2018 Mercedes Benz S560 Review and Comparison

  • The S-Class has long been the benchmark for full-size luxury sedans and that continues for 2018. The Mercedes might be more expensive than the competition but that super-sized price tag buys you more luxuries than you'll find in the competition as well. Often emulated, there's just nothing quite like an S-Class in America.

I’ve always preferred amber signals as well. I think they’re much easier to spot in the periphery during the day and night. Europe made them required for a reason.

Definitely prefer amber turn signals. In my opinion, the red turn signals can easily be confused with brake lights, particularly when the brake lights and turn signals are one-in-the-same (which may not be the case for the redesigned S-class).

@@trinisuprazee I don't have any complaints about my car. I understood that maintenance would be higher than other cars, but the flip side is that they are built so well that you don't have to worry about breakdowns, especially if you are taking care of them. I also have a 2015 E-Class and a GLK350 so I am good with them.

Hi Alex best vehicle reviewer in my humble opinion. I especially enjoy your Mercedes S class reviews. I have 2007 in like new condition with low miles and have driven a newer one and I like my old 2007 better from the interior to exterior and I enjoy the ride just as much. It also has more than enough tech for me and I love the headlight washers and night vision mine also has power rear seats and heated and cooled rear seats and the rear passengers can adjust their climate individually. I am a poor guy but feel like a king when I drive my S class makes my troubles fade away and puts a smile on my face. Would I like a newer on not really too expensive for me plus the old one I have feels just a little more special and solid.

Great review. I'm glad you compared the BMW M760Li to the Mercedes S65 AMG. Many often compare it to the S63 and that's just wrong. BMW's answer to the S63 sedan is the Alpina B7.
The best between the Maybach S560/650, the Bentley Flying Spur and the Rolls Royce Ghost is a matter of opinion. I agree with you are that the Bentley Flying Spur is statelier than the Maybach S560/650. Sure, the Maybach has some features that the Flying Spur doesn't (like Auto-parking). However, from a styling and design perspective, the Flying Spur wins the Maybach hands down.

I’d easily take the S63 AMG. I think it’s the best model of the entire s class lineup. It’s stupid fast for its weight and comparable in performance to a model 3 performance. Plus the s63 is comfortable and it has the air suspension and that great sounding exhaust.

I think with the SUV craze in America, and the general space advantages that class brings, I think you'll see vehicles in this class lose market share to luxury SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator, Range Rover Extended wheelbase, the Rolls Royce Cullinan, etc. That trunk was really tiny after you put the fridge in there. That's not an issue in a big ass SUV. I'd love for Mercedes to full update the GLS and give it a lot of the interior comfort and features you see in this car.

Great Review! I simply love the W222 and especially the facelift with the AMG Exterieur. Benchmark within its class.
One thing i have to correct: the base engine is not a V6, its an R6 (inline 6cylinder). Its the first mass produced beltless engine which is achieved by using an integrated startergenerator. This startergenerator also produces up to 22PS and 250Nm of what Mercedes calls EQ Boost (electric boost). Amazing engine i was just able to test myself in the CLS450. Definitly something you should have a look at!
    Keep up the good work!

Hi, Alex that bag would have fit with the tiniest of a push lol, that was not very fair lol. Nice try though I have fit that same size bag in mine with a fridge so I can say for a fact that it will fit. The fridge in fairness can be removed. Love the 2018 and loved my 07 when I had it also although it did not have massage seats even though it had all the other features that were a package that should have come with them so kind of of strange. The Previous owner must have hand-picked options separately and not the whole package?

I always thought I might be the only wierd person who preferred amber turn signals. Especially when you have a full LED tail light set up. However, my number one pet peeve; I hate when the brake light becomes the turn signal. This means that between the two tail lamps only, you are consistently dropped down to 1 tail lamp, every time you slow down for a turn. Not including the third brake light. 1 main thing I love on My Genesis G80 Sport is full LED tail lights with a seperate "strip like" amber turn signals. Now similar to the tail lights, is it so difficult to make seperate front led turn signals from the led running light. Very few cars have that, but some do. I constantly see cars with led head light modules, and when they put the turn signal on, the remaining led running light appears as if the car has 1 eye open! Anyone agree?

The Genisis is not playing the same Game as the other cars listed (there is just no prestige in the name(yet)).
I think the S-class and the BMW is just a matter of taste- they are both great cars. The Lexus is something special and very good. Jaguar is just not reliable enough.
    My pick:
    Basemodel-> Lexus LS
Topend-> Merc when looking for ultimate comfort and style in below Rolls Royce level
BMW when looking for something big, cosy and fun.

I’d prefer the s63 AMG over the other trims of the s class. It’s 100K cheaper than the s65, and yet, it’s stupidly fast. 0-60 in the s63 is 3.5 seconds vs 4.2 in the s65. The acceleration time is comparable to the m5, give or take 0.3-0.4 seconds.

I own a 2016 E-Class. At the time, the E-Class was a newer model than the 2016 S-Class, and had more technology. Need to be careful when shopping between the S and the E because they leapfrog each other in terms of new model/refresh. Top of the line in M-B world doesn't guarantee the best stuff.

xNuckin_Futs. Yeah, I sound like a bad person because I own a Merc, but I was pointing out that S and E leapfrog each other and you don't necessarily get the best tech in either depending on the roll-out date of that model.

I have gone back and forth between the 7 series and S class for 20 years. I always pick the 7 because I just don't see the S as $10K plus better than the 7. When Lexus puts a V8 in the LS, I will give them a shot. I like Lexus's reliability. Just rolled out of an 2013 XJ. Absolutely beautiful car that was great to drive (V8 supercharged) got stopped all the time concerning it's looks.. Had computer reliability problems at the end. Great review.

S-Class does not offer full rear seat pass through for extended cargo space! It suppose to be a limousine class sedan!

Alex your rating has the new Lexus LS500 ride at A+, and the Mercedes only has an A. So ur saying the Lexus has a better ride? U also gave the Lexus an A in handling and this Mercedes only has a B. Interesting.

3:52 It hurts to watch those red turn signals. They should be amber especially if it is a 'design choice' as you mentioned. I thought it was also product of those silly lighting regulations for american cars.

Matias Petrali Everyone else in the world gets amber turn signals. See the Euro version. Not sure why Mercedes US decided on red. But it is not usually red.

I know! thats why I hate it, amber turn signals look a lot sleeker on the lower part of the taillight, middle should be brake only. The worst in the business is Audi though, european engineers put a lot of thought into the design of the taillights with sequential turn siglas, and Audi US just goes ahead and makes the WHOLE taillight flash red.. smh.

In my experience, every vehicle with red turn signals originated from the US. At the same time, I've also seen US vehicles with the proper colour. I don't understand why they would use red though.

The only Mercedez I've driven was a rented S-450 in Germany (for about a week). Quite pleasant experience. But I still love my Audi A7 the most. :-)
