      @@PierreThompson-p4x Yeah well, it turns out, what they have really done is government tightly fixing its currency's exchange rate.
      These IMF data was published in April. A time when Ethiopia's exchange rate was still fixed by the government to less than 60birr to the dollar.
      That is what IMF used.
      But Ethiopia was forced by huge debt, inflation, and dwindling FDI to float its currency in July. Now, the market has taken it to 121birr to the dollar.
      That means it has lost more than half its value. Translate that to the $200B GDP and the actual GDP is half of that.
      That is what happened to Nigeria. For the longest time Nigeria has always artificially fixed the value of its currency. So its GDP figures were >$400B. Last year they ended that and they floated it.
      The market forces devalued it, and now its GDP figures is down to $250B.
      Next year April IMF will have the updated data, and you won't see Ethiopia's GDP anywhere close to $200B that data has now.

    • @Franklyn-j8l

      @@patriot_2022 market forces did not devalue nigeria currency. Nigeria devaluation was done twice by the government, last year and the start of this year, don't know if they did it because they want to trade oil in thier local currency with new refinery.
      but nigeria gdp will probably be a lot bigger by next year because dollar demand will be down as they just started trading oil in thier local currency.

    • @patriot_2022
      @patriot_2022 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Franklyn-j8l According to the information I'm finding on economic publishers, Nigeria did not just devalue the Naira. When you say that it implies the government decided on an exchange rate it wants and then imposed it. And that is not what happened.
      What Bola Tinubu did is he removed a fixed currency peg and scrapped a system of multiple exchange rates, instead allowing the naira’s value to be market determined.
      That is called *floating a currency*. He simply let the market forces of demand and supply decide the Naira's value.
      That is why there was an immediate fall in value sparking a cost of living crisis and protests.
      But it did intervene around April by directly selling more dollars and the Naira regained a little bit.
      But now Nigeria's government no longer fixes the Naira's value like it did in the years prior.
      It is now doing like Kenya. And it's always a bit risky because imports can become expensive quickly. It's only helpful if the government is serious about local production, and that is a longer term thing whose impact won't be seen as quickly.
      Egypt also did the same recently.

    Ethiopia is building a diversified economy driven by human capital, with a government committed to the rapid development of infrastructure and technology in the country. Reforms are opening the Ethiopian market to private initiative, positioning the country for significant economic growth. It is a matter of less than a decade before Ethiopia becomes the largest economy in Africa. Unlike many other countries on the continent that rely heavily on natural resources to drive their economies, Ethiopia is building a much more stable and intelligent economic foundation. This strategic focus is set to ensure long-term resilience and sustainable growth, making Ethiopia a promising economic leader in the region.🇪🇹

      @@Shadowyartsdirty3 no, that's not correct. China has overcapacity in manufacturing and construction, among other things. That overcapacity becomes an externality (i.e., spills over) to less developed countries, especially if the projects are done by China and funded by the loans borrowed from China. Find out which company is doing the construction and where the money came from to fund the project. If you don't read history you are bound to repeat the same mistake. IMF did the same in DRC in the 1960-70s. They loaned DRC money, then the money was used to fund numerous projects, spearheaded by IMF. That means IMF got the money back via those projects but the country remained indebted because it didn't payback the debt. In which case, IMF takes ownership of the infrastructure it constructed, further generating revenue for themselves. Same thing with those roads you think it's development. It's time people start playing chess, not checkers.

    • @patriot_2022
      @patriot_2022 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeap. GDP is value of goods and services produced, and the figures are provided a country's central bank in the local currency. From there IMF posts it in dollars based on the exchange rate.
      Ethiopia's economy was just a little over $95B beginning of 2024.
      The figures given can be deceiving. Kenya's economy is far more diverse and developed overall in comparison. Its value is bigger.
      But what all this has completely right, is that Ethiopia has very good momentum and Kenya's economy isn't growing right now.
      Might even slow further in the next 5-7years.

      @patriot_2022 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Franklyn-j8l But in truth these figures can be quite misleading. Ethiopia's economy hasn't shrunk.
      It is still what it was, albeit growing steadily.
      An economy can't just shrink unless there are some serious problems within or it is affected by adverse external pressures. None of which exist at the moment.
      It is the dollar figures that will keep fluctuating based on the prevailing exchange rate, but the Ethiopians still have what they had.
      It is always better for countries to maintain a floating exchange rate. Like Kenya. You will never lie to yourself about the value of what you have in your country.
      It has its risks, but it will also show the most accurate reflection of how the economy is doing, when exchange rate is determined by the market.
      If Ethiopia were to float its currency, they will likely find out that their economy is only a little over $98B.

      Kenya maintains a floating exchange rate. I'm not sure you understand that. It means that the value of the currency is determined by market forces of demand and supply, and not fixed by the government.
      Ethiopia did in fact just float its currency recently, and that is why its value has gone down so rapidly.
