- A staggering amount. of money goest into creating, designing, building racing cars. And another incredible amount of cash is lost on those machines that, after a full development cycle, never actually made it to the track. But it happens. a lot more than you think.
There have been plenty of sportscars, F1 cars, rally cars and more that were created with the purpose of conquering the world, but ended up just sitting gathering dust, and these are eight of our favourites.

Wasn't Group S were the cars would have gone up to 800 HP but they canceled it due to the fatalities?
Never heard of a Group S with just 300 HP. That's what Group A is..

I think it's also worth mentioning the Lancia ECV 2 as it was the pinnacle of Lancia engineering, same chassis and engine but better aerodynamics and better weight distribution than the original ECV

A note on group S. Prior to the fatalities that ended Group B, the Group S regulations would have opened the engines up significantly with a number of unraced prototypes running in the 800hp range. The regulations mentioned in the video were as a last ditch effort to try and save Group S that also failed which is why there are so many Group S prototypes out there from different manufacturers
800hp+ rally cars that long ago sounds like a comically terrible idea and if not for the numerous bystander fatalities that would have doubtlessly caused I would have loved to see how that worked out.
Are there any rally video games or something that feature rally cars so outrageously overtuned?
@@marisechristmas9897 if you want to play with group S rally cars, to my knowledge, take a steer into Gravel (has the toyota, Opel and Lancia ECV1). I believe this is the only game that features these without mods
I think another honourable mention would be the 2021 BMW M4 DTM after the Class One Regulations. It was developed, but after DTM went to become a GT3 Championship it never got to be raced. At least it found its way into Simracing.
According to Adrian Newry, the MP4-19 was just the MP4-18 with the 8 changed to a 9, and the reason the car didn't work till the mid 2004 season "B" spec was because McLaren didn't listen to him about a package redesign that should have been done to the 18 in late 2003 but the rest of the aero team said it could work without the time and cost of a redesign. I think Newey was right and should have been listed too as he'd be off to Red Bull Racing in part due to not being respected correctly.
For anyone that would like to see the Toyota TF110 up close, it's displayed with some other rarities (The first Jordan-Ford F1 car Schumacher raced on, a Dakar Volkswagen Touareg, a 919 Hybrid, the uber-rare Audi R8R LMP Proto, etc) at Automuseum PROTOYP in Hamburg, Germany! :)
Knowing Lancia they would probably just stop somewhere in the Monte Carlo mountains and quickly turn that engine up to full 600bhp

yeah you really cant say something sketchy wasnt gonna be afoot when they built it to have double the competing horsepower requirement.
I kinda wished Toyota had the chance to race the 22D, it would have been cool to see later versions of the MR2/MRS in rally spec, even just for RWD specific rallies.
Almost criminal levels of negligence leaving out the very beautiful Jaguar XJ13.
The amount of group b/group S cars that was never used could fill this list over 4 times over.
I wish the 288 GTO Evo raced
Sad to not see the koenigsegg CCGT on this list as it wouldve been an absolutely dominant car had it been able to race
That's still the best looking Koenigsegg even to this day. I think it could have done well if I had a chance to enter competition.
The lot of Group S and Group B prototypes that never raced is fascinating and intriguing. The 190e was originally conceived as a Group B car, there was an Alfa, the Porsche 959, a collaboration between Daihatsu and DeTomaso, all for Group B. Mazda also had a Group S prototype in the works!
Also Peugeot 905 evo2, successor of the top group c machine.
It did only one race, Magny Cours 500 SWC 1992

The Group S regs were never fully signed off on which is why the manufactures were building cars with power alot higher than 300bhp.
The prospect of VW competing in the WRC for 2017 was so exciting for me. I was so gutted when they announced they were pulling the plug. Still, all the test footage of the car is awesome to see.
How about the Williams FW15C? The version with a CVT transmission that was banned before they ever raced it.
I wish I could drive those cars on SIm-racing games. The idea of driving a cars that been canceled or forgotten by time is really amusing.

Alfa Romeo simply amazing beautiful!
Also, I know the Deltawing had a bit of a peculiar shape, but to a more innocent eye, I thought they resembled retro-futurisitc/airstreamer concepts of the 50s and 60s. Would have been nice to see a limited series testing alternative fuels, with a "car of the future, today" styled theme
i’m still glad that Dallara was chosen，as the Deltawing is possible the uglyest Indycar i’ve ever seen（admittedly，i say that as someone who loved the IR-05s，but still。nothing will ever eclipse the Dallara IR-05 interms being the most beautiful open wheel racing cars ever made，and that is a fact。），and it would’ve have ruined the sport。
Koenigsegg CCGT was for me the most iconic race car that never raced
My all-time dream car is a road-going Lancia Delta S4 Stradale. Surprisingly few videos about them. A road-legal ECV would be truly wild!

