Another option is to be my neighbor. I grew up practicing trumpet, drums, piano, saxophone, french horn, electric bass and more. My neighbors loved it. And I will support anyone keeping live music alive.
All tremendous tips I use at least 3 of them. Hands down nothing beats practicing in the car, I do it daily. Another place is if you live close to the ocean you can practice blowing into the waves from the shore line, in fact one well know TH-cam teacher recommends it believing it increases endurance/ lung conditioning. Great tips, Jeff.
Yes! I am the king of practicing in weird places. The car is great for harmonica and clarinet. Not so much for tenor sax. I found an unused vacant warehouse/barn that was acoustically awesome and I used it for a couple years what a great retreat I would go shed for hours. Then they had the nerve to rent the building to some lumber people. I have a bridge I play under now but I have to wait for cold/rainy days because its a canoe launch and people show up on warm days. But its great playing under the bridge next to the river. I have a history of asking local churches if I can use their sanctuaries. You have to sort of make friends with the church and prove yourself a trustworthy person but churches are the best because they usually have a nice piano and, as an exercise I will read out of the hymn books and transpose hymns into all keys. I had a gym membership at this gym that had a big dance studio with tall ceilings and mirrors. THAT place had some acoustics! They were ok with me practicing in there. My local music store lets me use the teaching studios if I want to shed. My living situation lets me practice at home as much as I want but I still like the focus of getting out of the house with the horn. Oh and the storage unit. My unit was mostly full but it was indoors in a hallway and nobody was ever there I could go a play in that hallway and that had a nice sound. Practice mutes for saxophones are crazy and expensive they have to cover the entire horn.
practicing outside will blow out your chops since you're training yourself to play louder than normal. If you must practice outside, do lots of low pianissimo playing to keep the embouchure focused.
Thank you! I just found out I have an audition in 10 days, and I haven't even played in about a year, because of constant stress around practicing. Van studio on the way!!!
Hi again Jeff, I’m another fan of using the car. Most lunch times I can get some chops time in, I use my 1961 Boosey and Hawks Imperial cornet which is a great fit in the car. I’ve also got one of the little Bose Sound bars, that with the iRealPro and your 20 steps book make the car nearly a studio. Like you I tend to be wary of the Silent Mute system it does change the resistance especially as I go higher. Great channel.
great video, i live in an apartment complex and would like to buy a trumpet if i knew the neighbors wouldnt hear me while using a practice mute, amazingly yours seemed pretty quiet in the video
JxT1957 Thanks! Yes, this mute is surprisingly soft, durable, and relatively inexpensive. Yamaha makes a good one as well called the “Silent Brass” but it is kind of pricey.
@@JeffLewisTrumpet a little update.. i bought a cornet and found that i can practice in my car (without a mute) with the windows up right in front of my apartment and not disturb neighbors. no need to travel to the grocery store parking lot.
Have you tried using the electronic mutes. They get good reviews and are supposed to sound pretty close to an actual horn in your headphones. Another idea is seeing if you can get some time at a local church. They acoustics are usually pretty good when they are empty.
I have tried the yamaha silent brass which works really well and sounds awesome in the headphones. After a while I just started using the mute part without the electronic pack. It is kind of expensive unfortunately. I have the original old model but was thinking about doing an "unboxing" of the new model. Great tip on the church as a practice option! Thanks!
I’m purchasing a French horn soon and I’m desperate to find a place to practice as loud as I want with no anxiety of disturbing my neighbors. I live in an apartment. I’m going to first contact my local university to ask if I can use their practice rooms. 🤞
Good point! I've lived in California my whole life so the weather is pretty mild. I definitely would practice at night in the car so it wouldn't get too hot.
Depending on the country you live in and legislation, you might be able to bill it as a business deductable - Money spent to ensure your business operation runs. The business here would be money made by plaing your instrument.
@@JeffLewisTrumpet im a beginner. my teacher doesnt allow me to buy a practice mute. he says, it can have a bad affect on my playing in the long run. so, maybe finding a big empty place outside can be a good alternative. but for now im playing into my wardrobe with full of clothes :)
I used to do the same thing. I played into all of my clothes because I had a small walk in closet. Also, parking garages can make a great place to practice just because of the reverb! I remember when I lived in an apartment, I used to only practice in my practice mute and I thought it sounded great. Then, I would get to the gig, and it sounded and felt horrible.

Always great to have cool neighbors when you are a musician!

Thanks man! Great tips! I never thought about the car. I’m going to start learning trumpet.

It's also not recommended to play trombone in a car
I have spent many hours practicing in my car, and I agree the back seat works best. I have also practiced many times at parks, or at beaches.
Yup, been there!
Absolutely great advice, thanks! I can add only that either in a car/park or beach you always have to protect yourself during doing it!
These are golden tips, thank you
Glad you like them! Thanks.
Practicing in the car... what a brilliant idea... which makes me think perhaps practicing at a lookout would be good too...
Glad you like it!

Good advice! I used to hate doing gigs outside because I could never hear myself so I'd end up blowing my chops out.
What does that mean? Wearing out your playing stamina?

I got 4 more day left and I have a playing test

Like they say, If there is a will, there is a way! Haha! Great to hear.

Thank you for this, and thank god for my Camry. Getting a trumpet next week - any resources you would recommend for learning?
You’re welcome! I have the first five lessons if you’re a beginner on TH-cam. This may be a good place to start if you’re a beginner.
Trombone looking at car tip be like 😅
lmaoo same here

I've been thinking about getting a mute. I haven't played much since school.
Go for it!
But what if it's really hot or cold outside? Practicing could get expensive if your car is running for that whole time.
Good point! I've lived in California my whole life so the weather is pretty mild. I definitely would practice at night in the car so it wouldn't get too hot.
Car, university practice rooms, outside (parks/ freeways/ airports), practice *mutes*, storage units
Yes!
Writing off mileage your practicing in your car? 🤔 Can someone help me understand this
Check with your tax accountant as not everyone can deduct miles.

ok time to get my driver's license 😁😁
Haha!
car is a good idea. unfortunately im a motorcycle person..
Ah, that makes the car idea moot. Hopefully another suggestion works?

I cannot play trombone in my car
Sit in the back seat and fold the passenger chair down in front of you. See if that gives you enough room.
