  • Jim and Brenda work together on the farm to get the garden and field harrowed before going on a horseback ride!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Agree 100% with what you said about small and old grass. The small grass has lots of sugar in it, which is not good for all horses too much, especially ponies. The sort of grass that you were asking for is probably 'meadow foxtail' (I had to look it up on as I only know the German word for it). It's quite common in pastures in my area and told to be a good sort of grass in hay for horses. Also love your community here, imo definitely one of the best I have seen on youtube!! Mistakes, well, I could tell a lot. That happens and it's a good lesson how to stay cool in such situations. The calmer you stay the easier you get it resolved. 😊 but I think, Bill only wanted to keep you in shape 😁Great, great video, put a smile on my face several times! -Chris

My stupid thing was having my 1800 lb Shire mare follow me out of the escape door of my trailer. I forgot to put up the chest bar (I had a walk through area in front of the horses with a chest bar) .. and she just followed me right out the person size door. She popped out of there like a cork. Not a scratch nor bend on the metal but boy it could have been bad if she got stuck. Needless to say I always put the chest bar up after that!

My parents had just bought a new horse and had me riding home instead of renting a trailer. It was only a 10 mile ride I'm about 3-4 hours. My mother followed me for a little while on the main road until we got to the rulral roads. He was no trouble at all and it was not afraid of any traffic. When we got home my sister helped me to unsatilim And then before we knew it he was headed down the road. I thought, "Oh no he's going back to his old home. But no instead he walked right through the old barnyard gate and headed for the water trough. I sure learned a lesson that day. My dad was quite annoyed but he went right out and cut down some trees and replaced all the gates.

Stupid things I’ve done: Loaded one horse in the trailer, left a new horse that was hard to catch in the pasture, trailered to the vet about 5 miles away. Almost two hours later, while I’m waiting at the vet to pay, husband called and said the new horse is out, running around and can’t be caught. I’d forgotten to close the gate going into the pasture after I’d loaded the horse in the trailer. The horse & I both lived through it.

When I was 12 my family rented a small horse farm. Let me tell you, this place was something else, the main house was a machine shop/ servers center that at some point had been converted into a two bedroom house, well thats fine and dandy for a family just starting out, the small bedroom was once a very small office and the big room was a small fabrication shop, the kitchen was probably customer service and family room was the service bay still had the sliding doors just nailed shut to make a wall. When the family got bigger they just got an old airstream and made a hallway to the main house, that's where my brother and I lived being older he was given the main room of the camper and I was given the torn out bathroom and the built-in dinette the place was awful but it had one redeeming quality it sat on 25 acres with several barns. So I worked my butt off to save enough money to buy my first horse, my parents were all about self-reliance and were willing to let me as long as I understood that they could pay for nothing we simply couldn't afford it. Having agreed to pay for everything myself we started looking and one Sunday after church my folks were having coffee with some people in the dining hall and they brought up I was looking for my first horse and one of the ladies said she would sell one of her younger ones that she was not planning on using in the show ring. So we followed her home and met all her horses and they were very nice, but this one was saying away from the crowd and kept coming from behind me grabbing my hand gently and trying to pull me away from everyone so I followed him up the hill to a nice flat spot and he got down on his front legs and I climb up on his back and we must have road around that field a dozen times before anyone noticed us. The lady said that horse don't like no one and dad said whelp I guess he likes my son and I ended up buying a horse that no one else could ride. I rode him home that day with nothing but a halter and a lead rope. Now the people who had been renting the place before us still had five of their horses on the property and one was of the nastiest little Shetland ponys you will ever find. When I got home with Omar and the family had a chance to meet him, I wanted to walk him around the fence line and introduce him to his new home, now the other horses were locked in the far back field but the little Shetland busted through the barbed wire ran straight at us and just started kicking for all his worth, I had a hold of Omar's lead rope and was trying to drag him away when they bought spun around and kicked at the same time and I was in the middle, both sets of hind hooves one set in the back one in the chest and I dropped like a rock, laid there unconscious. My dad jumped the fence and just as he landed Omar grabbed the pony by the neck and dragged him away from me and held him until I was carried out of the field by my dad. Ended up with 4 broken ribs and a lacerated liver. Omar hurt that little Shetland ponys so bad he was never the same he was nice to everyone never started any kind of trouble even after leaving the farm and going to a new place.

A person went to look at some land that was for sale and commented about how many rocks there were all over the field, the seller told the guy to pickup a rock and see all the moisture under it.
The buyer asked, How come your neighbor has all his rocks in piles?
If you go look his soil will be very dry and dusty.

When working with animals one just never really knows what is going to happen. Jim knows his animals and has worked with them that he knows unexpected things happen.

You can pick up stones, then harrow, then pick up more stones that come up. Repeat as many times as you want.

An adventurous day on the farm! So much variety and riding together on Ken, checking the fence was the added attraction.

I have been learning about sugar content of grass and I thought like you. However, not true. Many things factor in such as drought, unseasonably hot, and freezing temperatures. Sugar content goes up. Tall mature grass can have just as much sugar as short new growth. Depending on time of day and weather. Grass typically lowest in early morning and high in afternoon. Sugars feed grass into growth at night. I was certainly surprised. Love all your critters! Keep up the good work!

Just seeing this video now... lol I did such a similar thing one time Jim! I was in a routine turning horses out and all but one horse would go straight to the hay so you could just slip the halter off as they walked in without closing the gate. I wasn't thinking and pulled the halter off of the one horse you couldn't do that with, with an open gate. And in front of my boss. 🤦‍♀️Nothing bad happened, but man did I kick myself for the day. lol I never did stuff like that. But it happens to the best of us! :)

Awe this was a great one!!❤❤..Bill and his antics..I laughed so hard because when I had horses they loved to remind me no fence could hold them..they were just humoring me when they stayed in..the Arabs would raise their heads and go thru the wire like it wasn't even there..ponies just went under it because the fences were up so far for the tall horses😂..I love Ken..he's so mellow but underneath that cool exterior is a warrior..
I hope you 2 do more riding on future videos..this was so relaxing..I now know it's time for me to go on and get another horse..you 2 just showed me I can't mourn over a lost one forever..just remember - no hanky panky when the 2 of you are on one horse (even though that's fun too)..as always prayers and blessings

I think it's probably just an early variety of Timothy. Some early varieties were developed so they would persist in mixed alfalfa fields and pastures. Under agreesive modern harvest schedules the old Timothy varieties wouldn't survive. The older varieties were bred to head later so they would still be nice hay in late June. I have ruined the Timothy in mixed stands by cutting it before it headed.

urs, is that short for Ursula? my aunt's name..urs, I felt the same way today,,all our kids are grown and gone for the whole WK end doing their own vacation trips and we in our 80's felt a bit lonely,,so we got on a morning project outside and then settled in after a shower and lunch with our favorites " Brenda and Mr Jim,,working with horses,,it really blessed our hearts to see good Christian love, a great couple working and enjoying life together...🎶💐❤️

@@sueupham2519 No, here in Switzerland and Southern Germany Urs is a male name. Ursula for girls, Urs for boys. It is latin ans means BEAR.
Funny thing is, i live in the italian part of Switzerland, and down here, my name is not very common. Altough italian is more related to latin than german.

We use a cup of corn oil instead of oats etc added to plenty of alfalfa to put weight on a hard working horse . doesn't make them fizzy
