Well hardly any games have this much development time. Besides maybe Bethesda games. But it doesn't show in games like fallout 4 that still felt mediocre and looked like it could've ran on the 360.
Summary: It’s been a long time coming but it’s eventually arrived and I have to say am loving it despite it’s flaws that I mentioned in the video. It’s a shame that Rockstar did not play test the controls enough, it sucks when Arthur suddenly jumps on to the rock he is standing behind during a gun fight or can’t loot an object easily, but aside from that the game is awesome. Did I finish the game? no, for that it would have taken me weeks, it’s not something I want to rush, I want to savour and enjoy the game but I have thrown about 40 hours at it and am only half way through. I always feel that reviewers should be honest about how much time they spend playing a game before they review it and sadly a few still hide this aspect from their viewers and still claim to have completed the game when it's clear from their footage they have played it a lot less than myself. I guess pushing out early reviews is more important than pushing out accurate ones to some people. The way to play this game is very slowly, you should savour the beautiful world, immerse yourself in the character that you create, I mean yes you have to play Arthur Morgan the gang member when you are doing the campaign but outside of that I am William Munny out of Missouri, killer of women and children and anything else that has walked or crawled on this earth ;) And you can do that (except the children bit) and although being a bad man has it's consequences such as a bounty on your head which will grow as you murder innocent people, it's great fun evading bounty hunters and dealing with witnesses. I just wish all AAA games had this level of passion poured into them, the sheer amount of content outside of the 60+ hour campaign is staggering, it’s more of a way of life than a game and well worth the money, even if you don’t particularly like Rockstar games.
Couldn't agree more IGN gave a 10 and haven't even played online yet. If your gonna review single player only then state it. As red dead online is part of the experience to give an honest review until you have also played that. Too many reviewers like the fake news wanna a narrative out first.

I'm on my 4th run through of this game, and I am still finding things that I have not found before. I even zoomed in on a rabbit and watched it blinking whilst it watched me. This game is brutal, funny and massively emotional, The best game ever, any new games I try now just don't cut it now. Will there ever be a game that makes me feel the way I feel playing this? Sadly I doubt it. Incredible.

Most devs don't want to spend years making a single title and very few game companies have the massive resources that R* possesses. But it also just comes down to profit - they can make more money by releasing sub-standard shite every 6 months because enough people will buy it.
For me true immersion isn't sound or graphics, but the ability to interact with every little thing in the game and manipulate them. Like the elder scrolls series. RDR 2 still failed at that.
I love how you can go into a saloon, order a drink, then walk over the road to the hotel while bladdered, pay for a warm bath and comfy room for the night, hit the sack then wake up in the morning, have a cup of coffee and back to the saloon for some breakfast before going out on a new adventure. For me, *that’s* immersion
This game really takes you back to a simpler time, where men were men and 30 fps was cool. In all seriousness, it's a great game, def WAB and such a beautiful immersive world....
I played this game like a project, only on weekend mornings for 6 months, total game time over 300 hours. Best gaming experiance there can be, you are living the life of Arthur Morgan, some days i just went on hunting and fishing and did nothing else. The immersion and level of detail is just ridiculously good. This game has set the gold standard that all other AAA games need or atleast try to reach.
Ran into someone in valentine, got chased as if I were a mass murderer. Horse was killed, and I died. Woke up with a bounty I could not afford. 10/10 would do again...
I LOVE this game... I love it so fucking much. i grew up on my granpa's ranch, used to spend most of the day down by the river or with the animals, surrounded by nature, real cowboys and living the country life. This takes me home so, so much and makes me feel warm and welcome. Love the story, love the gunfights, love the hunting, love the horse bonding etc.. I hate Micah tho. I thought this was one of the greatest control schemes ever done on a console. Every button was used and there were no conflicting options. The fact that they managed to cram this much control while skirting around the limitations of a controller is kinda amazing. Of course, it feels like clutter, but once you get used to it just sets in and stays in your mind. One of the more brilliant things they've done, in my opinion is set the iron sight for FPS mode to down on the D-Pad. I've never thought of it that way but it's actually functional and it feels good in hands.
I'm glad I played Kingdom Come Deliverance before this as it wet my appetite for the total immersion experience. Both games made me feel like I was living the life of the character and the freedom to bugger off, hunt & have adventures is just so relaxing and enjoyable. Love it.
Red Dead 2 is hands down my favorite game of all time, or at least til theres something somehow better. I agree 100% about the controls. Thebweapon wheel is frustrating. Pretty much the same in most shooter games. A contoller with a row of buttons for weapon slots needs to be invented. Free Aim is kinda crap on a controller too. But like you said.... clicking a mouse is not close to as fun as having a trigger. Some of the prettiest sunrises I ever saw have been in RDR2.
5 years later and nothing got even close to the world of Red Dead 2... Games, instead of getting better, are getting worse. Absolute masterpiece of a game.
The flaws that a lot of critics have mentioned are actually pros for me, like the slow looting, the controls for me is perfect but I do understand how some may not enjoy it, the dumbest con that someone mentioned not sure where I heard it was “too much realism is immersion breaking” ?! What how does that make sense how lol?! Either way macs right, but this damn game even if you don’t like GTA or any other of rockstars games, the passion and love that went into this game should be a wake up call to all publishers who rush their devs.