@@AtheistOrphan It’s a rally for sure. Driven by Paolo Alessandrini in ‘87 and maybe in ‘88 also. IMO, the best looking was the army-green prototipo filmed in La Mandria test track!😍😍

It's not a definitive list, we'll do more.
I made a similar video years ago (but focused on rally), it's always intetesting to see what we almost see on tracks

The Alfa romeo died so the 155 v6 ti can live i totally agree that car tore the track up
I actually went to the Chicago motor show the year the Deltawing was revealed. At the time I couldn't fathom how the car worked, but as we found out it did work in sports car racing.
If the Porsche LMP2000 raced, it would’ve denied Audi’s racing success outright. The Porsche RS Spyder was an LMP2 car and was easily capable of keeping up with the Audi’s and were more reliable

you forgot the Nissan P35 GTP car that was built, tested but never raced as Nissan pulled out of GTP
My top 3 (in no particular order) Peugeot 905 evo2, Ferrari F50 gt1, Audi R18(2017)
Honorable mention: TVR Cerbera Speed 12
The Evo2 looked like it was from another planet. As Peugeot were at the top of their game in the SWC in 1992, I have no doubt the Evo2 would have been stunningly quick. Just a shame it never had the chance to show its potential.
I think the Peugeot 905 Evo 2 should also be here
If I remember correctly, the problem with the MP4-18 was that it was too compact and developed overheating (and other?) problems. We now all know what could have been, because they did the compact - size zero - design again in the Mclaren/Honda/Alonso era, where Honda had to dial down the power to GP2 level just to survive a grand prix distance.
Cooling for a V6 turbo hybrid is quite different tho, plus Adrian Knew what he was doing, he realized the mistake but McLaren didn't want to fix it, just to make another car.
In my opinion, the ECV is the best Lancia ever.
Group-S had plenty cool prototypes all were mostly mid-engines : Audi RS002, ECV1 & ECV2, Toyota MR222D, Peugeot 405 T16-Quasar, Ford RS-200 S, MG Metro 6R-V6 AWD, Opel Kadet 4X4, Seat Ibiza Bimoto, Mazda RX7S, Mitsubishi Starrion 4WD, Lada Samara EVA-S, BMW M1 Procar, Ferrari 288 GTO S, Porsche 959.. All were crazy.

I would have liked to see more about the Toyota 222D which I also don't think ever got to be raced.
It didn't, just like the 002 Quattro. Or the Ford RS200 Evo 2 and the Peugeot 205 T16 Evo 3 (not sure if these count, since they are just evolutions). Speaking of the Quattro, there was a Group B Quattro prototype with the engine in the middle, but the car hasn't been seen for like 40 years. It's possible it served as a base for the Group S 002 Quattro.

Hey people.....(First Sorry for my English)......but this Page mayby forghet this fact.......the wife ov S4 engineer deteined in own garage the prototype ov S4 ecv2 with new chassys and engine called tri-flux.....same volumetric compressore with turbo charger ov S4 buy with revolutionary sistem ov injection (tri-flux or three-line).........and someone said able ti ho from 800hp (low boost) to 1100hp (higt boost)...... Some italian site talk about this...... saluti dall'Italia

Citroen C4 Hybrid WRC over 10 years ago....
I'm naturally drawn towards the Lancia! Mainly cuz it's a Lancia! But, I must admit, that Alfa was quite a pretty car (then again, it IS an Alfa Romeo, so...)! If noult else, though, I would love to see these in a game somewhere, even Lancia's Group C cars! All we ever get of Lancia is their Rally cars, be nice for a bit of variety, I mean, I know they were dominant and I never turn down a Delta S4, but...
some 1-off racing game called gravel actually has the lancia ecv in it and its unironically the best car in the game.

I think the F50 GT could have done very well between '96 and '98 before GT1 died out.
it’s kind of still baffles me，that as ugly as the Dallara DW12 was（even compared the IR-05），we very nearly got somat worse the form of the Deltawing。
How about the RS200?
VW didn't only do sketchy emission things in the US. Europe has a dozen times more VW cars but in the US they had do pay a waaaaay bigger fine than here.
And now the funny part: The crime they have commited by that (in Germany) would have cost them alot of money but thanks to VW's lobby (duh...) the government suddenly tweaked the law so VW barely had to pay anything. They are making it even sketchier.
To this day, it still bums me out that the 908 Hybrid4 Never raced. It was developed, completed and clearly was in working order as seen in the videos that showed it testing. And yet as the team were in Sebring for the usual testing phase, they get the call that the plug has been pulled.

Rear wing of Polo GTI WRC looks pretty similar to what we've seen in Polo R WRX(and 2.0l engine, around 560-570hp). Maybe they kinda used new WRC parts to create killer WRX Polo out of older chassis?

At the time I also heard that Opel worked on a Kadett rally car with 1000hp. But then the rules changed.
At first glance, that Lancia ECV looked like an old AMC Gremlin. I wondered who made a Gremlin into a racing car.

I guess if any of these could be entered in the timed shootout then they could said to have 'raced', belatedly.
A car that definitely would have changed motorsport forever is the McLaren MP4/8 "Lambo": loved by Senna, not so much by Ferrari and Todt...
