  • Today my daughters came to the farm to do chores while Brenda and I were away, and my daughter Trudy decided to take our Belgian Mare (Lady) for a ride! They talk about riding drafts and the difference between riding draft horses vs smaller horses.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    Love this channel.
I love the knowledge and respect you give/show your animals. Modern Humans do not understand or get the connection. I do not own a horse, but can truly appreciate our bonding with them. It is all about trust. You have my heart felt empathy's. As much as I enjoy our modern conveniences, I wish I was back in time. Real world knowledge and a skills.
Above all, absolute respect for all animals. We as modern Humans take too much for granted.

Have owned many horses in the past. One was a Percheron Stallion. He was a dream boy. He logged, plowed, pulled wagon. Others were saddle horses, sorrel TWH mare, black cutting mare, large pony, mules at various times. The last mare we owned was a black TWH mare that came with a surprise for us, a sorrel filly foal. She was trained to ride and pull carts. We're too old now to care for horses and miss the companionship they provided. Fond memories, those years with them.

I love all things horse and have since I was two. I now only have three horses...all seniors, but my main riding horse is turning 27 on May 20th who is the daughter of the best, most solid mare ever that I had for almost 40 years. I love your gentle giants and enjoy watching all of you work with them. Your dad did a fine job training them.

Yes! I am 74 and in Australia. All mine I bred in the 80's long gone. Always there were plenty of good horses, now I would still get on, but only good ones, lost all my muscle tone and not fit for the youngsters any more. Jim keeps us connected doesn't he?

I live in Massachusetts and I’ve had horses my whole life. Jumping on bareback with a halter and lead rope was always great fun! I watch your dads video’s all the time! He’s a really good horseman! Lots of respect for him! Most horses don’t tolerate two riders at a time because the one in back are sitting on their kidneys. Short backed horses especially are effected with riding double depending on weight, bouncing etc… some horses just tolerate it. You looked a little nervous out there and that’s ok but consider what that feels like to your horse. Ask your dad to watch this video. Especially your rein length, elbow position and your hands. Straight line from your shoulders to the bit doesn’t allow lady’s head to move without pulling her mouth as she needs her head to balance herself. Lengthen your reins a bit. Sit back a little, keep your elbows relaxed and bent, and your fingers closed to follow the movement with a nice even contact. All horses wether riding or driving move the same way. Some horses will trot or jig when there’s no give or a following the movement with your elbows at the walk or the canter. It’s just good horsemanship to do the best we can for our horses. These are just observations not criticisms! I love that you took her for a ride! Nothing better in life than jumping on my horse!

You girls are wonderful !!! I'm green with envy !!! Lady is beautiful & it was wonderful to see you bareback riding. You said you were curious about our "horse experience ". I grew up around horses, the neighbors had a few, but i didn't care to ride them. So I went to riding stables, which wasn't the best place, but I had many experiences, some hair raising. The best was to ride on a retired "police horse" a mare, she was a dream for a beginner. She responded to leg movements & even leaning in a saddle & turning you head. Nothing has ever compared to her. I always dreamed of owning one like her.
I live in South West Florida, work on an island in the Gulf of Mexico for the super rich. I'm not a sun worshiper, born in Michigan yearn to live north again someday but in northern middle Tennessee. Love your dad's channel & your whole family. I was a tomboy my whole life & drove a dump truck or tractor when necessary.
Actually prefer that over an office job, but I've been my own boss for over 30 years & that's the best job to have. You ladies are impressive in all your skills !!!
Hope your dad is mending well & your mom is awesome!!!

As a child, my granny and 2 of my aunts had horses. Neighbors had horses. When I was 16, I got my own horse. After having my daughters, we had more horses. Our family was very involved in the local saddle club. Multiple trail rides, local and out of state. Parade after parade, all around our area. We all were active in our local county saddle club. My oldest girl was princess one year and queen another year. Ribbons and trophies stacked up. Pretty much always had at least 1 horse but never more than 7 at any one time. Years have rolled by, horses are gone but memories are still bright. I enjoy your channel. 1 of the horses we have had was a good as gold old perch by the name of Big Dan. He was broke for wagons, logging and riding. Steady and gentle, grand old boy.

