    “Between them, Vergil, Dante and love interest girl look like a fucking treehouse club plotting to get their ball back from mean old Mr. Henderson.”
    I laughed so hard when he brought that up. I knew there was something funny about the plot of this game, but I just never figured out how to explain it, let alone with the kind of sarcastic wit that Yahtzee does it with.

    My thoughts on this game is that it's one of this games that suffers because of the name attached to it, in a similar fashion to the first lords of shadow, this is an strong Action game that just can't live up to the name it decided to go with, if lords of shadow remained just lords of shadow without the castlevania part and this game had another title, I'm sure people would have liked them, recommended them, some probably even loved them

      Well that's the Problem with Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Final Fantasy XIII, DmC Devil May Cry, Castlevania Lord of the Shadows etc.
      If you continue on a franchise, you are bound to be compared with the previous games. Now if you suck ass compared to them and your only plus site is graphics, you lose a lot of ratings and stuff. None of the names I mentioned are bad as games, but just not good in their respective franchises. If DmC were f.e. Demon Hunter Noxys(made up name here), a game about a black haired half angel half demon kid, that tries to save humanity and free them out of their slavery, everyone would be like: Hey that's a nice game, good to see other franchises in the Hack n Slay genre, that are trying to compete with God of War and Devil May Cry. But NO, they f*cked up a lot of potential, made stupid jokes about their way superior predecessors and overall the game was hated for being a bad reboot and being a mediocre game

    • @benedictrogers1478
      @benedictrogers1478 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I'm agreeing that DmC failed because it was a bad Devil May Cry game, and that was pretty much it's only major mistake (it has minor ones, like bad weapon balancing). Now I haven't played Darksiders yet (it's next on my list), have never been interested in God of War, and have only just played Metal Gear Rising, but I always found that hack and slash games really seem to need more great series.
      If the game had been called something else, Demon Hunter Noxys actually being a decent example, I would have applauded it for being a good introductory game in the genre. Less deep than many, but it still has some core elements. But they didn't, and they called the main characters Dante and Vergil, and so now I have to find an introductory game that wasn't a massive disappointment.

      @@ShamblesTCG MGR wasn't a continuation though.
      It was made by a seperate developer *and* was advertised as kind of a offshoot of the franchise set in the same universe.
      Most of MGS takes place in the cold war era, MGR takes place years later with a character that never really had much input after MGS II
      Was more of a "fuck it, nobody liked Raiden so heres a story where hes all grown up with some fun gameplay"

    • @b3rz3rk3r9
      @b3rz3rk3r9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True, it has its problems. Even then, I prefer it to the original in only the Gameplay dept. And not much else. Story's enticing, in how it seems like a demonic version of "They Live," but the depricating humor against its predecessors is a turn off since it does so without much taste.

    It was a fun little hack and slash : nothing more and nothing else. When it comes to Dante you eigher hate him or are mildly amused. It's worth playing if you just wanna have some mindless fun. The weapons are interesting and the mechanics make you feel awesome when you manage to somehow accomplish them as well as they let you develop your own style . Its a strangely patience needed hack and slash since you got to wait to complete moves. Its not complete hell but it isnt a heavenly gift either: ironicly it is somewhat in between. The design is fun and the graphics are satisfiable . The game is strangely engaging and worth playing through if your bored.
    Well at least that was what I thought

      Why would he not like it? The gameplay is fluid and fun, especially once you get all your weapons and start the next difficulty. The only legitimate complaint I have heard against this game is that its not the original DMC continuity and that is more of a preference than a complaint, some people might like being half angel half demon better than being half demon. The Bob fight was rather cool as long as you don't have seizures from it and the levels were pretty good looking.

Perhaps he does nitpick a little, but I'd like to believe most people would agree or at least understand his opinions as reasonable, if a bit extreme. It's not that he "doesn't want to be one of those reviewers who praises games", he only praises games that he feels genuinely deserve to be praised, and in this generation, very few genuinely good games come out anymore, which is why Yahtzee rarely ever praises games.

    Just played a copy I got for free from a friend from the humble bundle, shit as a dmc game, has good parts when considered it's own game, but has a lot of weird flaws that get dismissed too easily by people. Shit story is not something that should just be ignored, unlikable characters is not un-important, platforming in a stylish- action hacknslash is generally ass and should not take up more of the game than the fighting. When the fights get properly challenging the game does
    Mostly i don't get why so few call the game out having so many quicktime events. They are disguised to be colour coded jumps, interactions and enemies, but if there is no option but to act on triggers it gives you in a straight line, and they must be done exactly according to flashing prompts or you don't progress/get hurt, that is a quicktime event. Too much colour coding and QTE's give the player too little freedom.

    I loved the game. I liked it so much I went over it twice. Quick combat, at times unforgiving but nothing extremely challenging and makes you feel badass when you get the hang of - perfect for a casual gamer with a small case of nostalgia. I think it did what it had to do, no more, no less.

