    The AOR Pro Tube Lead is an accidental doom amp. When first produced in the 80s they were pushed as hair metal amps. The problem was that the massive bass boost made the amp sound muddy. So a lot of players in the L.A. scene where I was duking it out would get their AORs modded to cut the bass boost and get more clarity. Modded AORs sounded insane, about as good as a Soldano.

    • @bayougtr
      @bayougtr ปีที่แล้ว

      I always feel they touch on a Marshall’ish/Soldano’ish tone. Not in this demo obviously. It does show the great clarity with the AOR dimed. Not channel switching, more of a preamp stacking switching amp.

      All doom amps are accidental Doom amps. Nobody specifically designed Sunn, Matamp, Laney, ECT with doom in mind they just happened to be cheap and LOUD back in the 90s.

      @@laynefuller Doom was all about dark, heavy, sludgy, not pop-metal high treble and presence clarity.

    This is easily one of if not the best video on TH-cam covering these amps. I just found an AOR 50 combo that I snagged to balance against my Super Crush and this video has basically been my user manual. Thanks for doing such awesome work and helping the tone chasers out there.

      Hi ! Could you tell me please the weight of the 50 combo ? It looks like a monster. I've seen one not too far, but I was hesitating between the supercrush !

    • @AJ-wh1tw
      @AJ-wh1tw หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ it is an absolute back breaker. In the AOR 50 weighs about 10 pounds more than the Super Crush combo if you’re comparing one for one. In the time since this first post I sold the AOR and got a Frost Giant Architect of Realty preamp to run into the Super Crush for the Laney sound without the weight and repair concerns (the Laney needed to be in the shop A LOT). If you see one near you in good condition, I still say grab it. It’s an awesome amp, you just have to know it comes with extra concerns and be prepared for them.

    I had the combo in the mid 1990's. It was my first tube amp and I ordered it from Daddy's Junky Music. They used to have a monthly newspaper mailer that had every used piece of gear that a broke highschool kid could lust after. I miss that amp. I bet my parents sold it at a garage sale for $20.

    Hi Jason. I loved watching your old videos, when you just sat down and talked about something you have knowledge about and you love. After the Fet120 demo or so, I kind of forgot about the channel. I recently started watching your videos again. I have to say, your channel has come a long way! The videos are short and crisp, well structured and very informative, with a scientific approach. I think you are currently among the best pedal channels out there. And by the way, when manufacturers show that they have a clue about what they are talking about, are not only interested in their own products, but are simply a pedal lover like all of us, that's the best advertising you can do.I'm afraid this is a very long comment, but I want to express my respect and appreciation for the time and effort you put in here. I look forward to new quality conntent!

    I had the aor 50 back in the 80s...it was my first "real" amp. It broke in the early 90s and was told it couldnt be fixed, so i sold it with the cabinet for 200$. I found an aor 100 yesterday for 300$ not working so i bought it. The impedance selector switch was dirty is all. It is an absolute beast... I think it may sound better than my 50 did! Doom for days!

    I've had a few Laney AOR Pro-Tube Lead 50s over the decades - first one in the early 90s. It was the original "Marshall killer" for metal players and the pull boosts were pretty much always on. Great amps - they were fairly reliable and great-sounding for the price, when you think about comparing it to other 80s amps (JCM 800, Mesa, Seymour Duncan Convertible, etc). This and the Dennis Kager Sundown are still hidden gems from that era.

    One of my biggest regrets is selling my Laney AOR 100. It was so incredibly loud it rattled the earth. Could never get a grasp on the microphonics issue though, always had a radio signal coming through even after taking it to get serviced. That along with the fact that it basically needs to be cranked to get good tones led to me selling it for a Fender PA-100 and 2x15 bassman cab. Love my amp now but there's nothing quite like that cranked tube driven rumble.

  • @TedintheShed

    The new forms of metal has not garnered my interest, and I am a child of thrash so with no more new metal to explore I decided to go backwards and delve into doom as Sabbath was my very first influence. Exploring bands like old CoC, Sleep, St. Vitus, Candlemass, etc. This video is why I bought an AOR (modded by Blackhawk amps) as my KSR didn;t really work. Thanks for the videos, they're really helpful.

    first off, i love spectrum analysis. SEEING really helps me understand whats going on. But I'm curious, what would be the drawbacks of the amp having a flat EQ? Is there a reason you wouldnt want that?

    • @lowqualityguitarvideos
      @lowqualityguitarvideos 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Historically guitar amps tend to sound best if they have a bit of a defined eq curve, whether slightly mid scooped for cleans like Fender or slightly mid boosted like... almost every other amp. That said, a flat eq curve would be workable but it may be uninspiring and a bit undefined sounding. Lots of guitar pedals are designed with other amp EQ curves in mind too, so they might not be an immediate match made in heaven. Might require an EQ pedal elsewhere in the signal path. Worth looking into though for sure. A sort of 'intermediate' step in that journey is using a speaker with a flat eq curve.

    What was that song you played with the woodrite warlord in the mix? Or were you just jamming? Either way I've listened to that part over and over 😂

    any suggestions for a doom amp for home use at a small apartment (low volume)? the AOR 30 looks sick, but I feel like it's prob just too loud. I have a girlfriend and a 3-year-old lol.
    I really appreciate your videos man, thank you, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you suggest! I currently have an Orange Crush 35RT with a Celestion G10 Vintage but feel like it's time to upgrade.

      @@FuzzlordEffects oh ok. I have the 100 watt version and since they look the same. I though you put 2 tubes out for some reason.

      Awesome, might sound a little bit different as it uses two 6V6 tubes.

      They are so expensive now. Mine was picked up way back when it was considered a crappy amp and was at a pawn shop. $200 with the cab included

    I know this sounds wild, but if you crank a matamp gt120, it sounds just like that.