Except in ubisoft games you can generally turn off unskippable looting animations when they inevitably become tedious. My only gripe about RDR2... Skinning and bathing are cool and 'immersive' at first, but when you have to watch them over and over it's just annoying.
Another thing I liked was that your Journal is unique to your experience, he writes stories in the order you encounter them, and he draws pictures of your discoveries, I randomly came upon guys looking at a rock walked up to it and saw it was called "Register Rock" and had a bunch of signatures on like John Marston and many other EEs and he opened his Journal and drew a pic of it right there and side quests and animal discoveries, plants, challenges etc random encounters will all be recorded in there so at the very end you have a literal story book to see your entire story beginning to end.
Just rewatched this because Rockstar announced RDR2 for PC on November 5th. I haven't had the money to buy a PS4 just for this game but damn I'm so hyped for this game coming to PC!
I found that disabling aim-assist in GTA IV and RDR 1 made gunfights way more interesting. You don't just automatically ventilate the torso and have a bigger chance of hitting them in their limbs. That isn't a bad thing since the hit will keep them staggering for a moment while you deal with worse threats. Auto-aim can really dampen some fights in Rockstar games.
This game is like a Pink Floyd album or a fine whisky, enjoy it patiently, let it sit in with time. Beautiful. So far from the adrenaline rush we are used to in so many games.
Absolutely my thoughts regarding the tripleA. We call so many things triple A these days, and this is what triple A really means. I watched the last review you made on that zombie game, and its just sad to see shit like that coming to life with a price tag like rdr2.
I played the whole first playthrough with no mini map, free aim and first person 90% of the time, it was the most immersive game ive played, screw the missions, i lived in chapter 3 for a couple hundred hours, there will be nothing like this for me ever again
I found the free aim to wholly unusable (on Xbox) while this wasn't a problem when i played RDR1. They changed something which made it very heavy and sluggish feeling to me
I came to the game with the intention of being the honourable crime fighting anti-hero. I ended up being the villain that ties people up, puts em on train tracks while playing with my curly moustache chuckling "nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh"
the last few hours of story.. oh my god. My blood was raging and i was so agitated seeing how wrong has been happening to poor Arthur. this is fucking amazing story
It's definately more enjoyable. There's lots of references or in-jokes and certain characters where you're like "Ah, I see why that's the way that person is." etc.
Something that really broke immersion for me was after being mauled by a bear, covered in deep cuts and bruises and only just surviving, the cuts just disappear after 5 minutes. Was hoping I would be able to walk into camp or a town and everyone would react to it, asking what had happened or recoiling in disgust. But no, no ripped clothes, no wounds, nothing. In terms of the game world it was like it didn’t happen. It’s strange how they’ve gone all out with realism on some things but break immersion with this.

Yeah im loving first person mode for gun fights and looking around indoors. Super immersive! I'm using free aim and i guess as I'm so used to a controller im not having problems hitting enemies. I do miss my shots but that adds to the immersion for me as I feel that aim assist takes away any challenge

@@Handonforehead All FP mode games are clunky on consoles. I played GTA V online exclusively on an FP mode and was having a blast on my pc. Cant beat the mouse when precision is needed. Point is, it is not the game's fault
I still remember playing Red Dead 1 on my PS3. If anyone hasn’t played it, it’s aged pretty well. I would definitely recommend getting an old console and playing through it.
Your enjoyment of this game will absolutely come down to how lost and immersed you can get in this world. I for one can't get immersed in this world mainly because I just don't care about any of the characters at all so to me this game often feels like it's obscenely wasting my time by having me run all over the place. Go here, Go there, Go back, Get that, Bring it here, and on and on. There's far too much running around in this game and I found myself very often enabling cinematic mode and mashing X with one hand while browsing the internet on my phone with the other.

