together and it worked.
A man named Hinkley probably had to rethink some of his life decisions considering 2.
Kind of a shame about that number though. Always thought she was cute.
A master class of psychological thrillers! The most horrifying thing about this film is that there are people like this out there...

Love this movie. Tim was such a big brain in this reaction too, figuring things like Buffalo Bill's motive out before the movie even spelt it out. More grown-up movie reactions for Halloween month please. XD
Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill) also played creeps in "Betrayed" (1988) and some other notable movies.
On the non-creepy/positive side, he was Capt. Stottlemeyer, Monk's supervisor, on the TV show "Monk" (2002-2009).
Hannibal Lecter and Anton Chigurh ( No country for old men ) are the hardest villians ever^^ ☠
And Silence of the lambs is one of the best thrillers i`ve ever seen on screen! 😎 Sir Anthony Hopkins is a true genius.
Check out Manhunter, it’s the unofficial prequel to this movie directed by Michael Mann. It was remade years later as Red Dragon but Manhunter is awesome.👍
This is the unofficial sequel to Manhunter.
Yes, Red Dragon is a pathetic failure next to the great Manhunter.
But once everyone identified Hopkins as Lecter, that tended to make Manhunter obsolete. That's presumably why they remade it... so there'd be a complete Hopkins trilogy.
If she bugs out and calls for backup, the killer can murder the hostage while she's waiting.
Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for this movie. this year he won the Oscar again thanks to the movie "the father" (highly recommended)
When Clarice asked the cat what he knows about Buffalo Bill the cat refused to answer by saying "Meow" which means "I'm not a rat" in cat language.
Love this movie, Hannibal is iconic.

Yeah, Hannibal treats Clarice badly at first because his intellect makes him think everyone is inferior. But she gains his respect quickly, no small feat! And Barney the orderly, he doesn't look down on her, cool guy. Every other dude, her boss and the other officers included, Slimy...

Lecter is from Mexico, as many villians now are... in 1959, Alfredo Ballí Treviño, a young doctor from the city of Monterrey, Mexico, murdered a 20-year-old medical student in his office. His name was in the local newspapers causing terror among those who lived there. And by pure chance it was the inspiration to create one of the most successful characters in Hollywood: Hannibal Lecter.
This acting in this movie was just astonishing.
Wow! First “Train to Busan” and now this classic! October is looking freaking great! I can not say anything anymore about Jodie and Anthony but, Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill was absolutely amazing and terrifying! 👍🏼
Liver, fava and chianti are all foods that cannot be mixed with anti-psychotic drugs (the sort of thing you'd use to try to treat a psychopath). In his first scene, Ledger is openly bragging "I AM OFF MY MEDS."

Thanks, Timothee! 🐑 I love this one... got to see it in an advanced screening in New Orleans the night before it opened wide. The audience was very enthusiastic (which always makes a movie more enjoyable). Aside from that, the story and performances are top-notch. I also love *all* the sequels, prequels and even the HANNIBAL (2013) tv series (which had exquisite art design). The CLARICE series from earlier this year was pretty good, too.
He was having that guy literally for dinner. ;)
It's weird how Buffalo Bill and Hannibal are both horrific serial killers (Hannibal is a cannibal), yet somehow we find a way to almost root for Hannibal in his escape. Even in our horror and disgust at what he's done, we almost admire and have a strange fascination for his genius and cleverness. He's still obviously a disgusting, dangerous psychopath, but it's interesting how the different portrayals of each character leave a different impression of both men, who are both undoubtedly equally terrible, but somehow Hannibal has earned the tiniest bit of sympathy, while Buffalo Bill has earned very little.
Fun fact: When Jodie Foster was 14, she appeared in the movie Taxi Driver. Some dude was so impressed, and became so obsessed with her, that he tried to assasinate President Ronald Regan to impress her.

I'd highly highly recommend Red Dragon. A prequel to this and with an amazing cast. It tells the same story as Manhunter, which I also enjoyed, but Red Dragon is just my favorite telling of how Hannibal was caught and I LOVE the cast. Trying not to disrespect Manhunter here. 😊

I saw this movie with my mom when I was nine, my mom thought is was a crime drama. Walking out of the theater the only question about the movie was " mom what's a c@#t" everyone laughed around us.
The TV show Hannibal is phenomenal.
Did you know this won best picture at the Oscars and was up against Beauty and the Beast. Which is the only animated movie to be nominated for best picture and after that an animated category was created
In the scene starting at about 19:42, when Clarice is being taken from Hannibal’s room by the cops/feds: the guy with the beard is George Romero. In the award scene near the end, the presenter is Roger Corman.

"Mindhunters" is a good movie, about FBI agents trying to figure out which one of them is a serial killer. One of those movies, when you know the ending, you need to watch again to catch all the little clues.
Except if you pay attention it gives away the answer half-way through the movie.
@@bad-people6510 Yes, but you usually don't notice the clues until second viewing.
This was partly inspired by when the FBI got serial killer Ted Bundy to create a profile for the green river killer and when he was finally caught Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The part in the movie where bill is struggling with the furniture was also inspired by Bundy who would fake having a broken arm and struggle to get something in his car to get the woman he wanted ti help him and when she did he would hit her over the head and push her in his car.

