  • Pirates Lair at Tom Sawyer Island is a fun attraction at Disneyland Park in Anaheim. The island sits in the middle of the park and you have to take a raft over to it. Once you are on the island, you can explore to your hearts content, walking through caves, over bridges and up on top of shipwrecks. I explored the whole island with my family and here is all the information.

I’m old enough to remember the playing in the fort. To me it was the best part, aside from the caves. The island is so much fun. Great memories

Wow, thanks for the memories. I always loved Tom Sawyers Island and the riverboat. I went there when I was 8 years old when it first opened. So much fun to explore.

Several years ago, my husband and I were invited by the captain of the Mark Twain to ride in the Wheel House. I thought it was a once in a lifetime adventure, but it turns out that they invite one family up on every trip. My husband is a Disney fanatic, so he really loved it. Also, I've been on the canoes, and I think it's way too much work for a ride :-)

I've never explored the island, I thought it was off limits with how empty it was 20 years ago. Will have to remember to take the raft next time I go there again to finally explore the island!

As an avid Disneyland fan, Tom Sawyer’s island is truly a treat. I don’t go often but I absolutely love anytime I have a chance to explore.

Fond memories. My history at Disneyland goes back to when they sold tickets for the rides in addition to admission - hence the term “an A ticket”. 59 years ago my girlfriend and I did Graduation Night at Disneyland. Everything was open, without tickets, from normal closing to dawn. Everything that is except Tom Sawyer’s Island for rather obvious reasons given the crowd of randy 18 year-olds!

I loved the island on my first visit, 1959. I was 10. I explored and forgot reality the whole time. Fought Indians, played with huck fin, got lost in caves. It was GREAT.

I remember the island from my first visit in 1965. I would ride the steam boat around the island but could never figure out how to walk to the encampment where the smoke was. Great fun.

I love Tom Sawyer's Island! Haven't been there since they put "Pirate's Lair" in. We used to be able to play in the fort, so much fun! When we ate at Hungry Bear one time years ago, my son (he was about 5) really wanted to ride the canoes! Neither my husband or I had ever been on them! It was lots of fun, but my husband ended up doing most of the paddling with the guide at the end of the ride HA! All the little kids (and moms) tired out! Thanks for the fun video 😀

I have never done the raft or mark Twain boat but I’ve done the canoes several times. It’s really fun but wait til the kids are old enough to row themselves. They have budding comedians directing the boat. It’s pretty fun. I’d totally recommend it. But the canoes don’t land on the island. Thanks for sharing this part of Disneyland that I’ve never been to

Excellent video! Thank you for the mini vacation. My kids caught the tail end of the Fort Wilderness experience. The island became more “safe” during their childhoods, but there’s still plenty of fun things to do. And- your kids are adorable!!

Of all the times I've been to Disneyland (many times), I've never been on the Tom Sawyer Island. I wouldn't mind missing the last boat to the mainland and spend then night on the Island. Now, I have something to look forward to if I ever go back. Thanks for the video.

I fondly remember climbing and crawling all over the island decades ago. I was about 7 or 8 (rough guess), and my brother was supposed to be watching me. He would have been about 12 or 13, so he didn't. My parents knew I couldn't get off the island, and unbeknown to me was keeping an eye out on where I was. I thought the place was *huge*, and enjoyed playing there for what seemed to me to be hours. It was great fun, and I highly recommend it for anyone with kids.

My best friend and I would run to Tom Sawyers Island first thing. We'd go to Fort Wilderness, get a pickle or potato chips and a coke then climb up to a spot in the fort and watch people go by. We'd try and run over the pontoon bridge. We'd go through the caverns. There's a lot more to explore then when we were kids (around 50 years ago)! I haven't been to Disneyland in years, but I still love it.

I remember being a young kid around 7 years old (45 years ago!) and running around Tom Sawyer's Island. I was enjoying the caves, until some big kids jumped out from around a corner and screamed "Boo!" in my face and made me cry. The end.

The canoe ride is a lot of fun if you get a dedicated group. It's a good work out and it's fun when everyone works as a team. I'm putting my kids on it next month to help them learn team building skills with each other. Also it's a different way to see the river too.

I've done the canoes with my wife and 2 kids , it's interesting but I don't recommend for kids under about 6 , my daughter was 6 when we went and she lost her paddle about the halfway point . The Jungle cruise is probably the most fun ride where water is concerned .

My friends and I (four of us) rowed our hearts out on the canoe. We were the only guests onboard rowing at all and catching up with the Mark Twain riverboat was easy. But we were doing too well and our guide shut us down so we couldn't pass it.

My sister and I would go to the island, and head to the cave. You showed the cave, and the part that had a section of a wall which separated the cave so you could go go on either side. We used to hide on one side and wait for people to go past then we would jump out and scare them. I know it wasn't nice but it was sort of funny. You showed the cave in the opening scene of the video, but I didn't see it in the rest of the video. I would of gone in the 50's and very early 60's.

I haven't been there in over 20 years but I remember there was a cave of some sort where you would be walking at a slant and I don't remember if there was a mirror in there I'm pretty sure there was a railing because you felt like you were walking crooked no matter how straight or crooked you walked. Is that not there anymore?

Disneyland should retheme Tom Sawyer Island to Treasure Planet, or Aladdin Cave of Wonders or Muppet Treasure Island or Moana.
To the Disneyland fans out there, with the ride Splash Mountain getting rethemed to the Princess and the Frog, I was wondering if Disneyland plans on retheming Tom Sawyer Island. Because the problem is most people today hardly remember the story of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and isn't popular anymore. While I like some of pirate scenes. Most of the parts on the island isn't as exciting.
If I were in charge of the rides, I would retheme Tom Sawyer Island and retheme it to either The Emperors New Groove, or Treasure Planet, or Aladdin Cave of Wonders or Even Muppet Treasure Island. I can't wait for Disneyland to retheme Tom Sawyer Island. Also I'd probably retire the steamboat and replace it with a faster speedy mini cruise ship.
Also I want to see Frontier Land renamed to Country Land.
Let me know what you think should replace Tom Sawyer Island. Would you like it changed to Muppet Treasure Island, Treasure Planet, Aladdin Cave of Wonders, or The Emperors New Groove or Moana. The likely candidate for a retheming would be Moana Island since it's the most popular movie with the coconut creatures.

Canoes are 100% worth it but it’s NOT a ride 😂 it does require manpower, and it’s annoying when guests just sit there and let their oars drag into the water LOL. Go on a day that’s not too hot & you have energy. Last one leaves around 4pm!