My mom's dad always had a horse or two, right up until his death at age 92. The only ones I knew were Blaze (a roan that he had throughout my childhood) and Nugget (light golden color, he had her for a good 30 years). I don't recall the name of the last one, but she was really just a "drop off" -- he was by then unable to walk, but some relative couldn't see Grandpa without a horse, so she dropped her off and came by every day to feed her and let her out where Grandpa could see her out the window. That poor horse was just finishing out her own days, and when Grandpa had a stroke and had to go to the nursing home, the horse wasn't long to follow.
Enjoyed the video as always 💕🐎

Southen Indiana,I recived my first horse for my 9th birthday, a guilting 17 hand cutting horse, that I named charley. I though it was my fathers love me, but later found out it was to work the cattle, also he farmed me out for three dollars a day plus feeding me and the horse. to the neibors for which I was unaware of the fee he was getting. It has been a good family.story. Your posting bring back my memories of my youth. I am a old man of 80 and my memories are a big part of my life, keep up the good work. My grandfather farmed a 160 acre farm in kansas all with horses, so I have a lot of memories.

So when I was 12 or so I went to camp Leo in New Hampshire. I was a “Horseman”. That meant I would get up everyday and feed my horse (the camps horse) and clean the stall. During the day campers got to ride. One of my memories is on Saturdays I would take my horse bareback into the lake. She would get in a few inches deep and start pawing the water. I just had a bathing suit on so the cold lake water would splash all over. Then we would swim the horses. It’s really neat to be on a horse while she swims. Back in Connecticut when I was about 16 we had a friend who had two horses. We all hung around the “barn”. That’s where I first met my wife. I used to go riding through the woods with the friend on weekends. There was this horse named Spinkey an old white stallion. I would ride him around the coral often. All of us were hanging at the barn on day. I figured I would impress all the girls so I decided to ride Spinkey bareback. He hadn’t been ridden in a while. He had this move where he would sidestep which I was used to. This day, in front of everyone I was riding around and Spinkey did his move and I corrected for it but then he threw in a new move where he immediately stepped back. So I took a dive right on my face in front of all! Had a messed up face for weeks. Over the years I got the opportunity to go on rides. Always loved horses. P.S. visiting my cousins in Ireland we got to tour a breeding farm. Got to see some amazing Thorobreds. We walked out in a pasture to see mom and baby up close. The baby was only a day old. Awesome.

    Well... from Australia...
Grew up in the outback on a 28,000 acre sheep station...
We did all our stock work on horseback, droving between properties for 2 days at a time...
Leaving the sheep in a holding yard overnight... whilst in transit!
3weeks of shearing and 3 weeks of lambmarking each year, and moving all the stock through the process!
    Best childhood ever!
But a very different environment than yours...
Seen sleet, but not experienced snow...
Yes, i have owned horses too...
And....The ups and downs of it!
Live at Lake Macquarie NSW now!

