About the Blonde reaction, it's completely understandable and I'm actually surprised Mike can appreciate as much of this completely new music on first listen anyway. It's amazing how subjective an experience music can be, most non hip hop fans are hearing something almost completely different than long time fans of the genre. I know from looking back to before I loved the genre and songs I heard back then hit completely differently now.
I totally understand Mike's initial reaction to Blonde. I was a huge Frank fan and when Blonde dropped I instantly gave it a full listen and I was... underwhelmed? It didn't grab me. There were elements I liked but I ultimately shelved it for a couple weeks because I couldn't really get into it. When I decided to return to it, my opinion completely changed. All of the songs I wasn't fond of were suddenly making sense. I was able to appreciate every little quality of each song and pick up on subtle harmonies and really appreciate how experimental and different it was from his previous work. I had thought I wanted another Channel Orange, but when I gave it a chance I discovered how much better Blonde was than anything he had done previously. It immediately became my favorite album of all time and I was so thankful to have it exist in this universe at the same time as me. It's interesting how those repeated listens to albums can completely change your opinion of them or give you new appreciation for things you previously weren't fond of. And that's why AMHAC is so special. I didn't have any of those reservations, there wasn't any part of the album I didn't like, everything just felt perfect. To me, that says a lot as AMHAC is so much more experimental, so much all over the place (while somehow also being incredibly concise), something that should be a rougher first listen. But it wasn't. It was perfect. It completely changed how I looked and listened to music, how I viewed musical creativity, and opened up my perspective so much on just a single playthrough. AMHAC has probably surpassed Blonde for me as my favorite album of all time. Peggy is my favorite artist of all time. I can see and hear his legacy being formed in real time and I know he'll be talked about with high praise for a long time. He has pushed boundaries that I didn't even know existed.
Amhac and Peggy as a artist as a whole makes some life changing works of art he really pushes the limits and as you said limits and boundaries you didn’t even know could be pushed it makes me feel like a giddy kid sometimes listening to how individualistic and free his production is he has no artistic chains and isn’t a slave to conformity he says fuck it and does his thing
Just wanna say the genuine reactions are what bring me back to this channel!! So many other channels that curate their reactions to please a certain audience or fanbase and it is such an instant turn off.
Jpeg has easily one of my fav discogs in hip hop history, and one of the few artist I’d give a 5/5 for 3 of their albums(black Ben Carson, LP, AMHACB) Dope to see you guys get into him
Jpeg has alot of popculture references in either his beats(in the form of sample selection) and his lyrics/bars. I started listening to him and find myself lost in the innuendos he implements. The textures in his production is also hypnotic and disorienting at times but always intentional. He is a gem. 👌🏾💯 Great reaction guys.
Happy new years! So cool watching your dads journey through this incredible album. I love this album so much so it was cool to see you guys react to it!
Please tell me you’re gonna show him Frank’s Endless. I think he’s on the verge of turning and Endless has some beautiful sonics and equally great lyrics. Bless!
BLKSWN and NOIR would be interesting also to see from them. hes definitely created his own lane within r&b/chillhop/rap and I think he creates a super cool atmosphere they would like
I think Grimy Waifu is more about how people he knows are getting shot, with "these bullets coming at you" he means his grimy waifu since she is gonna protect him. at least i interpretate it this way.
Never mind ive got to correct myself, i did a little Research and the grimy waifu is actually a Metaphor for his gun. Since peggy is a veteran he was taught the phrase: "This is your gun. This is your Girl...."
this still remains jpegs best album, i know that his fanbase disagrees and pick some albums that he made under devon hendryx like gpt just to feel different, but cornballs still his greatest project
Jpegmafia and I technically kissed when he grabbed the blunt out of my hand and hit it at one of his concerts
This is true I was there
as a straight white male jealous
Will be impatiently waiting for LP now 😢