Rock* always kicked some serious ass in the game scene. This is no exception. GTA5 is amazing. RDR was amazing. Midnight Club was amazing... Their mistakes are few and far between. Maybe LA Noir, but that also has its strong points
GTA 5 was just good tbh, not amazing. There was really nothing special about it. But the Red Dead series, Bully, and The Warriors are my favorite R* games.
Would you expect anything less after earning 6 billion $ from GTAV ? Most of the work was done when they developed the GTAV game engine which was used for this game. This really is the top shelve of the gaming industry.
urdoo lil Well I finished the game and i have to say even though the Shooting itself is really repetetive, i was never bored by it because I was so immeresed in the world, the story and the characters. The atmosphere is also very good and you always get to new Locations, but maybe it will be more of an issue for you so you have to decide yourself if it is a problem for you.
If Counter Strike had also a third person view would you use it and talk about it? Same goes for games like RDR: first person is just plain bullshit. A gimmick, use it if you think that' this game is also a great FPS, but don't expect others to consider it worth mentioning it.

Mack, I know it’s late, but I’ve recently just delved into this amazing game. If you want ease of play with the controls, for exploration and horse riding, go 3rd person perspective. When entering buildings, searching drawers/cabinets, and using your weapons, go first person perspective. It’s much better that way. First person helps in close spaces. Hope it helps!

I got this game on a sale and let me tell you, as a console gamer, you are so spot on with the controls. I’m early into the game, and randomly running into O’Driscols while riding my horse to a mission can be an absolute nightmare. I either wipe them all out, or they completely shit on me. And yes! Simple shit like just looting cabinets, an example the early mission when u gotta rob that dudes house and take his carriage, absolutely annoying. Especially since u kinda feel timed since after all they are being distracted. Makes u not even wanna loot, but u have to tho early game from what I read.

for me i found first person abit better for some shootouts. it is terrible with controller but would be some much better with mouse and keyboard.
I switch to first person when I'm looting interiors. Makes it so much easier.

I honestly dont find controllers that clunky but it must be due to the fact that im used to it and i can switch wepons and such really fast.

I thought this was one of the greatest control schemes ever done on a console. Every button was used and there were no conflicting options. The fact that they managed to cram this much control while skirting around the limitations of a controller is kinda amazing. Of course, it feels like clutter, but once you get used to it just sets in and stays in your mind.
One of the more brilliant things they've done, in my opinion is set the iron sight for FPS mode to down on the D-Pad. I've never thought of it that way but it's actually functional and it feels good in hands.
They didn't skirt around controller limitations, the game was designed for controller, it came out on consoles first.
I really appreciate the relaxing music you use. Makes feel chill during your reviews.
I'm glad I played Kingdom Come Deliverance before this as it wet my appetite for the total immersion experience. Both games made me feel like I was living the life of the character and the freedom to bugger off, hunt & have adventures is just so relaxing and enjoyable. Love it.
I finished the main story line today and boy oh boy I had a blast definitely worth a buy
Red Dead 2 is hands down my favorite game of all time, or at least til theres something somehow better. I agree 100% about the controls. Thebweapon wheel is frustrating. Pretty much the same in most shooter games. A contoller with a row of buttons for weapon slots needs to be invented. Free Aim is kinda crap on a controller too. But like you said.... clicking a mouse is not close to as fun as having a trigger.
Some of the prettiest sunrises I ever saw have been in RDR2.
5 years later and nothing got even close to the world of Red Dead 2... Games, instead of getting better, are getting worse. Absolute masterpiece of a game.

The flaws that a lot of critics have mentioned are actually pros for me, like the slow looting, the controls for me is perfect but I do understand how some may not enjoy it, the dumbest con that someone mentioned not sure where I heard it was “too much realism is immersion breaking” ?! What how does that make sense how lol?! Either way macs right, but this damn game even if you don’t like GTA or any other of rockstars games, the passion and love that went into this game should be a wake up call to all publishers who rush their devs.

Except in ubisoft games you can generally turn off unskippable looting animations when they inevitably become tedious. My only gripe about RDR2... Skinning and bathing are cool and 'immersive' at first, but when you have to watch them over and over it's just annoying.

Another thing I liked was that your Journal is unique to your experience, he writes stories in the order you encounter them, and he draws pictures of your discoveries, I randomly came upon guys looking at a rock walked up to it and saw it was called "Register Rock" and had a bunch of signatures on like John Marston and many other EEs and he opened his Journal and drew a pic of it right there and side quests and animal discoveries, plants, challenges etc random encounters will all be recorded in there so at the very end you have a literal story book to see your entire story beginning to end.
Just rewatched this because Rockstar announced RDR2 for PC on November 5th. I haven't had the money to buy a PS4 just for this game but damn I'm so hyped for this game coming to PC!