Yeah I once owned ex (quarter horse) barrel horse that I rescued from going for meat. His name was Billy and after I got him. I was told by my vet, that he would be lucky to live 6-9month because of bad heart. The Previous owners were a bit rough or harsh with him. But that was life of previous owner who was barrel racer. Leaving him standing tied up for hours for no reason. I was so happy to get him to our farm where he live out retirement and be well looked after and cared for.
I babied old Billy. We also think he might have some mustang blood lines in him. Thus even with bad heart. That was why he had lived for so long. When I got him. We took care him, also end up giving him some herbs that they give to old retired Grey hounds who also had rough life on dog track. I was told it works for horse too. So we spent extra on these herbs to give to Billy so it help with his heart. And it worked. As said, I was told maybe live for 6 + month, Cus he had heart murmur, Cus of his harsh life before as ex barrel horse.
Billy was over 35+ yrs before he finally passed away back 2014 (I think) at the time I too was in the hospital. I collapsed while Shovelling snow at my rented house in Calgary. Found out I had gall stones and they had to be removed ASAP. Billy also was not well and finally on same day I was in hospital. Was day he finally pass away.
I Had Billy for 6/7+ (I think) year and I baby him. Could jump on him with nothing but lead shank and haulier and ride around our 5 acres farm. Who ever trained him was very good trainer. After Billy died. A friend found out about and offer me her horse, a black Morgan named Legs, we changed to his name Legend. With papers. Still have his papers somewhere in picture frame. But he also has passed away. Parents couldn’t look after farm anymore and wanted move to the city Cus it was 45 min drive to closed town/city and snow storm were bad at times. Anyhow. My parents sold Legend without my consent, though I wasn’t living at farm anymore and moved to city. The person my mom sold legend too ended up getting legend killed, whiling rounding up cattle. He step in gopher hole and broke his leg. Unfortunately nothing could be done (or so new owner said) and what pissed me off is after legend died. He ask my mom for money, for some stupid reason when when already got legend free, without my consent.
I was never happy with how Legend died. The new owner somehow convinced my mom, he would take care of legend and he be good too him. But that didn’t happen. Don’t think legend was with new owner for more 6-9month before the accident happened.
Sure Legend didn’t have a lot of training or even been ridden much. Since I wasn’t living on farm. I Didn’t get chance to get known him like I did with Billy. Legend died because of new owner was rushing. He would never died if parents hadn’t not sold the farm or if I was still living there. I had legend for maybe 1+ yr but then I moved away. I Could not live with strick parents anymore. So I moved out and legend had to stay. We lived at farm for about 27+ yrs. moved to AB Canada in 1990 and we sold the farm around late 2016/early 2017. Don’t Remember exactly when.
Anywho. Yeah I’ve owned two horses. Almost saved a black draft horse back 2007 before I had found Billy. Also looked after neighbours horse after there had moved in Cus the farm house they bought down road from us didn’t have proper fencing.
Here is old picture of my old Billy. As said he lived to be about 35+ yrs old. We don’t know what his full age was. This picture was prob around 2007/09, I don’t remember.
    media.discordapp.net/attachments/139499886893727744/950646689457373254/image0.jpg
    (Billy and me)
Here picture (black horse Morgan) of Legend. Which I never really got to know. Cus I was living in the city. But got see him once in awhile on weekend at parents farm. Before they were getting old too look after him and the farm.
    media.discordapp.net/attachments/139499886893727744/950646477594710056/image0.jpg

To your question about the experience or experience with horses. I am from Friesland/Netherlands. I grew up with Frisian horses (8 pieces). We used the horses for all the farm work. We had a dairy farm with about 40 cows. I have worked a lot with horses. We had them for the farm wagon, carriage, and the like. I also rode it (without a saddle). I have ridden with 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 25 horses in carriage. I also trimmed many horses and beat irons under them. I myself am a man of almost 53 years.

I had draft crosses for 20 years in the 1980s/1990s. The fondest memories I had were in the cold Wisconsin winters when I'd saddle up my grey perch/cross mare. I'd loop a long rope to the saddle horn, attach a saucer to the other end and take my younger siblings for rides in the deep snow. If you'd trot fast enough in a circle the saucer would go airborne and the kids would be flung off the saucer and tumble into the soft, deep snow. They usually emerge laughing hysterically with a faces full of snow.

I've always been crazy about horses, rode with some friends as a kid but never owned one. It is Amazing to me to see what horses can do, how well they can be trained and I love watching videos of how to overcome difficult issues with horses. Your draft horses are stunning 😊! So well cared for. Thank you for taking me along with Lady today ❤️!

