All these bike videos make everything look so easy that it makes me feel like I can go right out and imitate. Then spring comes and I realize I haven't magically gotten better over winter.
Thanks! I have been watching a bunch of your stuff lately, keep it up! I was supposed to be swinging by Sedona next month, but pretty sure April is now cancelled...👎
Agreed. Mind blown every time he posts his hardtail antics. Up the Rock Hard/Rock Soft drop in and the near vertical wall at Fitzgerald....?!!?!! Seriously?! And I thought Phil Metz line choices were nuts.
Probably the most talented all around trials rider out there! Doesn’t matter if it has an engine or pedals. This video was next level! Always a great attitude as well. Thanks for your videos!
Thank you! I appreciate that. I love doing both and they definitely compliment each other well and little things transfer over to the other to make it even more fun.
Strict comp trials is definitely more niche or a bit "gimmicky" as you say but the skills transition to other bikes and to the trail very well. For me it makes so many trails so much more fun because it opens your eyes to more options than the main line.👍
@@PatSmage Yeah for real... That climb 'up' the launch ramp at the top of Coler was stoopid good. I didn't even think that possible...for anyone lol. Good stuff man. Good stuff.
Jeff Edmisten that was a tricky one! Choosing the right gear is tough for stuff like that since you lose so much speed going up steep/short climbs but need fast gear to get enough speed and slow gear to pedal it out if needed. Fun challenge though!
Haha yep exactly, well and some jumps here and there. They are great all around bikes, and the trails close to Bentonville are mostly pretty smooth so the fatbike works great. Awesome place that Arkansas!
That one was hard! Finding the right gear to have enough speed but to still be able to pedal out at the top was tricky, and the loose turn before it didn't help. Worth it when it works though!
That is so cool. All I own is fat bikes. Very inspiring. Can’t do any of that stuff, looks like parkour on a bicycle! This past weekend my fat bike wanted me to do a front flip. Doctor said my ribs should be fine in a couple weeks 👍. You and your wife Keep making awesome videos. 😃
Dude, I need to find that rock garden from the beginning. That'd be a good spot to improve my trials skill in a hurry. The Back 40 trails are my jam right now, I'm fat and out of shape and this trail is definitely working on that, haha. Love your videos, Pat!
That spot is on the back 40 actually! Pinion creek falls. Awesome trials spot, although pretty tough if you don’t have solid trials moves down already. 👍
Oh nice! I know about where that's at and that's fair enough, haha. I've got rear hops, up to back, and basic/intermediate skills down okay, at least on shorter stuff. I'm having to polish the rust off after only riding dirt bikes the last 10 years or more. My fitness is what really seems to hold me up these days. Thanks for the reply, too!
That is what I love from this channel : "trail trial" on your Fatback. This is the only place I can learn what I want to learn : "trail trial" on a Fatbike !!. Question : do you know how much does your bike weight ? Mine is about 33 pounds. I am in the process of lightening it up, but I am not quite sure what should the target weight be. Thanks again Pat, and be careful with all that’s happening right now.
@@HeadwatersKayak Thx for this nformation. But i really want to know it. I know the different pressures from my 2 bikes for snow, trails in wood, street. But trial on rocks? How high u have to go?
I’m not sure, probably around 10psi. I usually just go by feel for what I am after that day. Enough to keep from folding in the corners or bottoming out on rocks, but not so much that it’s a bouncy ball. Can be tough to find the sweet spot as it is ever changing and different for every rider and terrain. Just play around with it and see what feels best for you! 👍
@@PatSmage I guess you make most of the landings smooth regardless... my ankles did hurt from the hammer drop and the chunk at Leatherwood... did you go to Eureka Springs?
I really like the trials helmet for MTB. Not as light as a MTB half shell but more protective and ventilated well enough to not be super hot. The little bit of extra weight is worth it to me.
Hands-down the most cinematic, action-packed and entertaining video you have published Pat. 👍 The production was Aces. The camerawork was top-notch. It would be great if you put out a mix of your traditional style instructional videos while narrating them and also these type of videos as well. Potentially a great combination of tutorial and entertainment. ( by the way the shot of you clearing the gap from rock to rock while Hannah rode right underneath you was phenomenal ) 😎🤘
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I would like to keep mixing it up with different styles of videos, and that is my plan in the coming months. But my plans have also been changing waaaay to much lately so we will see what happens!
Big Su. They have held up well and are noticeably lighter than what I was running. I did put a small ding in one when I had too low of pressure and bottomed out on a rock. But still holds tubeless and is not noticeable while riding so no big deal, it would have happened to any aluminum rim.
Do your mtb trials skills cross over to moto trials? Just getting back into to riding a Beta evo in my late 40's and a mtb would be so much easier to practice on.
Yes, big time! Some techniques are almost the same, others are close enough and can be adapted pretty quickly. Great for cardio, strength and balance also.
Shit I have a lot of catching up to do on my fat bike. I just ordered some Nextie carbon wheels with DT Swiss hubs for my Bafang Ultra powered full suspension E bike. @75 lbs I needed to get a gym membership just to be able to ride this thing.😜
I’ve been riding a MTB for nearly 30 years, what I just saw isn’t even the same sport that I do! UNBELIEVABLE!
Haha it's all the same to me, some people just have a slightly different take on it.👍
All these bike videos make everything look so easy that it makes me feel like I can go right out and imitate. Then spring comes and I realize I haven't magically gotten better over winter.
When it goes right, it looks easy, but it is rarely ever actually easy!
Same here.
You're an animal Pat. Hands down one of my favorite riders to watch.

Agreed. Mind blown every time he posts his hardtail antics. Up the Rock Hard/Rock Soft drop in and the near vertical wall at Fitzgerald....?!!?!! Seriously?! And I thought Phil Metz line choices were nuts.
Right mix of trials and flow
That’s always the goal for me!👍
This is hands down the hardest shredding I've ever seen on a fatbike. Rad video
Thanks! The Skookum is a great all around bike and I think this video shows it, so much fun.
Indeed. Amazing
Holy crap Pat! So much 🤯 in three minutes. I need this whole thing in slow mo.
Haha who needs b roll anyway? Don’t blink or you’ll miss something was the goal I guess🤷
I know!!! we need raw footage no edits, the whole 3 hours we do not care LOL
Absolutely incredible! So much awesomeness in such a short amount of time!
Thanks that was the goal!

I always thought trials was a bit gimmicky but what I learned from watching Pat is that it can be a sweet addition to trail flow!
Thank you! I appreciate that. I love doing both and they definitely compliment each other well and little things transfer over to the other to make it even more fun.

Hey Pat Smage! Thanks for entertaining us all when we really need it! You and Hanna stay safe! Ride ride ride!
Wow...killer bike maneuvering skills on full display for all to behold!
Dude, Pat you're hands down. You are on of the sickest riders ever. Damn
Thanks I appreciate that! I just try to have fun and challenge myself a bit.
Dude, that reverse Pumptrack riding was sick!🤘🏼
Yeah, who needs DJ bike really...
He do not need to pedal backward?
I can't believe how you make all this look so easy.
Truly amazing skills and very good editing.
Thank you! It can look easy when it works, but it definitely isn't easy for me!
Bentonville thought they were cool. Then Pat road everything backwards on a hardtail.
Haha Bentonville is great but it could use some more technical climbs, so I tried to make a couple out of downs.

Simple looking but not so simple to do!

Hundreds of miles of trails here in Bentonville and still cutting in more. It's a bike riders dream
Yep. Around 900mi of trail built in Arkansas to date and increasing at a rate of 1-2miles a week currently.