It's a toss up between this and Shawshank Redemption for my most watched movie, and therefore two of my absolute favorites.
I remember a long time ago I stumbled on the last 20-25 minutes of this movie and it stressed me out, even though I didn't know the details or the full context of the movie. About a year ago I watched the whole movie and even though I already knew the ending, the second time watching it, I was STILL just as stressed, if not more, in the last 20 minutes. It really grips you and gets your full attention. Great movie!

Seeing how much you enjoyed this makes me wish there was a bunch of Jonathan Demme films to recommend you, but somehow, as competent and accomplished as Demme was, he doesn’t have a bunch of big, iconic, reaction-friendly classics on his resume. The closest movies I can think of are Manchurian Candidate, a political thriller starring Denzel Washington, and Philadelphia, a courtroom drama that won Tom Hanks the Best Actor Oscar and also features Denzel. Another notable thing Demme did that is very TH-cam-friendly is the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, which is maybe the most entertaining and unique concert film ever made, and essential viewing even for people who don’t care for concert films or the Talking Heads. The rest of Demme’s career is mostly more intimate films that only old-school film buffs know or care about.
Silence of the Lambs is obviously old, having come out thirty years ago, but there are some things about the way it was filmed that remind me of even older eras. It feels more like a 70’s/80’s movie than a 90’s movie, so it’s refreshing to see it popping up on reaction channels and resonating so strongly with people who mostly watch the big franchises of this century. Obviously a great movie is a great movie no matter when it was made or when it is watched, but as I’m hitting my thirties I find myself becoming disillusioned and maybe a bit cranky about the state of modern blockbusters in Hollywood. It’s cool to see that something like Silence of the Lambs, which I think is old-fashioned even for the time it came out, is still a banger in the eyes of younger generations.

Hey fun fact Buffalo Bill was actually based on the grave robber and double (possible triple) murderer Ed Gein who also inspired the story of “the Texas chainsaw massacre” and also is the inspiration for the killer in “psycho”
This was so great with the reactions and commentary.... really enjoyed this a lot . Watching you piece it together made it a bit more intense ; I have seen Silence of The Lambs many times.... even at 3am. I study criminology and narcissistic behavior so this film is right up my alley ; I didn't make it into the FBI like Clarice but I admire the courage it takes for those who are there . The research and studying on the subject is interesting to me but the field work it takes to get cases solved.... I will have to leave that up to people that do not mind seeing dead people. I feel for the victims and their families in every case I study . As dark as a topic as this film is your reactions and comments really did add to liking this film even more . Thank you Tim
Dr Hannibal Lecter is actually an aristocrat a son of Lithuanian count. His parents got slaughtered by Nazies and later Russians ate his little sister Misha durin WWII. Hannibal'¨s early age was very dramatic and that's why he is messed up with his head but otherwise he is highly intelligent and studied to be a psychiatric he used to work for the police earlier and help Will Craham to catch The red Dragon another serial killer in second book Red Dragon. There are four Hannibal book s by Thomas Harris : Hannibal Rising. Red Dragon. Silent of Lambs and Hannibal.

I wanted to do three jobs growing up.
Crime scene clean up.
Mortician.
Autopsies.
The local funeral home director even offered to pay to get me a degree so I could take over his funeral home when he retired. The body is fascinating. I never took him up on the offer though. Once my grandfather died, I could no longer handle going to funerals. The empathy I had was way to much before my grandfathers death, but it became worse after it.
Empathy is great of course to have as a human. But it's not easy to deal with.
If you do ever watch the other films in this universe I would recommend Manhunter(1986) over Red Dragon(2002) they are both based on the same novel (Red Dragon) but I feel the Michael Mann vehicle is the better film.
Jodi Foster was so good in this movie.

16:34 in the book you sorta go into Hannibal's thought process here. These cops think cause they're bigger and there's enough of them they can handle him. But he's clever and he's got the pen.

Recommend - "Tucker and Dale vs Evil", "Death Becomes Her", "Village of the Damned", "Omen 1-3".
At least noawdays police works in pairs, so that you have immediate backup. She should not have survived the encounter in the dark. He had goggles and a weapon but for some plot reason he is dead in the end.
Man this was such a good reaction. It’s a testament to Jonathan Demme’s masterful skills as a director when you find yourself on the absolute edge of your seat. RIP John Demme, he had such an extensive, incredible career.
This movie is a true classic. So many modern horror films borrow tropes that originate in this movie.

I'm a big Sir Anthony fan, Hannibal best role ever. You have to watch the other movies to see the creation and evolution of Hannibal. In order..Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, Silence Of The Lambs( watched) then last Hannibal. New subbie really enjoyed your reaction.