I’m sorry, I thought I commented on the other video that I’m from Hawaii. I rode a friend’s pony back in intermediate school. We rode bareback and only a handful of times. But I loved the horse stables! I even loved the smells. I’m disabled now and cannot hope to ride a horse but I love how beautiful your dads dad’s horses are. Take care and God bless!

We had both a Percheron and Belgian on our farm in Minnesota back in the fifties. I was eight years old and my legs stuck out straight to the sides; couldn't wrap them around their big bellies! They were the most gentle horses. I was only bitten by our pinto pony. He was a mean one.

I can't explain my love of horses, born and raised in Detroit, MI, except for the first time I ever road a horse on Bell Isle near the Detroit river, I fell in love. I have ridden some horses since, not a lot, but I'm hoping in a few year's to build a stable on my new property and to acquire a few Belgium's.
I have always loved Draft breeds for their size, strength and beauty and not being a small man ( 6'3, 250 ) I like to know that my mount can more than handle my weight.

Love this video - like the snow and Lady so well behaved, she probably does not like more than one person because after the 18th vertebra there is only soft tissue to take the rider's weight - and the weight would be on her kidneys - but she is very muscle covered and strong. fab video

We bred and raised Morgans here in Whitehall on the VT border for 14 years. Our horses weren't too big but they all drove single and double as well as for riding. You girls are terrific! I'm so impressed that you appreciate all that the horses can do.It's great to see brenda, Jim and the two of you working the horses but, its great to see you have fun wityh them too.

I know more about dairy cows than about horses. I tried homesteading for 5 years but didn't really succeed.. I worked a few times making boiler firewood with horses in a sugarbush but, I was the hand, the owner was driving the horses. Your channel feeds my reverie because, since I'm 71, I won't have horses. I like when you girls and your mother talk about and to the horses as friendly individuals. I like to hear about the wood species in the woodlot. Basicly, I'm a daydreamer ... I live in the heart of Quebec City

I found this video fascinating. I liked the contrast between this and how I've seen the dad working with the horses. I was attracted to watching it because of the bareback riding. It was interesting to me that Lady was wearing blinders for being ridden. I liked the way Lady came back into her stall when asked to after she wandered out.

I also liked to see the way Lady pranced.
Since you said you were interested in your viewers' experiences with horses, I'm 68 years old and fell in love with horses in my 50's when I met someone who was doing EGE, which is Equine Guided Education. I don't get to see those same horses much anymore, but I'm now taking riding lessons elsewhere, which I love. I do feel like it's hard for me to get enough horse time.

Rode a small broomtail mare in southwestern NM in the fifties herding cattle. Of course being 12 years old she wasn't small to me. Like all broomtails, she was smart and was tougher than nails to work in the foot hills of Black Range.

You two are sooooooooo cool ! You have made a most enjoyable video. Thank you. Oh, yes, I had owned a horse in my twenties. I had not clue what I was doing or how sensitive that horse was. I look back and don't think I was a good owner. My horse got good care at the stable where I boarded her. But, as for me.... I now see how I was with the dog and horse I owned at that time. I regret my indifference and self centeredness of my youth. I am learning a kind of gentle compassion from watching your family's relationship to your horses and other critters and also towards each other. Again, thank you

Good to see you girls helping your parents, thats how it should be. I really enjoy the videos I've never been around horses, a few cattle but no horses. My Grandfather and Papaw used horses and oxen to timber here in southern WV until the 1940's when they started working in the coal mines. I too work in the coal industry as did my Dad and Brother, but someday I hope to walk behind a horse in these hillsides.

I love your channel! I’ve never own a horse. My father promised me one but it never happened. But I used to walk down to a stable close to my house and volunteered. I would clean stalls and they let me ride once in a while! Maybe one day I’ll get my horse, but until then I can live vicariously through you all❤️🐴❤️
