Yes, Bondi Beach can get crowded because it's in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. If you want uncrowded, far larger beaches you need to visit The Northern Beaches of Sydney, or travel out of Sydney to either the South or North Coast. It's well worth it, believe me.

As a Sydney-sider myself, I can say it’s worth researching into areas off the beaten track and experiencing the natural beauty of Australia and have the chance of seeing our lovely native animals in the wild, where they belong.

Don't visit Hyde Park at night but do during the day. Drink XXXX or Tooheys beer. Don't feed the Ibis or gulls- they will still hang around anyway. The walk across the bridge to the other side is free and open to the public, but the bridge climb up to the top is not, and will cost. Taronga zoo is also a great zoo with a view of the harbour/city to boot but it's not cheap. Definitely agree going on a ferry- even for a short trip- is worth it. There are so many beaches in Australia but if you're only in Sydney and restricted with time, Bondi is the place to go as it's so close to the city. Some free things to do or see in the city are: The Queen Victoria Building, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Paddy's Markets, The Rocks, Museum of Contemporary Art, St Mary's Cathedral, and yes the botanical gardens are lovely and they also have a free guided walking tour. The city/CBD/"downtown" is very multicultural, as is the rest of Sydney. If you want to experience the Crocodile Dundee stereotype holiday, I'd suggest visiting a rural area, keeping in mind that Australia is a large country and driving to places may not be a quick trip, depending on where you go. If you love beaches and warm weather, fly to Queensland and stay for a while. A nice day trip from Sydney is the Blue Mountains (can take the train), the Royal National Park, Hunter Valley wine region, Canberra (full day or stay there), Kiama (visit the blowhole)...there is so much to see. If you're traveling from the other side of the world, make the most of it. And don't use that much vegemite when you try it haha. Get some buttered toast with a pea-sized amount. It's an acquired taste. Can you tell I love Sydney?

A nice piece, overall, I thought. I Like the quirky and self deprecating bits particularly . A gentle American. Nice work. Yeah, of course the attractions list is a bit of the usual, "but there's plenty more to see here folks...!". Even so, as someone who came here 59 years ago, I've also lived in lots of the standard Sydney described. But much much more... And I am just love this place and wouldn't live anywhere else for quids.

Yes people need to get out of the city and into the countryside where real Australians are… and see the snowy mountains, the farm lands, gorges and waterfalls and river lands…. Only 20% of Australia is officially classified as a desert. The rest is a beautiful mix of agriculture and national parks. Not to be missed for the world

Mate as a born n breed Aussie...
u MISSING KEY POINTS: train ride up the mountains (express Mountian Central all the way to see the 3 sisters or explore the Royal National Parks ), travel around (hired car) Mount panorama the home of the Bathurst 1000 (happens every October), tour the local museums, head up Gold Coast Queensland (theme parks central), watch a footy game or two (AFL or NRL...our try blue home grown sports), take in our history (both the good and bad...educate yourself and take home new knowledge), cross the harbour bridge ground level (IN WHICH IS FREE!!), get in touch at your local (pub...there is plenty around, give VB or four X a swig)...try all of our food (as since we’re a mixed races country there is NO ONE TRADITIONAL dish: tim-tams, Lamingtons, ANZAC biscuits, etc....
Visit during a national holiday: ANZAC DAY (honouring our fallen war hero’s kind of like Remembrance Day but for Aussies and Kiwis (New Zealands), Christmas (it’s gonna be a hot one), Australia Day (aka invasion day, where our white ancestors invaded the natives without asking or cooperation with them)
There is soo much to do, ask around you never know who you might call a mate by the the time you rack off (go home)

Bondi is a great beach, but there are many others there.
Hop a train to Circular Quay and take the 35min ferry ride down the harbour and almost into the Pacific to Manly. You hop of an the Manly harbour beach (great for little ones) then take a short walk down a very touristy corso to the Pacific ocean beaches, North and South Steyne. I used to like to have calamari cooked fresh from the fish shop and stroll over the the bottle shop in the pub to pic up a nice Liebfraumilch and some plastic glasses, go pick up my calamari and chips and relax in the park before the beach quaffing great seafood and fine wine. (All perfectly legal as long as you are not drunk and disorderly and dispose of the bottle appropriately).
Beware though - Sydney is expensive!

I love both Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. Coogee Beach is not too bad either as it looks a lot like Bondi and is quieter. Bondi Beach has the vibe, but so does Manly. The shopping in and around the Manly Corso is great ... much better than the area around Bondi. But, Bondi Junction is just two miles away and there is a lot of great eating and shopping there. They have a wonderful mall at Bondi Junction.