I found that disabling aim-assist in GTA IV and RDR 1 made gunfights way more interesting. You don't just automatically ventilate the torso and have a bigger chance of hitting them in their limbs. That isn't a bad thing since the hit will keep them staggering for a moment while you deal with worse threats. Auto-aim can really dampen some fights in Rockstar games.

This game is like a Pink Floyd album or a fine whisky, enjoy it patiently, let it sit in with time. Beautiful. So far from the adrenaline rush we are used to in so many games.

I played the whole first playthrough with no mini map, free aim and first person 90% of the time, it was the most immersive game ive played, screw the missions, i lived in chapter 3 for a couple hundred hours, there will be nothing like this for me ever again
I found the free aim to wholly unusable (on Xbox) while this wasn't a problem when i played RDR1. They changed something which made it very heavy and sluggish feeling to me

Ryan Theres plenty in this game that relies on you having played the first. But it’s like Star Wars as in this is a prequel.
If you play the first one play it before this because its hard to go back to because of how much this game improves upon it.
It's definately more enjoyable. There's lots of references or in-jokes and certain characters where you're like "Ah, I see why that's the way that person is." etc.
You really don't if ya ask me, watch a video that just summarizes the RDR1 story and you're good to go.

Something that really broke immersion for me was after being mauled by a bear, covered in deep cuts and bruises and only just surviving, the cuts just disappear after 5 minutes. Was hoping I would be able to walk into camp or a town and everyone would react to it, asking what had happened or recoiling in disgust. But no, no ripped clothes, no wounds, nothing. In terms of the game world it was like it didn’t happen. It’s strange how they’ve gone all out with realism on some things but break immersion with this.

Yeah im loving first person mode for gun fights and looking around indoors. Super immersive! I'm using free aim and i guess as I'm so used to a controller im not having problems hitting enemies. I do miss my shots but that adds to the immersion for me as I feel that aim assist takes away any challenge

@@Handonforehead All FP mode games are clunky on consoles. I played GTA V online exclusively on an FP mode and was having a blast on my pc. Cant beat the mouse when precision is needed. Point is, it is not the game's fault

If anyone hasn’t played it, it’s aged pretty well. I would definitely recommend getting an old console and playing through it.
Your enjoyment of this game will absolutely come down to how lost and immersed you can get in this world.
I for one can't get immersed in this world mainly because I just don't care about any of the characters at all so to me this game often feels like it's obscenely wasting my time by having me run all over the place.
Go here, Go there, Go back, Get that, Bring it here, and on and on.
There's far too much running around in this game and I found myself very often enabling cinematic mode and mashing X with one hand while browsing the internet on my phone with the other.
I kinda wish I didn't have to tap x to make my horse move but at the same time I love the realism in having to keep your horse moving quickly

Rock* always kicked some serious ass in the game scene. This is no exception. GTA5 is amazing. RDR was amazing. Midnight Club was amazing... Their mistakes are few and far between. Maybe LA Noir, but that also has its strong points

Would you expect anything less after earning 6 billion $ from GTAV ? Most of the work was done when they developed the GTAV game engine which was used for this game. This really is the top shelve of the gaming industry.

Well I finished the game and i have to say even though the Shooting itself is really repetetive, i was never bored by it because I was so immeresed in the world, the story and the characters. The atmosphere is also very good and you always get to new Locations, but maybe it will be more of an issue for you so you have to decide yourself if it is a problem for you.
The controls are the same as rdr1 and gta v I see no complaints.

If Counter Strike had also a third person view would you use it and talk about it? Same goes for games like RDR: first person is just plain bullshit. A gimmick, use it if you think that' this game is also a great FPS, but don't expect others to consider it worth mentioning it.

Mack, I know it’s late, but I’ve recently just delved into this amazing game. If you want ease of play with the controls, for exploration and horse riding, go 3rd person perspective.
When entering buildings, searching drawers/cabinets, and using your weapons, go first person perspective. It’s much better that way. First person helps in close spaces. Hope it helps!
I truly love the game, probably the best one i've ever played. I just feel so limited by the controller tho.

Either you have robot like aim, or more likely the game clearly seems to be aiming for you.
Aim assist is set to normal, it's great for people like me that can't aim with a controller.

I got this game on a sale and let me tell you, as a console gamer, you are so spot on with the controls. I’m early into the game, and randomly running into O’Driscols while riding my horse to a mission can be an absolute nightmare. I either wipe them all out, or they completely shit on me. And yes! Simple shit like just looting cabinets, an example the early mission when u gotta rob that dudes house and take his carriage, absolutely annoying. Especially since u kinda feel timed since after all they are being distracted. Makes u not even wanna loot, but u have to tho early game from what I read.