    I really don't see what is it that people find great about this game.I always had that theory at the back of my mind that the reason this game gets love is that it got hated the second it was announced.DmC literally had the god tier combat of DMC4 to work on, yet it decided to be another God of War clone for some reason.The main character is supposed to be Dante yet they removed all his key abilities such as the styles and completely ruined the Devil Trigger.What's Dante in a modern hack 'n slash game without his unique styles, his unique combat gameplay, his goofy altitude and cheesy dialogue and a god awful devil trigger?Basically he is a Donte.The game is simple as fuck and has not much of redeeming qualities other than it is fun.But since when "fun" is enough to consider a game very good?Any game can be fun, even Ride to Hell Retribution LOL if you want a terrible game to laugh uncontrollably at.That does not make it very good.DmC is nowhere near as terrible as many say but reviews are like the most dishonest thing ever.Game is barely 5-6/10 and nowhere near 8 or 9.There is nothing deep about the game and even as a reboot it fails.A reboot supposedly happens when a game is a mess in terms of storyline and can't be put together so the devs start all over to fix that.Well DmC is just as a mess in terms of story.Awful characters, generic and unmemorable bosses which is terrible for a hack 'n slash game and enemies are total pushovers.A hack 'n slash game is supposed to be difficult and have awesome boss fights.DmC has none of these two.Even the final boss is a ripoff of DMC3(so much for "completely different glimpse of the DMC world").Mundus is extremely dissapointing.Any game out there with a story as mediocre as DmC, toned down and simple as hell combat, unmemorable bosses, dissapointing as hell "big bad boss"(Mundus) and awful character designs literally gets burnt to the ground yet DmC Devil May Cry gets away with it

    Maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't hear anything about the recommendation being taken back. The joke he made at the end ("I thought my boat was going to be made seaworthy") was a tongue-in-cheek reference to him thinking the fight was going to be harder. That's the only other reference to the boat after the recommendation.

      300-I.Q. Prower I always saw it a bit more symbolically. Dante rejects the white hairdo because at that point, he's not the true Dante. It's not until the end of the game where he fights Vergil and declares himself humanity's protector that his hair turns white. At that point, he has earned the white hair. He's the true Dante in the end.

    i just played this game. and my initial opinion of it was comletely turned around. i love it. i love it more then 1 and 3( the only ones i played). its absolutely fun as hell, and if you want you can just consider this game apart of the canon as being the 1st game in the series, for the reasons that it is easier then the older games, still really hard, but easier compared to the old ones. thankfully. the old ones were way to hard. and for the other reason that yes, spoiler alert, the white hair comes back. i consider this game the 1st in the series not a reboot. i love the hell out of it. and i just dont understand all the hatred for it.

      The Rogue Empire Taneem confirmed on twitter that Dante is supposed to be 27 in DmC: DMC. I don't remember where I read that Dante is supposed to be 19 in DMC3 and I can't really be arsed to find a source for that.
      As for why many old school fans like me dislike the game it's got more to do with the gameplay then the story. The combat in DMC4 was ridiciously deep yet rewarding and DmC: DMC feels like a massive step down in that regard. On top of that the boss fights feel like a massive step down. On top of that the boss fights where really bad.
      That said Capcom seem to have been listening to the criticism and have fixed a lot of what the fans complained about for the definitive edition.

    • @Koranthus
      @Koranthus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am pretty sure the regular 3 modes are introductory difficulties for newer players to the franchise. Also, i am pretty sure the color coded enemies are to assist new players in building up their weapon switching combo skills. I mean there are only 4 enemies in the game that are color coded so i don't see how that's such a big deal its just the Frost Knight, Death Knight, Ghost Rage and Hell Rage and they usually fight simultaneously to force you to pay attention and swap weapons correctly. I thought they worked pretty well while i was getting used to the combat this go around and then became better fights on higher levels when you mix them with those dream walkers or other tough enemies. Overall i really liked this combat system better than the style system because honestly I've never liked the gun play in DMC except E&I juggling so having 5 different melee weapons to bounce between constantly with unique combos was pretty fun and as i scaled up difficulty modes it was much more fun and satisfying to build combos on tougher enemies. I went back to DMC4 recently and it felt way more clunky and less fluid than this one honestly. If you felt it was too easy then why not push up the difficulty? This is one of those games with like 8 difficulties so its weird that people complain about Human and Demon Hunter mode being easy when they are designed like that for new players or returning players needing to learn the new systems.

      Well, I loved the gameplay, the combat is endlessly satisfying. The environment was beautiful, in a sort of grungy way, that you would expect from this kind of game. The music was incredible, I even bought a few tracks off the soundtrack. And I'm alone in this, but, I played the first 3 devil may cry games endlessly in high school, and the 4th after I graduated, and really, they weren't THAT good. Dante was just a rapid fire of cringe worthy one-liners in 3 and 4, he barely spoke in 2, had about as much character as a dry sock in 1, and don't ever forget "Fill your dark soul with LIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!" That. was. awful. And none of the story was even remotely coherent. I mean, aside from having a guy in a red coat named Dante, what was even happening in DMC2? It's easy to get mad cause this guy has black hair, but look back at the previous games realistically. We've come a long way.

    While I am always supportive of greater challenges (difficulty in games) I can see how that can block quite a large group of gamers. Previous installments seemed "too anime" or "too hard" for some people. Ninja Theory wanted to make the game accessible to newcomers, while keeping the combat fluid and stylish as in previous installments. I personally believed they found a decent middle ground between the two points. It isn't as hard as classic games, but the combos I love are still there.
