Saved a fortune watching these videos to repair our washer (Whirlpool ultimate care 2 (11) ten years old). My husband who really has no hands on repair experience managed to follow them. We replaced the clutch kit search for (285753A) and the motor coupler, search for (275753) If you only need the clutch band off it search (3951993 band only) We also replaced the agitator dogs search for (80040) and looked at the door switch which we disconnected to see if that worked. Typically it was the last thing we tried which was the motor coupler! Persevere these are simple machines and not much can go wrong, mine has now had a full MOT and new replacement parts so should go for another ten years. Hope the product codes help, I spent hours Googling!! xx

    This guide was great!
I would note that when sliding the transmission back in, you may need to spin the clutch around until the transmission slides the rest of the way in. It took me several minutes to figure out how to get it to go all the way in. It was stuck a half inch out until I did that.

A few things not mentioned in the video:
    1) Expect about 1 qt of water to drain out of the machine. Have extra towels and a mop handy.
2)Installing the circular clip on the spacer holding the clutch down: A pair of channel-locks really help in doing this. Squeeze one end of the clip and the other end with the shaft.
    3) Installing the motor/clutch coupling (2 plastic pieces and rubber bushing): Seat the first piece on the shaft, and tap it into place. Then put on the rubber bushing. Then put the other plastic piece on the motor. Line up prongs, push entire motor onto bushing, and using a mallet, tap in until tightly together (easier to do when the machine is still on it's back.
    4) Motor clips may be difficult; have a crowbar or breaker bar for leverage. Top clip first, then lever motor downward until bottom clip can go on. Clip on pump, THEN tilt mackine forward.

This was a great video very detailed and easy to understand . The only issue I had was when I reinstalled the motor it was a bit difficult because it was very low to the floor and the motor a little heavy to hold and keep the spring clips from falling off. I put a six inch block under the frame and then was able to better see where the shaft attached and the spring clips stayed put without falling off. Piece of cake after that. I was wondering if it would be better to attach the motor while the machine was still on it's back.

Videos showing setting this type of washer on its back or side should caution that oil will slowly seep out of the gear case vent hole, so the machine should not be left in this posture for a long period of time - for example when a DIY job is interrupted by other matters. Perhaps the vent hole can be temporarily closed with tape if the worker understands where the vent hold is.

how do I know if my problem is the drive coupler, clutch, or transmission? All three, from what I read online, may be the problem. The top part of the agitator spins, but the bottom won't budge. Removed both and the spindle in the tub is locked up. Did this after I manually drained the entire tub of dirty water. It filled, but there was no spin, so it was stuck in there. And when it tried to spin, I heard a grinding noise.

Is it possible I’ve damaged/bent the transmission shaft? I’ve done this several times to fix/check several issues with no problems before but this time after putting back together, the basket shakes violently during spin cycle. I checked the tensioner springs and they seem ok. I’m afraid I left the weight of the transmission on the shaft while sideways and partially pulled out. Everything else went back together and worked fine, I only had trouble pulling the transmission out and had to give it hell before I got it.

I just changed mine and the coupler also and I just ran a load and it spun quickly and seemed to be working it smells strong like burning plastic or something so I don’t know what it could be. It didn’t smell like that before I did it, it was just spinning extremely slow and now it’s spinning fast and seems to be working again but the smell is horrible and it did squeal for a moment before it went to the spin cycle. Any suggestions?

Put you washer on the spin cycle and close the lid. Let it run for a few seconds the open the lid really quick If the tub is not spinning or look like it was spinning then it is the clutch Save your self a headache and replace the motor coupler too. Hope that helps
