    If you understood norwegian, you’d actually be clued in early that the dog wasn’t a dog. The guy shooting at it was yelling something along the lines of “Get away from it! It’s not a dog, it’s a thing! It’s imitating a dog!”

    Wilford Brimley who plays Blair (the scientist who goes crazy and eventually gets infected) was a former cowboy and very strong for his age, not just in the movie. He was also the only actor who didn’t get physically ill during the autopsy scenes as he was used to butchering animals (they used real animal organs.)

    Answers to your questions : Why the recreational items?
    To pass time when you're stuck for months doing research in an otherwise uninhabitable climate with no way in or out.
    Why do you have all those dogs?
    Sledding.
    Why do you have a flamethrower?
    To melt ice quickly.

  • @DanielS2001
    @DanielS2001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    The reason why the outpost has a flamethrower is because it's used to thaw out large chunks of ice. In the short story that the film is based on, the flamethrower was used to thaw out airplane wings and even create makeshift runways for any incoming airplanes (the short was written in the 1950s IIRC, which helicopters didn't become common use until after that). If you ever need any more info in regards to the film, I'd advise checking out the fan site Outpost 31, which has tons of info, including a FAQs and even speculation on who was infected and at what time.

    • @codiak2680
      @codiak2680 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, the short story with the title "Who goes there?" was published in 1938 and written by John W. Campbell Jr. Under the pen name Don A. Stuart. 1951 was the year that the first adaptation, "The Thing From Another World" was released albeit it was a loose adaptation. Carpenter's flim is closer to the short story in many ways but has still visual influence from the 1951 flim as Carpenter has stated in various interviews it was one of his favorite movies growing up.

    They have a flamethrower to help clear snow and ice around the camp when needed. As to why they set the creature on fire and then put it out fairly soon after, they can't afford to let anything inside the compound burn for too long because it will catch the rest of the structure on fire and compromise the structure and that shelter is the only thing protecting them from the harsh elements outside.

    Blair was building that craft from the Ending of the Dog autopsy.. Pencil on thing then pencil in mouth = infection.. He chopped up the radio gear, and choppers for the parts. But to the humans in the camp, it looks like he is preventing them from leaving.. Blair is making sure they don't leave but he does.. Your correct it would take a long time to cut that hole in the ice, and to craft the ship. I think the Blair Thing was the best Camouflaged.. Him seemingly destroying the gear from our view, tricks us into thinking he has the best interest of the camp. = he needs the parts :(

    • @xen0bia
      @xen0bia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pen doesn't touch the corpse. It looks like it does because of the angle of the shot. And a doctor would not be this stupid careless to put foreign fluids in his mouth, come on... Also, why would Blair, as the thing, would bother running simulations to learn how the thing's cells work or what would be the outcome of it reaching the civilized world? Why would it care to know these things? No, Blair is infected at a later time off screen when he's left alone at the cabin. He destroyed the equipment because he knew from the simulation that the entire crew was doomed, being likely already partially infected, and knew the thing could not be allowed to escape. As for how it dug through to ice so quick, what makes you think it did it in Blair human form? We literally see it travel under the ice at full speed near the end as a monster thing. It probably did it this way, then reverted to Blair form to keep up the ruse.

    • @DubBossman1
      @DubBossman1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blair was infected that early on? I presumee that when he was locked outside, the Thing broke in and infected him, which was why the door was open. Has it been confirmed?

    • @lisamaitland157
      @lisamaitland157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DubBossman1 nothing in the movie is confirmed. Except who's room the Dog went in first. It was Childs and Palmers, this I knew right off the bat. When Childs pass the blood test I knew Palmer would not :(. plus you can see it on his face :).
      My evidence is when Mac looks into the Chopper the parts are missing [gutted out]. who cut them out? [ Blair did]. From what we know he kills the dogs, then got to the snow Vehicles first then the chopper. where he stashed this shit I have no clue, maybe dropped it in the snow. The creature spent a lot of time outside... Now it's more then possible, he was having help from Palmer to Assemble that craft. Minor help, Due to Palmer is around the men a lot. This is why I Focus on Blair being infected very Early on. This gives him, and us as the viewer to say~~ [ maybe he had enough time during the start to construct a tiny spaceship and dig a hole.]
      In the shack he does not have the time to do this, but before he does + shack time.. not to mention not enough time to dispose of all the Snow/rubble from digging the hole. This was the part of the movie that had me stumped, until I said to myself. If Blair was infect at or after the Dog autopsy, this might have given him the time needed to complete this.

    What makes this so high up on the best of alien contact films is they do not try to 'humanize' it with relatable human anatomy. It may takeover human bodies but does not truly manage them as a human. It is very fluid and malleable and can change to fit its situation. That's really the creep factor and horror of it.

    Awesome movie. Now you need to react to another two iconic horror movies from the 80's: A Nightmare on Elm Street(1984) and Hellraiser (1987).

    Thanks, Timothee! 👾 #TimotheeReacts This is a remake of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951). And there is a prequel to this one, which is decent... THE THING (2011). It literally ends with the helicopter chasing the dog, so you get to see what all went down at the other camp. #TheThing #JohnCarpenter
