    Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

    Fantastic - well done and great tips. I've just planted out a 35' bed of Iceland Poppies and it sounds like I might do OK! In Australia we're in autumn heading for winter. I've put my seedlings into warm soil with about 5-6 weeks to our first frost. They are SO lovely - yours were fantastic (back in 2019 lol!)

    These dainty little plants self seed just fine and pop up randomly year to year in my garden where I don't do anything special to them. Zone 5. Flowering about June. I just have the orange ones. Very tall about 1 foot at most. I don't care about color combos as orange isn't really fitting with the purple pinks of that time but on close examination, their fairy like presentation makes them all so special.
    Love to see more videos. Not too often do people mention when planting time in the fall is best for their seeding or that the seeds need cold treatments.

    I winter sowed islandic poppies and Shirley poppies in Feburary (zone 5). The Shirley poppies sprouted a lot faster than the islandic ones. Didn't have germination problems with either but islandic poppies are really slow to start. Like really really slow haha. The faster you put them in the ground though Really makes a difference.

    I live in zone 3 and there is a variety of Iceland Poppy that I have that came from zone 2. It is finicky though, it wants to flourish where it wants to, not where I want it.

    Where did you order your plugs from? They are beautiful. I was under the impression that all poppies needed cold stratification and had to be direct sowed. Thanks for all the great information.

      Just depends on the type. I always direct sow shirley poppies, but these are definitely more difficult. Plugs are from Farmer Bailey's

    Very helpful video. Do you know where to buy primed seeds ? I don't know what primed means, is it just cold stratification ? Have your grown Oriental poppies before ? They are apparently perennial for my zone zone 6b or lower

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers
      @TONYAwiththeflowers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never tried growing the perennial oriental poppies. There are several ways seed can be primed including cold. Usually seed from nursery suppliers are primed. It almost always will say it in the description.

      I think it might mean kept in the refrigerator. Some seeds have to be cold first to sprout.

      Try the Primed seeds, like at Floret, a commenter said..
      Johnny's Seeds says they germinate in less than 2 wks, but does not say if they are primed.
