I've been waiting so long for something like this, since the original rode video mic pro. I felt that the pro and pro plus didnt have that little bit of extra treble which makes voices sound good but I think they finally cracked it with this one.
Just the review I was looking for. Already had decided I preferred the NTG over the Deity D3 Pro due to the added features (even though both sound great). Still had not been able to find the differences between these two. I'm not too familiar with audio, however I know that Sennheiser often takes the cake in many areas. I'm dumbfounded how close it and the NTG sound here. The Sennheiser, to my ears, sounds a little bit cleaner and richer still, however for $250... it's just impossible to argue against a new videographer like me going with the NTG. Sounds like it'll be a great first mic as I get more into things, after having borrowed others' mics up to this point. Thanks for helping me finally make the choice!

Does this mic pick up static interference from nearby wifi routers? I had the Rode VideoMic GO and that was a huge issue. I had to return as I couldn't use it because of that :(
One thing I don't see the reviews mention is that the Videomic NTG and the Videomic Pro+ have different pickup patterns, and the Pro+ is much wider so possibly better for using on top of a camera. What are your thoughts on that?
Note - there was a tiny bit of self noise coming from the Rode Videomic NTG.. Rode already released a firmware update patching how it sounds through a GH5 and it sounds even better now. Here's where you can download the latest firmware: rode.com/microphones/videomicntg
I picked up the pro plus but since I have time to return it I ordered this up too and will test. I have seen people use the plus in rain and snow for vlogging. Not sure if it's waterproof or not but seems it is from what I have seen with people using it. Do you think this ntg is ok for the elements after the windshield is released ?
I recorded the intro audio through the headphone jack of the mixpre3 kinda low, and then into the GH5 on purpose, and gained up in post to give a lower quality audio experience leading into the Rode microphone demo so your perception of their mic's quality wouldn't be distorted when compared to thousands of dollars of studio equipment that you would be listening to for the first bit.. I threw in an actual comparison, properly recorded, later in the video.
@@TommyCallaway that is some attention to detail! Good review, man. I got the mic yesterday. Been testing it out with a 85mm lens and the directional audio is something I've never seen! Mine comes out in a week :)
Hey? Which extension cable should I use for my ntg to mount on my boom pole for my canon 90D? I got the rode VC1 10 inch cable but it keeps cutting out and I hear static. Which extension cable should I buy or what can I use to extend the cable?

@@TommyCallaway Didn't Deity revise the D3 Pro to have a better auto off/on that doesn't turn off after 15 min? Wondering how the sound quality in your opinion compares, ready to sell my D3 Pro if the NTG is better.
@@travismlu What I mean is the D3 pro has to be turned on manually when you want to use it, and turned off manually at the end of the day (otherwise it will die overnight, active standby mode still eats battery even when the camera is turned off). The Rode mic, in that regard, has a far superior "auto battery" mode. For sound quality, some people prefer the deity sounds (a bit warmer, with a lower emphasis on the high end, less sibilance), I personally prefer the NTG sounds comparing the two (higher emphasis on sibilance and upper frequencies with less emphasis in the mid range) - it just sounds like it's a lot closer to the Sennheiser sound to me, which is my personal favorite. Also, being able to use the Rode as a native USB mic in a pinch is a dope feature - you can plug it into a laptop on the go for a quick voiceover in post.
Tummas Simonsen which did you end up going for? I ended up ordering the NTG because I want to record on usb on laptop for tutorials but am worried the noise floor on the ntg will be worse than the deity d3 pro...

Hello, Great video! Question: What extension cord did you use to get the Rode Videomic NTG (mic) on the boom stand (closer to you, but still connected the camera?)
Any 3.5mm extension cable should work. Amazon basics: amzn.to/3auXHyU - remember, the longer the cable, the more chances you will have to introduce interference, so don't get like a 25 foot cable.
Hi, great mic and review. I get mine today. I use the ntg on a Sony a7iii. Can you tell me what gain on the mic and the cam i should use? Mic 1 and cam 6? What is the best standard settings? Marco

Well, it’s a mic that can be boomed for NTG level quality, or also used on a camera to vlog or run and gun with, and used as a USB mic. It prevents you from needing to buy multiple mics. I use it as high quality scratch audio / backup audio to my main boomed setup. I don’t know much about the mke600, but Sennheiser makes some fantastic audio equipment.
